Values

You have 30 seconds... •  You have 30 seconds to choose one person and one possession you would take with you to a deserted island.

•  You can assume your basic needs such as food, water and shelter will be met.

•  What did you choose?

•  Why did you make your particular choices?

Values •  Values are anything that is desirable, worthwhile, and important to us.

•  They are influenced by family, friends, teachers, coaches, TV, movies, etc.

•  Each person has different values which guide his/her daily decisions.

•  When we really believe in something, it is difficult for us to behave in a manner that is not consistent with what we believe.

•  For example, I will will ask if you would rather have choice 1 (stand up) or choice 2 (remain seated)

Would you rather? •  Would you rather wear clothes with patterns or without patterns?

•  Would you rather be on stage or in the audience? •  Would you rather be an athlete or an artist? •  Would you rather spend time with your family or with your friends?

Would you Rather •  Did your choices become more difficult toward the end?

•  What is important to us, or what we value, influences the decisions and the choices we make.

•  For this reason, it’s necessary for each person to know what you consider to be important.

•  Personal Values Survey and Once Upon a Time

Once Upon a Time •  How did you feel about the decisions you made? Why?

•  Which were the hardest ones for you to make? •  Would it have been easier if someone else had made the decisions for you? Why or why not?

•  Were you surprised by the squares you had left at the end? Do these reflect what is really important to you?

•  If you were to play this game again, would you choose to have different squares at the end?

Values •  We all value different people and things for different reasons. Each person lives by different personal rules.

•  While it’s important to respect the values and rules of others, it’s difficult to be the person you want to be and to respect yourself unless you live according to your own values and rules.

Goals Do Goal Activity

Goals •  Goal: something a person intends to accomplish

•  Goals are what we aim for •  They are based on our values.

Why Set Goals? •  Setting goals are like a road map – They provide direction

– They help you focus on the important things

– They help you keep the end result in mind.

Types of Goals •  Short-Term: can be accomplished within one year (days, weeks, months) –  Improving grades at school – Making the basketball team – Saving money to buy an iPod

•  Long-Term: can be accomplished in more than one year –  Attending college – Getting a great job – Buying a new car

SMART Goals •  In order to set goals effectively, they need to be well written, or SMART! – Specific – State exactly what is to be done – Measurable – Include how the goal can be measured

– Attainable – Determine steps to reach the goal – Realistic – Do not set goals for something unrealistic

– Time Bound – State when the goal will be met

Things to Remember…
