The goal of this conference is to allow masters students, PhD candidates and post-doctoral fellows to communicate their research in the form of oral presentations or posters, exclusively in English. The privileged international scientific frame that we provide is comparable to any major international scientific conference.

A wide range of topics in Life Sciences is discussed, which include Neurosciences, Immunology, Medicine and Physiology, Imaging and Bioinformatics, Cell Biology, Genetics, among others. This interdisciplinarity encourages young researchers from various backgrounds to participate and present their work, while exploring other fields.

Every year, we welcome young researchers from the organizing research centers - INSTITUT CURIE, INSTITUTE OF BIOLOGY of the ECOLE NORMALE SUPERIEURE, UNIVERSITE PARIS-DIDEROT, INSTITUT PASTEUR and the UNIVERSITY PARIS DESCARTES - as well as young researchers from other Parisian institutions such as the Collège de France, the Ecole Nationale Superieure de Chimie de Paris, the National Museum of Natural History and many young researchers from France and abroad. In addition, the public will be complemented by engineers, technicians, senior scientists, and of course group leaders and unit directors from leading research institutions.

In order to ensure the participation of an increasing number of young scientists at this conference, both from all over France and abroad, we rely heavily on the generous financial support and assistance from French and foreign sponsors, scientific scholarships and institutional grants.

This brochure includes information on the Young Researchers in Life Sciences Federation, the organization of this conference, the activity report of YRLS 2015, as well as partnership proposals.

Created at the initiative of the Association of PhD Students and Young PhDs of the Institut Curie (ADIC), co-organized with the associations of the Ecole Normale Supérieure (SPIBens), the University Paris Diderot (DiDocs) and the Student Association of Medicine and Pharmacy Sciences (AMPS), this event then merged with the annual Young Researchers Conference of the Institut Pasteur (StaPa). In previous years, the Office of the Museum Students (BDEM) of the National Museum of Natural History, the Circle of PhD students and Doctors from the University Paris Descartes (the Cartesiens), the Association of PhD Students of Chimie Paris Tech (ATCP) and the Students of the National Veterinary School Maison-Alfort have joined the organization committee and thus contributed to making it a multifaceted and diverse conference, highly attractive to young researchers.

The participating Associations form the Federation of Young Researchers in Life Sciences, and are represented in the organizing committee of the conference. Its

members, PhD candidates and post-doctoral fellows, manage and coordinate all logistical aspects essential to the set-up of the conference. Among other responsibilities, they are in charge of the advertisement, registration, selection of abstracts, welcoming of the participants, delivering travel scholarships, and invitation of chairmen and keynote speakers.

Our goal is to provide young scientists with an environment that promotes formal and informal scientific interactions, offering opportunities for career discussions and lasting international scientific relations. Surrounded by their peers, and in a friendly atmosphere where they feel less intimidated, young researchers are more comfortable to interact in scientific discussions and to start building professional networks, which are some of the key points of the YRLS Conference. In addition, the conference allows participants to present their projects even at the early stages of research, when new ideas are most beneficial. By virtue of the diversity of subjects represented at the YRLS conference master students, PhD candidates and post-doctoral fellows can receive scientific advice from various perspectives, helping them to advance in their respective projects and career paths.

The advertisement of the conference will begin in January 2016. Advertising will be done not only by the communication service of the Federation of Young Researchers, but also through communication and public relations departments of the organizing institutes, at as many graduate schools and research centers as possible both in France and abroad. We are, of course, also present on all major social networking sites. All essential information concerning the conference are posted on the event’s official website www.yrls.fr.

The 6th Edition of the Young Researchers in Life Sciences Conference took place at the Institut Curie, on May 20-22, 2015. All this event’s organization was managed by doctoral candidates and post-doctoral researchers coming from eight Parisian institutions, forming four distinct task teams that were responsible for the design and communication, the scientific program, workshops and keynote speakers, hospitality, the caterer and social events...

This year, we welcomed 215 participants from 55 institutes and 11 countries. During three days, the attendees were encouraged to interact in formal and informal settings, attending scientific presentations and workshops as well as exchanging during social events.

Because we greatly value and support international participation, ten travel grants were delivered to participants from Russia (3), Germany (2), India, the United Kingdom, Spain, Poland and Tunisia based on the quality of the submitted abstracts. In addition, a free couch surfing system was put in place to bring together out-of-town guests with Parisian hosts. Both guests and hosts have enjoyed the experience of meeting, exchanging and sharing with young researchers from a different background.

Sofia Celi, President of the YRLS Federation 2015, welcomed the participants. She expressed the wish that young researchers of today share the values and virtues of Marie Curie, co-founder of the hosting institute: perseverance, interdisciplinarity and scientific ethics. Then, Dr. Geneviève Almouzni, Director of the Research Center of the Institut Curie, opened the conference. She thanked the participating associations for their dedication and emphasized on the importance of partnership in research.

The participants could attend 36 talks during nine sessions, from Cell Biology to Physics/Chemistry/Biology Interactions, and exchange over 136 posters during three exceptionally well attended and dynamic interdisciplinary poster sessions. Each presentation was rated by the participants through a new, detailed, grading system. The best poster and best talk received a People’s choice award. In addition, fifty senior scientists and thirty researchers were invited to judge the talks and posters. A Jury’s Prize was then delivered for the best poster and best talk. To help them progress in their presentation skills for future conferences, speakers received their detailed grades upon request.

Overall, according to the satisfaction survey, the scientific level of the conference was rated good to excellent by all the attendees.

Two renowned scientists held keynote speeches: Dr. Thierry Naas, head of a research team on emerging antibiotic resistances, and Prof. Similowski, a French specialist in pneumology. Both speakers are medical practicioners, and were chosen on purpose, echoing the medical echoing the medical mission of the hosting institute, their talks enhanced the interdisciplinarity of the event and this diversity was well received by a majority of participants.

Pr. Ian McGrath, editor-in-chief of the British Journal of Pharmacology and Professor at the University of Glasgow, help the first workshop on “Scientific Editing” and introduced the attendees to the backstage of the scientific editing and publishing process. A workshop on “How to make an entrepreneur dream real?” was held by Dr. François Xavier Dutrieux and Dr. Daniel Ten Martin. The young entrepreneurs transmitted their knowledge and acquired experience in founding a start up in France in an interactive way. During the workshop “Finding and Applying for Postdoctoral Funding”, Dr. Pamela Rodriguez, Dr. Marc Gielen, Dr. Kanoelani Pilobello and Dr. Andrea Yao provided information on European and American fellowships and gave tips on writing fellowship proposals.

At last, Dr. Cyril Picard, Vice-President of the YRLS Federation 2015, delivered the final words by inviting the organising committee on stage and thanking them for their work. President and vice-president awarded the four prizes for best poster and best talk. Dr. Marc Mézard, Director of the Ecole Normale Supérieure, closed the conference by giving his insight on the recent and future topics of interest in biology.

To encourage the participants to connect and form solid professional and personal networks, several informal activities were organized. These activities are always complimented on and mark the difference to a regular conference, as young researchers may feel less pressure and reach out more easily when among their peers.

To break the ice, a welcome “Wine & Cheese” soirée took place the first evening. All guests were randomly teamed up to participate in games. After some laughs and a winner, all could enjoy drinks and appetizers in a relaxed and friendly environment. During the social event, a free guided tour of the Marie Curie Museum was offered, followed by a relaxing evening at one of the famous student bars of the Quartier Latin, in the spirit of the Parisian student lifestyle. The Closing Cocktail marked the end of three days of professional and personal development, scientific interactions over posters and talks, connecting and networking with colleagues and peers.

As in previous years, the YRLS Conference brought together young researchers from different countries, institutes, personal and scientific backgrounds. The experience of the older members of the committee ensured a smooth organisational flow, while the new members brought innovations that were applauded by the participants. The following numbers are the best proof of the success of YRLS 2015: 96% of the participants rated their experience at the YRLS Conference as very good to excellent and 99% would recommend it to a friend or colleague.
