6 PHYSICAL MEANS OF
SEPARATION
You will need to set up the following before we start notes:-place a small amount of water in the bottom of your cup-draw a dark dot with marker on you filter paper about one inch from the bottom. (see picture)-place your filter paper in the cup of water so that only the bottom just touches the water (see picture)-fold the remainder of the filter paper over the side of the cup. (see picture)-your filter paper will be ‘standing’ on the side
MAGNETISM
If a mixture contains some magnetic particles, they can be removed by the use of a magnet.
FILTRATION
If a mixture contains both solid and liquid particles, separation using filtration is a process that may be implemented.
EVAPORATION
If a mixture contains a liquid with a dissolved solid (like salt and water), the solid can be separated from the liquid using evaporation.
DISTILLATION
In a mixture containing liquids that dissolve into one another, a distillation column may be used. This process is based on the knowledge that different liquids boil and evaporate at different temperatures.
CRYSTALLIZATION
Formation of pure solid particles of a substance from a solution containing the dissolved substance.
CHROMATOGRAPHY
In a mixture of very small solid particles in a liquid, chromatography is used.
