Letter from Fr. Paul Joseph Spellman

Today marks the fourth Sunday in which we have been able to celebrate Mass with our parishioners actually sitting in the pews. At my first Mass I started to say. "Wow! It's great to see your smiling faces!" But, I saw no smiling mouths, because they were all covered in masks. But, as my Mom used to say, "Some people smile not only with their mouths, but also with their eyes" and I saw a lot of smiling eyes!

This has been a challenging four months for so many people. But we are not discouraged by the darkness of the pandemic, or the violence, or the tension in our world. We are encouraged by the message of our Lord and Savior that causes us to gather together as a faith community! Yes, we are limited to 100 faithful people at each Mass, and everyone must wear a mask and practice social distancing. And we must disinfect the church before and after each use, but, despite these challenges, we know that Jesus is present in the Eucharist, the Sacred Scriptures, the Priests, and the Community of Faith. We will not be discouraged!

This weekend we are celebrating the Fourth of July, the day of our country's Independence from Great Britain. It is a day when families gather together for picnics and fun times with one another. Anybody old enough to remember the Bicentennial on July 4, 1976? I do. I was with three of my friends at Anaheim Stadium for the big Fourth of July concert by the Beach Boys! And I am still in contact with two of those friends. The third passed away from cancer some years back.

While we celebrate this Independence Day, let us remember those who fought to protect our freedoms. Those who put their lives at risk so that we can enjoy the benefits of freedom of religion, freedom of the press, freedom of speech, and freedom to gather. Freedoms that are not available to people on countries like North Korea and many others.

And, as we give thanks to those who have served our country, let us pray for those who are currently deployed overseas. May our loving God protect them, keep them safe, and bring them home soon!

May the Lord continue to bless us always and in all ways.

FACE COVERINGS: As has become standard operating procedure, the use of masks is obligatory and must be worn. Please bring your own face covering. We will have limited numbers of coverings available at the church entrance. If you don’t adopt a face covering, for whatever reason, you will not be allowed entrance.

SOCIAL DISTANCING: To ensure safety, the pews in the church will be clearly marked for limited seating and in conformance with a minimum of six feet separation (married couples and families liv-ing in the same house may sit together). Sections of the church will also be restricted from use.

TEMPORARY CONFESSION SCHEDULE MONDAYS and SATURDAYS from 3:00pm to 4:30pm

Our three priests will be available to celebrate the Sacrament of Penance (Confession). To respect the privacy of those confessing and to maintain appropriate distancing from the priest confessor, temporary areas for Confession will be located in the (1) sacristy, (2) Blessed Sacrament Chapel, and (3) Bride’s Room. Queueing will take place inside the church and the priest confessor will escort each penitent to the area for Confession. After confession is completed, the penitent may exit from the nearest door (the sacristy and chapel can access the adjacent doors to exit).

STEP ONE: RE-OPENING THE CHURCH FOR PRIVATE PRAYER AND THE SACRAMENT OF CONFESSION

OPENING OF THE CHURCH: The church will be opened for private prayer daily from 9:00am to 12:00pm. A parish staff member or trained volunteer will be present to greet all visitors. People will be asked to keep their visits brief, no more than 30 minutes. The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed every Friday from 9:00am to 12:00pm.

ATTENDANCE: The state has limited the number in any given service to 25% of the building’s capacity or 100 people, whichever number is less. We are very limited on the how many parishioners will be able to attend any given service. We ask anyone who is sick, 65 and older, who are imuno-compromised or who have underlying health conditions or who merely feel uncomfortable attending to PLEASE NOT COME. Note that the dispensation from attending Sunday Masses is still in effect until further notice. Plus, for some time at least, we will continue to live-stream two Masses on Sundays, 11:00am in English and 12:30pm in Spanish. A priest, staff member or trained volunteer will be stationed at the entrance doors so the number of those entering does not exceed 100 people.

RESERVATIONS: We will implement a reservation system for all who wish to attend Sunday Mass. Parishioners are requested to register online via our website (www.smmlomita.org) or by phoning the Parish Office (310/326-3364) and indicating Mass preference and number of people attending. Please note your first choice of Mass time may be filled so we ask for your understanding.

as a family, asking for patience, cheerfulness, and whatever other virtues you need to get

you through the day. Set an example of forgiveness with your children — ask for it

Hoy es el cuarto domingo en el que hemos podido ce-lebrar la Misa con nuestros feligreses sentados en los bancos. En mi primera Misa comencé a decir. "¡Guau! ¡Es genial ver sus caras sonrien-tes!" Pero no vi bocas son-

rientes, porque todas estaban cubiertas de máscaras. Pero, como solía decir mi ma-má, "¡Algunas personas sonríen no solo con la boca, sino también con los ojos" y vi muchos ojos sonrientes! Este ha sido un desafío de cuatro meses para muchas personas. Pero no nos des-anima la oscuridad de la pandemia, la vio-lencia o la tensión en nuestro mundo. ¡Nos alienta el mensaje de nuestro Señor y Salvador que nos hace reunirnos como una comunidad de fe! Sí, estamos limita-dos a 100 personas fieles en cada Misa, y todos deben usar una máscara y practicar el distanciamiento social. Y debemos de-sinfectar la iglesia antes y después de cada uso, pero, a pesar de estos desafíos, sabe-mos que Jesús está presente en la Eucaris-tía, las Sagradas Escrituras, los Sacerdotes y la Comunidad de Fe. ¡No estamos des-animados! Este fin de semana celebramos el 4 de ju-lio, el día de la independencia de nuestro país de Gran Bretaña. Es un día en que las familias se reúnen para picnics y momen-tos divertidos. ¿Alguien lo suficientemente mayor como para recordar el Bicentenario del 4 de julio de 1976? Yo sí. ¡Estaba con tres de mis amigos en el estadio de Ana-heim para el gran concierto del 4 de julio de los Beach Boys! Y todavía estoy en con-tacto con dos de esos amigos. El tercero falleció de cáncer hace algunos años. Mientras celebramos este Día de la Inde-pendencia, recordemos a quienes lucharon

por proteger nuestras libertades. Aquellos que arriesgan sus vidas para que podamos disfrutar de los beneficios de la libertad de religión, la libertad de prensa, la libertad de expresión y la libertad de reunión. Li-bertades que no están disponibles para personas en países como Corea del Norte y muchos otros. Y, como agradecemos a quienes han servi-do a nuestro país, recemos por quienes es-tán actualmente desplegados en el extran-jero. ¡Que nuestro Dios amoroso los prote-ja, los mantenga a salvo y los traiga a casa pronto! Tendremos un número limitado de revestimientos disponibles en la entrada de la Iglesia. Si no trae una cubierta de cara, por alguna razón, no se le permitirá la entrada. DISTANCIA SOCIAL: Para garantizar la seguridad, los bancos de la iglesia estarán claramente marcados para asientos limitados y de conformidad con un mínimo de seis pies de separación (las parejas casadas y las familias que viven en la misma casa pueden sentarse juntas). Secciones de la Iglesia también serán restringidas de uso. CALENDARIO DE CONFESIÓN TEMPORAL LUNES Y SÁBADOS de 3:00 pm. a 4:30 pm. El evangelio que leemos hoy es considerado como un meteoro caído del cielo. Para las personas que sufren, tiene una de las frases más consoladoras del evangelio: “Vengan a mí los que están cansados y agobiados, y yo los aliviaré.” Muchos subrayan que Jesús alaba a los po-bres y sencillos. Nosotros, aunque sabemos bien que el pueblo humilde tiene los defectos normales de todo ser humano y que no hay que idealizarlo, vemos con Jesús que tiene valores más preciosos que el dinero que es lo que el mundo suele apreciar. Los poderosos y sabios del mundo de su tiempo, los líde-res oficiales de Israel, no veían que los milagros de Jesús revelaban la llegada del reino de Dios. Dios seguía esco-giendo para sus planes, como lo había hecho en el pasa-do, no a los sabios y ricos, sino a los sencillos que no confiaban es sí mismos, en sus fuerzas y talentos, sino solo en Dios, y que tenían la mente abierta a los modos de obrar de Dios. Nosotros, ahora con Jesús, podemos dar gracias por lo que el Padre ha enseñado a nuestro pueblo sencillo a acoger su Palabra con fe, a recoger al huérfano y a cui-darlo, a ofrecer hospitalidad generosa, a no buscar abor-tos para protegeré el “buen nombre” de la familia, a no vivir afanado ni amargado, a compartir con generosidad, a celebrar con alegría sus fiestas, a aceptar el sacrificio, a expresar su religiosidad, a aceptar todo como venido de la mano de Dios, a ver en todo su mano, y muchas cosas más. Estas personas sencillas son las crearán un mundo nue-vo. San Francisco de Asís, ha dicho un historiador, con su humildad y sencillez, contribuyó a cambiar el mundo europeo mucho más que Napoleón con todas sus guerras. Los sencillos tienen poco que ver con los tontos e igno-rantes, ya que son lo opuesto a los sabios y entendidos del mundo; porque el evangelio se capta más con la con-ciencia que con la inteligencia. Jesús habla as porque a él se le capta más con el corazón que con la cabeza. La gente sencilla suele tener la conciencia más delicada,

mientras que los orgullosos la tiene embotada. Jesús nos invita a tomar su yugo. Para los judíos, la ley de Moisés o la doctrina de un maestro eran un “yugo.” Jesús buscaba en los suyos un compromiso libre y amo-roso de fe y adhesión a él, y no simplemente la obedien-cia a una serie de leyes y costumbres arbitrariamente in-terpretada como lo hacían los fariseos. Jesús invita a los cansados por las enseñanzas de los sabios, especialmente por el legalismo abrumador de los maestros judíos. Jesús invita a los agobiados y les ofrece amistad e intimidad, porque “la pena compartida es media pena.” Jesús no nos va quitar la carga, sino que nos va a dar fuerzas para llevarla, y hasta la va hacer más llevadera y ligera con su yugo que es el amor fraterno vivido en la sencillez y en la comunidad. El evangelio no es un yugo, sino que es un anuncio go-zoso de liberación, amor y solidaridad. Esta semana, en el Día de la Independencia, hemos celebrado la libertad e independencia de que gozamos en las Estado Unidos. Tendremos la plenitud de la libertad cuando nos libere-mos de la dependencia de cosas materiales y seamos ver-daderamente libres de espíritu. Muchas cosas materiales se convierten en un yugo que nos oprime y esclaviza. No negamos que la realidad es contradictoria: positiva y negativa, alegre y triste, día y noche, invierno y verano. Pero en cualquier circunstancia Dios está cerca de noso-tros, sin paternalismo, pero ayudándonos generosamente. Reflexión Hay que decirlo con claridad: los altos personajes suelen estar cerca de las clases altas. Pero con Dios las cosas cambian. Alegrémonos, porque El viene a estar junto a los sencillos, los humildes y los que más sufren. Y, cla-ro, viene con sencillez. Hasta el punto que corre el riesgo de pasar desapercibido. Nada de ceremonias rimbomban-tes. Nada de protocolos costosos. Hasta el humilde pan sirve en cada Eucaristía para ese encuentro sagrado.
