WHAT IS IT? I = Introduce (let readers know you’re

using a quote) C = Cite (tell me where it’s coming

from) E = Explain (why does it relate to your

proposition/argument/main idea?)Your challenge when you explain is to go

deeper! You use the quote saying kids spend more

time watching tv than they do in school. How does that show violence in the media affects kids? I can guess that watching a lot of violence is bad. YOUR JOB IS TO TELL ME WHY THAT MATTERS!

ANALYZING QUOTES We’re going to look at some examples of

using quotes in our paragraphs. Think about what the person did well. Think about what needs to improvement

and how they can improve it.

EXAMPLE 1Children are affected by violence in the

media. Eugene says, “Studies reveal that children watch approximately 28 hours of television a week, more time than they spend ins school.” That shows what kids watch when they watch tv.

EXAMPLE 2I agree that violence behavior is a

result from seeing violence in the media. Eugene V. Beresin asserts in many different ways that children and young adults see violence in the media. He states, “99% of homes have televisions.” This means that there are going to be some violent tv shows. As these violent shows become more popular, more and more violent shows will be created. Kids and young adults are impacted by what they see in these shows.

EXAMPLE 3I agree with the author when he

states that media violence has an effect on children today. It is scary that the average child views over 16,000 murders before age 18. Also, 99% of Americans have a tv in their homes. That is a lot of people. So those are only some of the reasons I believe that media violence has an impact on children and teens.

EXAMPLE 4Children will be aggressive if they

see violence in the media. Author Eugene Beresin writes, “The typical American child will view more than 200,000 acts of violence, including 16,000 murders before age 18.” That means that kids will watch thousands of murders and violence and might think it’s ok. The violence they see is so constant that they are immune to how bad it is. Violence in the media does have an impact on children.
