Which flooring should be used?
• Durability
• Cost of materials
• Aesthetic considerations
• Noise control
• Fire and building codespg308
Non Resilient/Hard
• Durable and considered permanent
• Wood floors - complements any decor, costly
• Tile - lasts indefinitely, durable, easily cleaned, costly, cold, can crack/break
Pgs 309-314
Non Resilient/Hard
Types of wood flooring
Strip – Less than 3 inches wide, fastened to the subfloor with nails
Plank - More than 3” wide, fastened to the
subfloor with nails or screws.
Screws are covered with wood
plugs,
Parquet - Small pieces of wood arranged in
different patterns such as herringbone or basketweave
Resilient(Example: Vinyl)
• One of most popular flooring choices
• Less expensive than tile and wood flooring
• May have no-wax finishes that make care easier suitable for high traffic area
Pgs 315-316
Resilient
Soft1. Muffles noise, Insulates against drafts2. Quality depends on: 1-fiber content; 2- construction; 3-
depth of pile3. Padding is necessary for: - shock absorption; 2- insulation;
3-decreasing noise; 4- increase life of the carpet 4. Textures – berber, frieze, plush, sculptured, shag5. Fibers – nylon, olefin, polyester, acrylic, and wool6. Density of pile - the closeness with which yarns are tufted,
woven, or tied
7. Pile – Length of the yarns & Density – How close together the yarns are
Carpet Vocab
Types of carpet piles
Plush - Upright fibers under 1”,More resilient in shorter piles, susceptible to matting.
Frieze - An informal cut, curly texture because fibers are highly twisted, shows minimal foot marks, resistant, sturdy, durable.
Loop - Uncut, wears extremely well.
Sculptured - Combine various heights of cut pile and/or level loops, too much variety can cause poor resiliency, most effective when in a specific design
Cost and Calculations
• Flooring is priced per square foot or square yard
• How to figure it– Multiply rooms width by length (in feet)– Divide this number by 9 to find square yardage– Room measures 12ft X 10 feet. What is the
square footage/yardage? • 120 ft/13.3 yd
Don’t forget Installation
Average Costs
• Stone/Tile -- $6.00 or more square foot
• Wood -- $4.00 or more square foot– May need to be finished as well
• Carpet -- $8.00 square yard usually included pad, tack strip and installation
