‘People suddenly bereaved at risk’ ~ by Susan Tirbult People who suffer sudden bereavement and do not see the body

are at much greater risk of psychological disturbance than those with longer preparation for death, a conference in London on

bereavement after violence was told yesterday.

Dr Colin Murray Parkes, senior lecturer in psychiatry at The London Hospital, presented research, which showed that widows and widowers who had been relatively unprepared for

bereavement still suffered psychologically up to four years later. Another group of widows and widowers who were better prepared

recovered much more quickly.

Of the sample group of people with a short preparation for bereavement interviewed two to four years after the death, 44% said that they would not care if they died the next day.

Of the group with longer preparation, 15% reported the same feelings two to four years after the death.

Of the ill-prepared group, 72% still suffered overall anxiety, compared with 32% of the better prepared.

The preparation of relatives ~ for bereavement was very difficult,

because people did not want to anticipate or hear bad news, Dr Parkes said. But he emphasised the need to try.

I think we should be more scrupulous not only in telling people of risks but also of making sure that they have understood”

He advised generally in favour of people seeing a dead person.

‘A disabled war veteran has established a world record

by out pedaling 32 able-bodied participants in a marathon cycling competition.

N. Peethambaran, a 36-year-old former paratrooper belonging to the Corps of EME,

created a sensation recently when he won the cycling competition from Pune to Kanyakumari.

The circuitous route totaled 20,000 km. covering 21 states. Peethambaran achieved the monumental feat in just

58 days, averaging about 300 km. a day. What was remarkable was that among the 33 participants,

Peethambaran was the only handicapped cyclist and yet he beat the others to clinch the coveted trophy.

The former paratrooper told UNI that the best phase of his feat was from Secunderabad to Bangalore

when following a ‘burst of energy’ he covered 601 km. in Just 32 hours.

He showed numerous certificates and testimonials by army officers, politicians & policemen to prove this.

So arduous was the competition that all other participants dropped out after reaching Secunderabad

from where Peethambaran proceeded alone to register a world record.

In view of his unprecedented achievement, Peetbambaran has been selected to represent the

country in the world cycling meet to be held in Canada. The army paratrooper lost his right leg

in action during the 1971 Indo-Pak war; However, soon after it was amputated,

dependent on the six-fold base, contact; dependent on contact, feeling; dependent on feeling, craving;

dependent on craving, clinging; dependent on clinging,

the process of becoming, (rebirth);

dependent on the process of becoming, ageing, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief

and despair come to pass.

Thus does the whole mass of suffering (Dukkha) begin ~

The Cessation of The Wheel of Existence Through the entire cessation of this ignorance,

Volitional formations cease. Through the cessation of Volitional formations,

Rebirth consciousness ceases. Through the cessation of Rebirth consciousness,

Mentality-materiality ceases. Through the cessation of Mentality-materiality,

the six-fold base ceases. Through the cessation of the Six-fold base, Contact ceases.

Through the cessation of Contact, Feeling ceases. Through the cessation of Feeling, Craving ceases. Through the cessation of Craving, Clinging ceases.

Through the cessation of Clinging, Becoming ceases. Through the cessation of Becoming, Birth ceases.

Through the cessation of Birth, Ageing, sorrow, pain, despair and death cease.

Thus Ceases This Whole Mass Of Suffering

Consciousness cannot exist independently of Matter, Sensations, Perception and Mental Formations.

What we call a ‘being’ or an ‘individual’ or 'I’ is only a combination of these five interdependent Aggregates.

They are all Impermanent, constantly changing Whatever is Impermanent is ‘dukkha' (suffering).

They are in a flux of momentary arising and disappearing. One thing disappears, containing the appearance of the next

in a series of Cause and Effect. There is no Unchanging substance in them

** The Five Aggregates What Buddhist philosophy calls a ‘being; or an 'individual: or 'I'

is only a combination of ever ~ changing physical and mental forces or energies, which may be divided into Five groups or aggregates

(pancakkhandha). The Buddha says these five aggregates of attachment are ‘dukkha' (suffering)

* The first aggregate is of Matter. Here are included the traditional Four Great Elements, namely, Solidity, Fluidity, Heat and Motion;

also their derivatives. Here are included our Five material sense~organs. ie; the faculties of eye, ear, nose, tongue and body, and their

corresponding objects in the external world, ie, visible form, sound, odour, taste and tangible things, and also some thoughts or ideas

or conceptions which are in the sphere of Mind-objects (dharmayatana). Thus the whole realm of matter internal and external,

is included in this aggregate of Matter *

The second is the aggregate of Sensations. Here are included all our sensations, pleasant or unpleasant or neutral, experienced through the contact of physical and mental organs with the external world.

They are of six kinds: the sensations experienced through the contact of the eye with the visible forms, ear with sounds, nose with odour,

tongue with taste, body with tangible objects, and mind (which is the sixth faculty In Buddhist philosophy) with mind-objects

or thoughts or ideas. All our physical and mental sensations are included. *

The third is the aggregate of Perception. Like sensations, perceptions are also of six kinds, in relation to six internal faculties and the

corresponding six external objects. Like sensations they are produced through the contact of our six faculties with the external world.

It is the perceptions that recognise objects whether physical or Mental. 49

The fourth is the aggregate of Mental Formations. In this group are included all volitional activities both good & bad.

What is generally known as 'Karma' comes under this group. Having willed, one acts through the body, speech or mind. Volition

is mental construction, mental activity. Its function is to direct the mind in the sphere of good, bad or neutral activities. It Is also of six kinds,

connected with the six internal faculties & the corresponding six objects both mental & physical in the external world. Sensations & Perceptions

are not Volitional actions. They do not produce Karmic effects. It is only volitional actions ~ such as ‘attention’ ‘will’ ‘confidence’ ‘concentration’ ‘wisdom’ ‘energy’ ‘desire’ ‘repugnance’ or ‘hate’

‘ignorance’ ‘conceit’ ‘idea of self’ etc that can produce karmic effects. There are 52 of these mental activities.

* The fifth is the aggregate of Consciousness.

Consciousness is a reaction or response which has one of six faculties (eye, ear, nose, tongue, body and mind) as its basis, and one of six

corresponding external phenomena (visible form, sound, odour taste, tangible things and mind-objects, ie an Idea or thought) as its object.

For instance, visual consciousness has the eye as its basis and a visible form as object. Mental-consciousness has the mind as its basis

and a mental object ie an Idea or thought (dhamma) as its object. So consciousness is connected with other faculties. As Sensation &

Perception & Volition, Consciousness is also of six kinds in relation to six internal faculties & their six external corresponding objects. Consciousness does not recognise an object. It is only a sort of an

awareness of the presence of an object. When the eye comes In contact with a colour, eg blue, visual consciousness arises which is simply

awareness of the presence of a colour; but it does not recognise it as the colour blue. There is no recognition at this stage. It is 'Perception' that recognises that the colour Is blue.

and that Consciousness (vinnana) should not be taken as ‘Spirit’

in opposition to matter ‘Consciousness’ arises out of conditions.

Assent For A Royal Bill ‘The Royal Family will receive a 4 per cent increase

on annual expenditure in 1984 to prevent a threatened deterioration in the majesty of Britain’s

greatest tourist attraction. The Prime Minister, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr Nigel Lawson and the Keeper of the Privy Purse,

Mr Peter Miles, who are the royal trustees, recommend the increase in a report published yesterday.

If it is approved it will take the cost of the Civil List payments to more than £3 million for the first time. The rise “may just be adequate to maintain existing

Standards through 1984” according to the royal trustees in a 10 year review of cost of the British monarchy

carried out under the provisions of Civil List legislation. But they warn that any lesser increase

“would lead to a significant reduction in the scale or style

of occasions and appearances” It compares with an increase, 4.7% in 1983.

The mark of Mrs Thatcher can be discerned in the good housekeeping seal of approval contained in the report.

There is a reference to the satisfaction of the trustees as at the continuing efforts

that are apparently being made to secure economies in the administration

of the Royal Household. But the Civil List figure does not cover the real cost

of the British monarchy; If it seems a bargain at £5 million, that is because the upkeep of the royal palaces, trains, planes

and especially boats is carried by other departments. 72

That figure totals £23,152,724 ~ giving a total cost last year of £27,668,324.

The cost of the Civil List itself is subject to parliamentary approval but it is unlikely to be challenged.

The Idea of By Passing George VI Revealed LONDON (Reuter) — When King Edward VIII abdicated, the British

establishment considered bypassing his shy, stammering brother for king but dropped the idea when faced with a choice of a drunk or a bisexual, says a new book on the 1936 crisis. The kingmakers felt that the brother,

UNDERCURRENT OF LIFE STREAM In Buddhist psychology the process of the changing mind is

manifested in two levels or streams. The subconscious stream ‘Bhavanga Citta’ and the Conscious stream ‘Vithi citta’.

Each one merges into the other. The subconscious stream is the hidden repository of all the impressions and memories of thoughts

that pass through the conscious mind; All experiences and tendencies are stored up there, but they exert an influence over the conscious mind

without it being aware of the source of this influence. These two streams of mind being conditioned by each other.

The state of the active conscious mind and awareness is generally present during the day when one is awake.

It is conscious of all impacts and impressions continually received from outside, through the 5 senses or of sensations received from within by way of ideas

or thoughts or recollections of former thoughts. When this conscious stream which is constantly receiving

sensations, from within or without, subsides into inactivity, as for instance during sleep, the other stream the subconscious

(Bhavanga Citta) manifests ~ flowing like an undisturbed stream so long as the conscious stream does not arise to disturb it through the sense channels. When awake, every

time an arisen thought of the conscious mind subsides and before the next thought can arise within that

infinitesimally minute fraction of time, the subconscious stream intervenes. Then when the next thought of the conscious

mind level arises the subconscious stream subsides into inactivity ~ 101

Since innumerable thoughts arise and fall one after another during the day, so then are there innumerable momentary interruptions

to the flow of the subconscious stream during the day. The subconscious is referred to as a state of subliminal activity

viz. an activity that takes place below the threshold of the conscious mind, an activity of which therefore there is no awareness on

the conscious mind. The conscious stream holds only one thought or idea at a time whereas the subconscious stream holds all the impressions of all the thoughts ideas and experiences that enter

and leave the conscious mind. This subconscious life stream allows us to have a memory, conditioning our thinking and action.

The Bhavanga is the ‘bhava’ (existence) and ‘anga’( factor) ‘Bhavanga Citta’ is the indispensable factor or basis of existence.

The factor of life by means of which the flow of existence or being is maintained without a break. The continuing basis or undercurrent of life, the stream of existence keeping life going. This stream of being

is an indispensable condition of individual life. It is comparable to the current of a river when it flows calmly on, unhindered by

any obstacle, and when that current is opposed by any thought from the world within or perturbed by tributary streams of the senses from the world without then thoughts in the conscious mind stream arise.

There is a juxtaposition of momentary states of consciousness subliminal and suprasubliminal throughout a lifetime.

that the ‘bhavanga citta’ the subconscious Undercurrent ~ life stream is the creative energy free flowing ~ Sensations

essential for the human to live. This also dictates how we react to the outside objects,

with craving or aversion. This blind reaction from the deepest levels of the mind continues our ignorance and we create more negativities and defilements which in turn effect how we react to the next cause.

We then continue on this wheel of ignorance and suffering. If we can become Aware, equanimously of the Sensations on our body realising their nature is to always change this allows us to

Free ourselves from this chain of reaction and for the defilements to be expelled from the deepest levels of Mind.

Realise this relationship through the practice of ‘Dhamma’ and Vipassana meditation and it will lead to a harmonious, peaceful

life. Trust the wholeness of life and be happy, with no fear. Knowing also anything can happen anytime ~ that this lifestream

will leave when its time is right. Relax accept this natural existence and let it flow ~ just be aware and Enjoy the wonders of Life
