PURIM LAWS 2019 PARSHAS ZACHOR - On the Shabbos before Purim, we read a selection from the Torah (Deuteronomy 25:17-19) which reminds us of the cowardly attack of Amalek upon the unsuspecting Israelites who had recently left Egypt. Haman, a descendant of Amalek, continued in the nefarious ways of his ancestors by dedicating his life to the destruction of Israel. Parshas Zachor reminds us that Israel must always be on guard for the modern Amaleks and that we must never drop our vigil until Amalek is eradicated from the face of the earth. The Torah obligates us to listen to the reading of Parshas Zachor each year. TA'ANIS ESTHER - Fast of Esther – Wednesday, March 20, 2019 Fast begins at 5:47am. Fast ends at 7:50pm. This fast commemorates the fast and prayer ceremony that the Jewish community in Persia observed immediately preceding their assault on the allies of Haman who had vowed to destroy Israel. MACHATZIS HA'SHEKEL - In the days of the Temple, a collection was made during Adar for the maintenance of the Temple. Each Jew contributed three 1/2 shekel coins to the fund. We commemorate this practice by contributing three 1/2 dollars for charity. This is done at Mincha on Ta'anis Esther or before Megillah Reading on Purim. The proceeds go to charity. MEGILLAH READING - We read the Megillah on Purim, both during the evening and during the day. We pronounce three blessings before the reading of the Megillah (Al Mikra Megillah, She'asah Nisim and Shehecheyanu) and one after the Megillah (HaRav Es Reeveinu). We answer only Amen to each of these blessings. The Megillah is referred to as an "Igeres", a letter, and, therefore, it is customary to fold it in the shape of a letter and to read it in that manner. All members of the Jewish community are obligated to hear both readings of the Megillah since all Jews were included in Haman's plans of genocide. When the Shehecheyanu blessing is pronounced in the morning, one should intend it to include all of the other Mitzvos of Purim (including Matanos Le'evyonim, Mishloach Manos and Seudas Purim). MATANOS LE'EVYONIM - It is customary to give monetary or food gifts to each of at least two poor people on Purim day. According to many authorities, this is the most significant Mitzvah of the day and takes precedence over all other Mitzvos. MISHLOACH MANOS - It is customary to give two types of tasty, ready to eat food to one friend. Mishloach Manos are not sent to mourners during Shiva, Sheloshim or the year. However, mourners are obligated to fulfill the Mitzvah of sending Mishloach Manos. SEUDAS PURIM – A festive meal, whose menu includes bread and meat and/or poultry, is eaten in the afternoon and must begin before sunset, which this year is 7:09pm. Fish is not a substitute for meat, even when Purim falls on Friday. The meal may be eaten in the morning but ideally, the seudah should begin after the time of the earliest Mincha which is 1:35pm. Ideally, Seudas Purim should be eaten after one davens Mincha. It is important to be aware that the mitzvos of Matanos Le'evyonim, Misloach Manos and Seudas Purim can be fulfilled only during the daytime. AL HANISIM - This prayer is included in both the Amida and Birkas Hamazon of Purim - night and day. If omitted, these prayers are not repeated.
