Bone Builders Update

Final plans are being made for the annual Leaders’ Training to be held on Wednesday, September 19, at the Bath Fire Department Community Room. This is the same location we have used for several years…50 East Morris Street in Bath. There is a pre-registration required in order to place the food order to the caterer. I must have the names of those attending from each group no later than Friday, September 7th. Please remember that if you made the commitment to attend, we expect you to be there. We have to pay the caterer for the number of reservations, not the number of people who show up on that Wednesday. Last year we had 12 “No-shows” on the day of training. The day begins with registration and a light breakfast at 8:45 am. Our speaker will be Sue Dunn from Community Services at St. James Mercy Hospital in Hornell. She and her colleagues will be focusing on breast and prostate cancer. The training has dual purpose…a refresher for current leaders and training for new people who want to become leaders. Please note new leaders will have to sign a permission sheet that day for having a background check done for Pro Action before you can start being a leader. We are usually done and on your way home before 2:00 pm. If you have any questions or want to sign up to be a new leader, please contact ProAction at the Bath office: 1-800-553-2033 or 607-776-2125. The receptionist will give me your information and I will contact you directly. I am looking forward to seeing you on September 19 and having an enjoyable day with each other. Tips for Elderly Caregivers Being a caregiver is a big job, even when the one you’re helping is a spouse or loved one. It can be physically, emotionally, mentally demanding and, if you’re a senior, you may easily feel overwhelmed or exhausted. That’s why it is important to take care of yourself in every way so that you can be the best caregiver you can be.

One of the best ways to avoid stress and anxiety is to stay as organized as possible. This means keeping track of paperwork, bills, medical information and anything else that’s important and making sure it’s all easily accessible.

Another important thing to remember is to make sure your home and environment is safe. Check rooms for trip hazards like loose throw rugs and make sure the stairs have a sturdy handrail.

One very important factor is getting enough rest. Also eating healthy and having some alone time will do wonders. Keep up good communication with your family so that everyone is on the same page.

Talk with our Caregiver Support Advocate to help identify resources that are right for you!

Nutrition and Eye Health - It's always best to get nutrients from foods.

Carrots may be the food best known for helping your eyes. But other foods and their nutrients may be more important for keeping your eyesight keen as you age. Vitamins C and E, zinc, lutein, zeaxanthin, and omega-3 fatty acids all play a role in eye health. They can help prevent cataracts, clouding of your eye lens. They may also

fight the most-likely cause of vision loss when you're older: age-related macular degeneration. Spinach, kale, collard greens, broccoli, and bright-colored fruits like kiwis and grapes.

These foods contain two of the best antioxidants good for eyes, lutein and zeaxanthin. Grapefruit, strawberries, brussels sprouts, papaya, oranges and green peppers. These

foods are among the top sources of vitamin C. Seeds, nuts, wheat germ, almonds, pecans, and vegetable oils. These foods are good

sources of vitamin E. Turkey, oysters, crab, eggs, peanuts and whole grains are good sources of Zinc. Salmon, sardines and herring have the most omega-3 fatty acids, but flounder, halibut,

and tuna are also good sources. Omega-3 fatty acids keep your heart and brain healthy and may also protect your eyes by fighting inflammation and helping cells work better.

Carrots, pumpkin, sweet potato, winter squash, kale and red pepper. Deep orange and yellow vegetables and fruits are top sources of beta carotene. It converts into vitamin A which helps prevent night blindness.

Plan Marketing and Sales Medicare has strict rules that insurance agents must follow. If you have agreed to meet with an agent, insist on having that agent’s business card for future reference. If you have any doubts about the plan being marketed to you, about your need for additional insurance, or about changing your existing plan, please call OFA. Our trained Medicare counselors are always happy to assist you. From Medicare.gov: People representing Medicare plans aren't allowed to:

Come to your home uninvited to sell or endorse any Medicare-related product.

Call you unless you’re already a member of the plan. If you’re a member, the agent who helped you join can call you.

Steer you into a particular plan.

Communicate incorrect information about their plan type or use inappropriate statements like their plan is "the best/highest ranked”.

Tell you about other plan options you haven't agreed to discuss, unless you specifically ask about them (to discuss these options, you need to complete a separate appointment form).

MEDICARE/HIICAP CORNER

Beware Contractor Scams! Up-front payments, we were just working up the street, the no-license discount– any of these statements should be a red flag! By following a few simple tips, homeowners can greatly reduce the chances of getting taken: Written contract: Always have a written contract before any work is done on your home or property. Proper credentials: Insist that your contractor have proper licensing and insurance and ask for proof. Check with your local building inspection department to see what is required in your area. References: Ask for and actually check references for past jobs. Your local building inspection department may also be able to inform you of any problems with a particular contractor. In this Internet age, there are numerous online resources that can help protect homeowners from scams. Your local Better Business Bureau and contractor referral sites such as ReliableRemodeler.com might be good places to start. If you would like information about contractor scams or have experienced a problem, call TRIAD at 607-664-2298.

Summer time for many means fun, vacations and helping others! Here are a few ways that you can make a difference for others and still enjoy some fun in the sun. Ramp Guys (and Gals!) - This award-winning program in Steuben County helps build affordable ramps for people who need help getting in and out of their homes, but the ramps can’t be built without the help of volunteers like you! Whether you have a natural talent for building or have never held a hammer before but would like to learn, there is something you can do to help individuals remain independent in our communities. As long as the weather holds, ramps will continue to be built throughout the county. Just give us a call to find out where you can help. 607-664-2298

Volunteer Program

Home Delivered Meals - Volunteers are always needed to help deliver meals to homebound individuals. This service not only brings a nutritious meal, but also smiles! For many, the home-delivered meal team is the only contact they have with the outside world during the day. It doesn’t take long - just an hour of your time. And you can choose when and how much time you wish to give. The need is greatest in Hornell and Bath, so give RSVP a call today! Helping Hands - For many older adults, simple tasks like the laundry can become exhausting chores. They don’t want someone to do it for them; they just wish someone can give them a Helping Hand. RSVP is partnered with several agencies serving Steuben County that bring the comfort of knowing that someone is there to help many older adults remain independent at home. You can give an hour of your time and make a new friend too!
