Letter from the Chiari & Syringomyelia Foundation

On behalf of the Chiari & Syringomyelia Foundation (CSF), it is our pleasure to welcome you to the CSF Night of Light Children’s Gala. We are thrilled to have you join us for this wonderful event. We are honored to be joined tonight by our distinguished patrons, whose collective presence has made this an evening to remember. Please join us in welcoming Her Majesty Queen Noor of Jordan; Nicholas, 14th Lord Fairfax of Cameron; Lord and Lady Malloch-Brown, the Honorable and Mrs. Christopher Burnham, and Mr. Randy Theken. Tonight, we hope you enjoy the company of good friends, while you learn about CSF and the work we are doing to find a cure for Chiari malformation (CM) and syringomy-elia (SM). These little known but devastating neurological disorders affect over 300,000 people in the United States alone, and many more worldwide. Your support and presence this evening is greatly appreciated and energizes CSF in our pursuit to fund a research endowment, which will enable us to fund much needed research into the causes of and, ultimately, the cure for CM and SM. Our goal for this evening’s Gala is to provide funding for a collaborative research project, headed by Dr. Fraser Henderson, into the connection between CM and autism spectrum disorders (ASD). CSF has had several meetings with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to discuss funding for research related to CM and SM. Documentation to establish a connection with other diseases and disorders, such as autism, goes a long way to opening doors at the NIH and obtaining much needed funding.  On behalf of CSF, have a wonderful evening and thank you for your support.

Paul J. Farrell Dorothy J. Poppe Chairman Executive Director

Letter from Dr. Fraser Henderson

I want to thank you for your generous contribution and to express the great appreciation of the Chiari & Syringomyelia Foundation, of our extended research group, and of the children and adults who have been disabled by Chiari malformation and syringomyelia.

To be 15 years old, bright and optimistic, and then to become totally disabled with pain, weakness, sensory loss and periods of confusion and insomnia is a great human tragedy. Many patients are given psychiatric diagnoses because most physicians are unaware of the profoundly disabling and varied neurological deficits caused by Chiari malformation. A greater tragedy occurs when a child already diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) develops the neurological deficits associated with Chiari malformation: the latter are assumed to be part of ASD and the neurological Chiari deficits fail to be diagnosed because of the overarching diagnosis of autism.

This gala is to thank you, who have given of yourselves, to help this vital research move forward. In addition to funding this groundbreaking research, our hopes are to continue to raise awareness of the disorders associated with Chiari malformation. The dinner and the talented performers are a gift from our sponsors. Your contribution will directly help fund the CSF Autism Spectrum Disorder Study.

On behalf of our research group from many institutions around the world, I want to thank you for your generosity of spirit, and your ongoing support and encouragement in this cutting edge endeavor.

Dr. Fraser Henderson CSF Autism Spectrum Disorder Study Chair

The CSF Project to Analyze the Prevalence of Chiari Malformation within the Autism Spectrum Disorder Population

There appears to be a substantial underserved population of children and adults harboring both a Chiari malformation and diagnosis of autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The ASD population of 2 million is increasing by 28,000 new cases every year, at least 1 per 150 live births (Bertrand, J. Pediatrics Vol. 108 No. 5 Nov 2001), and accounts for expenditures of $35 billion per year within the US.

Children with Chiari frequently have a tendency to headaches, neck pain, speech and swallowing difficulties, sensori-motor disorders, gastro-esophageal reflux, disordered respiration and sleep apnea - the same findings observed in the ASD population (Rimland, B. Autism Research Review International, 2005). Other shared deficits include loss of smooth ocular pursuit, dysarthria, abnormal motor initiation, disordered neuro-endocrine modulation within the reticular activating system and possibly cerebellar mediated alterations of cerebral activity (Courchesne, E. Neuroanatomic Imaging. Suppl 781-790, 2001).  This overlap of characteristics suggests that these disorders may be co-morbid conditions.  In the course of routine surgical correction of Chiari disorders, CSF researchers have measured substantial improvement in pain, function, and quality of life in ASD patients (Bolognese, Kula 2010; Henderson 2008, 2010).

Patients diagnosed with ASD at 1-3 years of age rarely undergo neurological assessment or MRI to look for other co-morbidities, such as Chiari malformation. In the ASD population, therefore, the opportunity for diagnosis and treatment of Chiari malformation is missed.

The CSF sponsored research project has three goals:  first, to establish the prevalence of Chiari related disorders within the population of ASD; second, to develop clinical biomarkers to more readily select which patients within the ASD population need further evaluation; and third, to determine in a randomized, prospective manner whether surgical correction of these established neurological disorders provides a significant improvement in neurological function, pain and quality of life in the affected children and adults.

The investigators believe that this proposed research represents an important opportunity to pursue a breakthrough in the treatment of some of the manifestations of autismspectrum disorder and Chiari malformation.

Your Gift Makes a Difference

CSF Autism Spectrum Disorder StudyThe CSF Autism Spectrum Disorder Study will fundamentally change the way children and adults with ASD and Chiari malformation are treated. We are not trying to treat ASD. Our goal is to determine the extent to which this co-morbidity exists, to define clinical bio-markers for children with ASD who also have Chiari malformation; and to then determine whether the disabling features of Chiari can be mitigated by surgical intervention. To do this, we must raise the money needed to run a large study at two major centers. The research is conducted on a very lean budget. The surgeons are contributing their time and skills in the firm belief this study will yield profound results. Funds will be used to reimburse the cost of testing, equipment and expenses not routinely covered by insurance.

CSF Hydrodynamics SymposiumJuly 8-9, 2011Zurich, SwitzerlandThis is an engineering/physics symposium focused on the motion of cerebrospinal fluid. Approximately 20 to 30 invited speakers from around the world will present their research that involves either experiments or computational methods to better understand normal physiology and diseases related to CSF motion, such as Chiari malformation, syringomyelia and hydrocephalus. While the speakers will be mainly from a technical background, there will be neurosurgeons present to help lead a discussion on the challenges of translating engineering and physics analyses into clinically relevant results. Nevertheless, the focus will clearly be on modeling and how it can help, rather than on clinical solutions.

Cape Classics was established by Andre Shearer in 1992, with a mission of bringing the crème de la crème of South Africa’s then-fledgling wine industry to the American market. Cape Classics remains the preeminent US importer of the Cape’s vinous trea-sures, and represents 21 of South Africa’s finest estates and labels. With a focus solely on South African wine, Cape Classics is committed to providing customers with a unique range of selections that are exciting and delicious and that offer outstanding value.

Currently distributing in 49 states, with key national partners including the Darden Restaurant Group (Seasons 52, Capital Grille and Red Lobster), Uno Chicago Grill, Ruth’s Chris Steak House, Flemings, Walt Disney World, Trader Joe’s, Costco and Whole Foods Market.

In their pioneering days, Apartheid-related political tension translated into an often-hostile American market for South African goods. The embrace of honesty and integrity in all that they do coupled with a tenacious, “can-do” attitude enabled them to succeed through those initial struggles and challenges. The same ethical principles that guided them then continues to shape the way Cape Classics conducts business today.

As an organization, Cape Classics stands for proficiency and professionalism, and we maintain consistently high standards of excellence. They deeply value the personal relationships they’ve established over the years, and treat their customers, suppliers, and employees with respect. They strive to make a positive impact on their community through their work, and support sustainability by partnering with wine farms and growers who espouse environmental preservation and holistic farming practices.

In addition to receiving the “Best Wine Importer” accolade in Food & Wine magazine’s Wine Awards, Cape Classics was the focus of a ‘Spotlight On’ feature in Robert Parker Jr.’s The Wine Advocate, and has been hailed a “Name You Can Trust”/ “Reliable Import-er” in Food & Wine’s annual Wine Guide for ten consecutive years. Through our award-winning portfolio, Cape Classics is pleased to continue to contribute to South Africa’s emergence as a wine producing nation worth toasting.

The wines served this evening have been provided by Cape Classics.

History of the Anderson House

The Anderson House was built between 1902 and 1905 in the heart of Dupont Circle, which was at that time our capital’s most fashionable neighborhood. At a cost of nearly $750,000, the Boston firm, Arthur Little & Herbert Browne, designed this Beaux Arts mansion to be the winter home of Larz Anderson III (1866-1937), an American diplomat, and his wife, Isabel (1876-1948), an author and Red Cross volunteer.

The fifty-room mansion is Little & Browne’s finest architectural achievement. The original property also included a walled garden, tennis courts, and a three-story stable and carriage house. The eclectic interiors of Anderson House dominated by English and Italian influences feature the painstaking work of craftsman who adorned the house with carved wood walls, gilded papier-mâché ceilings, ornate iron staircases, and intricate marble floors.

The Andersons built their winter residence in Washington, D.C. so that the rising diplomat could entertain American and foreign dignitaries and the capital city’s high society in a grand setting. For thirty-two years, Larz and Isabel Anderson were among the most popular hosts in the capital. During the Washington social season, generally between New Year’s Day and Easter, the Andersons hosted diplomatic and inaugural receptions, formal dinners and luncheons, concerts, and performances of Isabel’s plays.

The Andersons’ guest lists included Presidents William H. Taft and Calvin Coolidge, Sir Winston Churchill, General John J. Pershing, Henry A. du Pont, and members of the Vanderbilt family. Anderson House also served a public role as the occasional residence of foreign dignitaries on official visits to the United States, including the visits of King Albert I and Queen Elisabeth of Belgium in 1919 and King Pradjadhipok and Queen Rambai Barni of Siam (now Thailand) in 1931.

To furnish their domicile and provide an elegance befitting prominent guests, the Andersons assembled a world-class collection of paintings, sculptures, furniture, ceramics, books, and various other artifacts reflecting their personal interests and tastes, as well as the trends of that era. English paintings, French furniture, Flemish tapestries, Asian decorative arts, and antiquities fill the mansion.
