management, particularly at the executive education level. He completed his PhD in finance in Trinity College Dublin in 2007. He has delivered a number of excellently-received ACCA-exemption courses in his previous employment in UK universities, including the University of Essex. He is a passionate advocate of modern learning techniques and the power of blended learning approaches combining technology and practical exercises to enhance your learning experience.

Claire Phelan O’ RourkeBBS, ACA.CAT Courses

Claire has lectured on professional accounting qualification courses for ACCA, ATI and undergraduate finance and accounting

programmes for the past five years. She specialises in Financial Accounting & Taxation subjects. Her lectures aim to combine clear explanation of topics with strong interaction on the student’s part. Claire also brings to her lectures experience gained through working in practice in the areas of Tax and Audit of multinationals for over five years.

About Our LecturersOwen O’Reilly BA MBSHead of Professional Accountancy SchoolPaper Specialist: F1, P1 & P3

Owen is a leading lecturer (formerly BPP) with extensive ACCA and CIMA

professional accounting exam experience and over 35 student prize winners.

His focus is about your exam technique and your exam success. Owen uses his extensive industry and Management Consulting experience to bring his courses to life. He is well known for his brilliant exam techniques, student centred approach and entertaining classes.

A central part of his teaching is to use real practical examples to help students understand and apply the key concepts leading to very high pass rates and prize winners.

He is the winner of the UCD/NIB Smurfit Business School Masters Scholarship Award and a double CIMA prize winner.

Shaun Browne MAAT FCCAPaper Specialist: F3 , F8 & P7

Shaun trained as an ACCA accountant in the UK and qualified in 1990 whilst in practice. Once qualified, Shaun changed direction and moved to the ACCA as a training

consultant where he developed his passion for teaching and embarked on a 3 year training expedition for the ACCA running study schools in countries such as China, Africa and Russia.

Shaun believes in making the class as interesting and as much fun as possible so that students enjoy learning. He includes lots of anecdotes about his work as a trainee and a partner to help students appreciate the practical aspects of auditing.

Shaun is a great believer in ‘learn the basics’ i.e. you can’t audit a set of accounts unless you know how to prepare a set of accounts…in other words don’t take the auditing papers until you have passed or are studying for the accounting papers!

This advice has stood the-test-of-time with many UK, Irish and world-wide prize winners in Auditing to his name.

Brendan Foley, BA, BLPaper Specialist: F4

Brendan graduated with a degree in English Literature from Trinity College Dublin in 1996. He was called to the Irish Bar in 2005, and has been in practice at the Bar and

Barry has been teaching accounting and finance at professional, postgraduate and undergraduate levels since 2001. During the last six years, his ACCA teaching

experience has included the F3, F7, and P2 modules.

His popularity as a lecturer results from being exam focused, well prepared for classes and from his ability to explain complex accounting topics. In 2010, his ‘Introductory Financial Accounting and Reporting’ textbook was published by McGraw-Hill and has been extremely well received by teachers and students.

Barry is a Chartered Accountant since 1996 and holds postgraduate degrees from University College Dublin (MEconSc) and University of Birmingham (PhD). He also holds an ACCA Diploma in International Financial Reporting Standards (DipIFR).

Gary O’Mahony BCL, FCA, AITIPaper Specialist: F6 & P6

students on tax for a variety of professional courses such as AITI, ACCA and CIMA. Highly respected as a tax expert, Gary is regularly invited to speak on tax matters at various national seminars, where his pragmatic approach is welcomed. Gary has also written articles over the past 15 years for a variety of professional publications/ newspapers.

Gary has set and corrected mock tax exam papers for the CAI chartered accountant programmes and has contributed to the writing, editing and review process of a number of CAI and ITI tax texts. He was also recently an examiner for a professional exam.

Adrian SylverPaper Specialist: F5

Adrian has been a senior ACCA lecturer for over 15 years. During this time he has built up a considerable reputation for his style of delivery on ACCA

programmes. This experience gives Adrian a detailed knowledge of paper syllabus, examiners style and articles and previous exam papers. His lectures are structured to maximise syllabus coverage, practice past exam questions and focus on any past examiner articles in the topic area. Adrian also places great emphasis on practicing exam technique and time management which are critical components of F5 exam success.

Foundations in Accountancy (FIA)Incorporating CAT, Certified Accounting TechnicianFoundations in Accountancy (FIA) consist of a suite of awards, including certificates, diploma and a revised Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) Qualification.Students can qualify for additional awards as they progress through the full qualification. These flexible awards provide students with certification at each level as they progress their education to full ACCA status. The Foundations in Accountancy and CAT Qualifications are suitable for anyone who wants a progressively solid foundation of knowledge in finance and accounting. They will provide you with all the technical skills and knowledge you need to perform an accounting- support role and work at a technician level. No previous academic qualifications are required to study for these qualifications. The ability level is broadly equivalent to the first year of a degree programme/HND.

What kind of work can I do with this qualification?Holders of these qualifications could work in the following types of roles:• An accounting role in a small to medium-sized organisation• A financial reporting, financial support or supervisory role in a larger organisation• A financial supervisory or management role in accounts payable and/or receivables, or a financial role

in a fixed-asset accounting or a financial shared service centre• An accounting technician role in a commercial organisation

What’s involved? The Foundations in Accountancy offer the following suite of qualifications (with associated modules). To achieve the CAT Qualification you will need to register as a student on Foundations in Accountancy and complete the full nine modules (plus the ethics module and work experience stipulated below):

Becoming an ACCA-qualified accountant does not just involve passing your exams and the professional ethics module, you also need to complete our Practical Experience Requirement (PER). It is not just accountants who must gain relevant practical experience, many other professions, such as doctors and lawyers, also have to gain experience to show that they are fit to practise.

You can gain your practical experience before, during or after you complete the exams.

What is PER?PER provides a structure for you to follow by setting you a range of performance objectives. The performance objectives ensure you gain the experience to demonstrate that you have the abilities required to become a member.

Completing the performance objectives will allow you to:• Apply in practice the knowledge and

techniques gained through your studies towards the ACCA exams

• Observe and be involved in real-life work situations that help you to develop the skills, attitudes and behaviours you will need as a qualified accountant

• Develop your judgement, encouraging you to reflect on the quality of your work and how you may improve your work performance in the future.

*Extracted from www.accaglobal.com

The performance objectives are closely linked to the exam syllabus and we recommend that you co-ordinate your study and practical experience achievement to gain the most from both.

What do I have to do?To begin achieving your PER, you need to be working in an accounting or finance-related role. You will need to:• Find a workplace mentor• Complete 36 months’ employment in an

accounting or finance-related role(s)• Achieve 13 performance objectives• Record your progress using the online My

Experience record

If you think the opportunities to achieve your PER in your current role are limited, consider other options available to you before you choose to find alternative employment. Aim to get your employer’s support to help you gain your PER; consider work shadowing, secondment or an internship; and work closely with your workplace mentor.

If you are a full-time student or you are not working in a relevant role, start thinking about what steps you will need to take in the future to gain the practical experience you need in order to become a member.

ACCA QualificationPractical Experience Requirement (PER)*

In addition you will be required to complete a professionalism and ethics module called Foundations in Professionalism.

Furthermore you will be required to complete one year’s relevant practical experience in any accounting environment to show you can use your knowledge from the exams in the workplace. Experience can be completed before, at the same time or after taking your exams.

How long will it take to complete? It’s up to you as there is no time limit. You can sit most of the exams on demand as computer-based exams or choose to sit paper-based exams in June and December at one of 380 exam centres around the world. You can complete Foundations in Professionalism before or after the exams. So you could complete the CAT Qualification in one or two years.
