Reflections from: Roger D. Moore, M.D.
Families that eat together stay together. That common phrase is garnished with truth. Indeed the traditional and sustaining events of life from today back to antiquity are so often framed around a meal, often with a spiritual flair. As our dear ones enter the penumbra of their lives that nutritional event takes on more luster. But our dear ones often lose their enthusiasm for eating, and the subtle rituals that accompany a meal. It is difficult for us to accept the inevitable reality that folk, as they approach the final transition, no longer care for food, or are simply unable to partake. With the variety of methods to artificially provide sustenance prayerful reflection is often required in prudent decision making. To sustain a dying person a little longer with a feeding tube is a great “temptation”, but may be a means of prolonging death, not life. Our obligation as caregivers at Abraham House is to nurture our guests on their terminal walk doing all the ordinary things well (which in these days may be rather extensive) and to provide quality of days, hours, and moments before the final bow.
Thank you to all ofour volunteers who provide direct care or serve as a buddy
for our guests.Your gentle and compassionate
care is so appreciated by our
guests and their families.

With the upcoming Memorial Day, it is a reminder to remember and honor all of our loved ones who have died. At Abraham House we want to thank our families for trusting in us to care for their loved one. It is truly a privilege for us. They may be gone but the memories of your loved ones remain with you and with us. Our hearts and thoughts go out to all of you.
For those of you who are surviving the loss of a loved one it is important to remember that grief is a normal and natural reaction to loss in our lives. You will find grief is like ocean waves; it comes and goes. Some waves may be bigger than others, but it will always be a part of you. Many individuals feel guilty for “going on” after a loss. Please remember that surviving is both being loyal to yourself and to the memory of your loved one. We honor the memory of our loved ones by trying to continue to live well and to love well. I wrote a bill of rights many years ago for those who are grieving the loss of a loved one and I wanted to share it with you.
The Bereaved’s Bill of Rights You have a right to grieve over the loss of your loved one. You have a right to talk freely about your grief and to share memories of your loved one. You have a right to search for meaning in your loss. You have a right to treasure your memories; You have a right to feel your grief physically, emotionally and spiritually. You have a right to adjust to life without your loved one. You have a right to reinvest back into life. This is not a disloyalty to your loved one. You have a right to reach out and surround yourself with supportive, nurturing and understanding people. You have a right to forgive yourself for the “what ifs” and “should haves”. You have a right to believe in your ability to survive. You have a right to appreciate life for the gift it is. You have a right to love and be loved. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -- - -- -- -- - -- - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - -- -- - - - -- - - - -- - - - - -- - - - - -- - - -
One of our guests once said that “I want to die where it matters and that is why I want to go to Abraham House”. In this newsletter, you will see we are busy with creating fundraisers for one main reason: it allows us to continue to provide a loving home where our guests matter. We see every day the effect that our loving care has on our guests, so we know how important it is to raise the money to allow us to continue this vital mission. We ask for your continued support with our upcoming fundraising events. Please stop by or send your check to: Abraham House, 1203 Kemble St. Utica, NY 13501.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just like hummingbirds, with the magical whisper of their wings, there is something in our soul that wants to hover at beautiful moments in our lives, making them freeze in time. There is something in us that wants to fly backwards and savor once more the beautiful past. The hummingbird is the messenger of these beautiful moments. We at Abraham House embrace the hummingbird for never losing faith and reminding us of those moments we all want to savor.
