Grants are capped at $5,000 and must cover direct fi eld costs.

Applications are considered throughout the year, but please allow a minimum of eight months before your fi eld departure date for the complete application review process.

Applicants are not required to have advanced degrees. However, any relevant record or prior experience in the fi elds of research, conservation, exploration or fi lmmaking and journalism should be submitted.

International applicants are encouraged; however, submissions must be made in English.

Applicants planning work in countries abroad must include at least one local collaborator on the project.

Grant recipients are expected to provide the National Geographic Society with rights of fi rst refusal for popular publication, broadcast and other media coverage of their project results and fi ndings.

National Geographic provides Young Explorers Grants to individuals ages 18 to 25 in an effort to foster the next generation of researchers, explorers and conservationists. These grants provide recipients with some of their fi rst opportunities to carry out fi eld-based scientifi c research, exploration, conservation, fi lmmaking and journalism.

Young Explorers Grants are consistent with the types of projects funded by National Geographic’s Committee for Research and Exploration, Conservation Trust and Expeditions Council.
