We make this pledge to everychild and young person who islooked after or a care leaver.

The Pledge describes what wewill do to help you make thebest start in life.

We will do everything we can tomake sure that we understandyour individual needs and thatyou are treated equally to allother looked after children andcare leavers.

The Pledge has been designed by CLiCK,the experts who have grown up in care.Our aim is for young people to get thebest parenting possible

11 Ensure you have an annual health assessment

of your physical and emotional well-being andprovide you with a Personal Health Plan.

2 A nurse will be available for one to one confidential conversations.

3 Register you with a GP and dentist, make sureyou attend all your appointments for yourimmunisations, and arrange any other healthchecks or care that you need, like an optician.

4 Provide you with the information, advice andguidance you need and what you can do to havea healthy lifestyle.

5 Provide you with information and supportaround healthy relationships and sexual health.

1 Make sure that you know your social worker well andsee them regularly and are given opportunities to speakto them in private.

2 Recruit, train and support a good range of carers andcare staff to be able to meet your needs.

3 We will be sensitive when we consider your age, gender,disability, sexuality and any other needs you may havewhen we look for a home. We will also take into accountyour race, religion, culture, language and identity. If your home can’t do everything, we will try to meetyour other needs with additional services.

Independent –not influenced by the thought or action of others.

Advocate –this person helps you know your rights and will support youto have your views, wishes and feelings heard.

Appropriate adult –is a parent, guardian or social worker; or if no personmatching this is available, any responsible person over 18.

An appropriate adult must be called by police whenever theydetain or interview a child (Under the age of 18) orvulnerable adult. They must be present for a range of policeprocesses, including interviews, intimate searches, andidentification procedures.

6 Set appropriate boundaries for you to keep you safe.

7 Check your placement to ensure you feel comfortable.We will change your placement if it is necessary.When we do, you are involved.

8 Take action quickly if you go missing from care andwork with the police to get you home safely.

9 Give you access to independent advice and an advocate ifyou need support to have your wishes and feelings heardor if you decide to make a complaint.

Personal Education Plan –often called a ‘PEP’, this plan is an agreement between theyoung person and the team around the child. It will includewhat needs to be done to help you achieve your best with youreducation.

Designated teacher –a teacher who is responsible for the educational achievements ofany children in care in their school. They must make sure theschool does everything it can to maximise educational stabilityfor children in care.

8 If you have additional or special educational needs, makesure that these are understood properly and you get theright kind of help.

9 Give you access to a PersonalAdvisor to give you advice aboutyour aspirations, options andaccess work experience ortraining schemes.

10 Teach you to write a C.V and jobapplications, and to prepare youfor interviews, such aswhat to wear to an interview andpractice interview skills.

National Insurance Number –our National Insurance number isyour own personal account number.Every child in the UK gets thisshortly before their 16th birthday.

It is unique to you and you keep thesame one all your life.

It makes sure that the NationalInsurance contributions and tax youpay are properly recorded againstyour name.

1 Your voice needs to be heard, so make sure yoursocial worker and carers are following up on thethings you say.

2 Involve you and anyone sharing parentalresponsibility for you, in making big decisionsabout your life.

3 Be straight and honest with you and help youmake sense of what’s going on.

4 If you have a problem, you should be able to talkabout it in your review. You should also be giventhe choice to use social media such, facetime,Skype or WhatsApp.

Independent Visitor –is a volunteer who visits or takes out a child in care, talks tothem, becomes their friend and gives them support when theyneed it. They usually share interests and activities such assports, arts and cinema.

CLICK –is a Children Living in Care Kouncil which gives young people achance to have their say and gives young people the chance totalk to people who run the care system.

5 Social workers and reviewingofficers should talk to you inprivate; before, during and aftermeetings and reviews. If theyput forward your views, theyshould do it in the youngperson’s words.

6 If you don’t feel your voice isbeing heard, we can provide youwith an independent advocateto help you know your rightsand make sure your wishes andfeelings are heard.

7 Provide you with opportunitiesfor volunteering in your localcommunity.

8 Be the best role models for you as possible.

9 We can provide you with a mentor or independent visitorif you need it, who can spend some time with you doingactivities and

10 Give you the opportunity to join CLICK (children living incare council). CLICK is for everyone in care. It’s a place tomake friends and feel welcomed. CLICK is about makingpositive change and having a laugh!
