The secret to a happy child

    (hateer yo"r #ac!gro"nd, whateer yo"r social stat"s or howeer m"ch money yo" earn, &

don-t care who yo" are6 if yo"-re a loing parent yo" will want the ery #est for yo"r child$

S"re we might want them to #e rich, good loo!ing, s"ccessf"l, #"t mostly we '"st want them

    to #e happy and healthy$

B"t there is a lin! #etween health, happiness and s"ccess$ So of co"rse we want o"r !ids to

grow "p to get 'o#s and earn eno"gh to get #y to ens"re their happiness and s"ccess$

    No one can g"arantee yo"r child-s f"t"re, and &-m certainly not going to do that$ B"t & will

tell yo" one !ey that will most definitely get things going in the right direction$ )r at least,

    witho"t this, there-s a pretty good chance yo"r child will str"ggle in life$

&f yo" want yo"r child to hae the #est chance at a #right f"t"re, if yo" want them to hae a

#etter start in life than perhaps yo" had, if yo" want to open the door to opport"nities, to

improe their f"t"re 'o# prospects and earning potential, then yo" need to ma!e s"re of this

one thing"st to ma!e things really simple, here are a few facts7

1 in ? children left primary school in 201@ "na#le to read to the re"ired

    standard % that-s aro"nd ?A,00 children$

    ?0 of p"pils permanently e.cl"ded from school hae diffic"lties in #asic

    literacy s!ills$

2A of yo"ng offenders are said to hae reading s!ills #elow those of the

    aerage ?%year%old$

0 of the prison pop"lation is said to hae diffic"lties in #asic literacy s!ills$

    10 to 1%year%olds who read for pleas"re do #etter at school$

eading #oo!s is the only o"t%of%school actiity for 1%year%olds

    demonstra#ly lin!ed to sec"ring managerial or professional 'o#s$

    * person with poor literacy is more li!ely to lie in a non%wor!ing ho"sehold$

    &n )cto#er 201@ English 1 to 24 year olds came 22nd o"t of 24 co"ntries

    meas"red for literacy leels #y the )EC$

:arents are the most important reading role models for children and yo"ng

    people$

id yo" spot that last one/ &t-s parents % yo" and me % who are o"r children-s reading role

    models$ on-t leae yo"r child-s f"t"re s"ccess totally "p to school, do yo"r #it too$

So if yo" want yo"r child to #e happy % now and in the f"t"re % yo" need to ma!e s"re of this

one thing to gie them the #est chance of e.periencing that happiness7

Your child must learn to read!

han!f"lly, there is one simple thing yo" can start doing )*3 that will help yo" help

yo"r child with their reading$ ead on to find o"t what it is+

The one thing you need to do NOW to get your child reading

So yo" want to !now the one thing yo" need to do to get yo"r child reading/ (ell it-s

    act"ally pretty simple and yo"-re pro#a#ly already doing it$

Sorry if that-s disappointing, #"t the one thing yo" need to do is< engage with yo"r child-s

    reading+

    & !now what yo"-re thin!ing$ :ro#a#ly something along the lines of DSerio"sly/ hat-s it/-

S"re, it so"nds easy eno"gh % and it really is pretty easy % #"t wow do we ma!e it hard for

    o"rseles+

Beca"se een if yo" thin! yo"-re p"tting in loads of effort % yo"-re reading to yo"r child and

listening to them read to yo" and may#e yo"-e een spent a heap of money on wor!#oo!s,

apps and whateer the latest Dteach yo"r child to read- programme is % yo"-re pro#a#ly not

    tr"ly engaging$

    Don"t boo# the bootcam$ %et

(e lie in a ery competitie society$ No matter how friendly the parents are in yo"r

    playgro"nd, there-s no escaping the disc"ssion a#o"t how eeryone-s child is doing$ Een if

no one is trying to ma!e anyone else feel #ad, it can #e to"gh to aoid comparing yo"r child

    with others in the class$

he res"lt of this can #e panic$ *nd panic leads to e.treme action % which isnt f"n for yo" or

yo"r child$ So whereas it co"ld #e yo" '"st need to spend a #it more f"n time with yo"r child

sharing #oo!s, or een #ac! off so that yo"r child '"st en'oys reading and reading doesnt

#ecome a feared or forced actiity, many of "s will instead ta!e drastic meas"res$

    5ay#e yo" enrol yo"r child with F"mon, or another e.tra t"ition programme, may#e yo"

re"est an "rgent meeting with yo"r child-s teacher, or perhaps yo" leae a plea for adice on

    Netm"ms, 5"msnet or social media$

3o" can do these thing if it helps yo", #"t o"r !ids learning to read sho"ldn-t #e a

    competition or a race$ 3o" can try e.tra t"toring or a ery e.pensie Dlearn to read- co"rse,

and yo"r child may improe as a res"lt, #"t is it really necessary/

effort$ 3o"-ll !now what they find easy and what-s more diffic"lt for them, and yo" can #e

aware of their challenges and #rea!thro"ghs$ 3o" don-t need to wait for yo"r child-s teacher

    hro"gh phonics children learn the indiid"al letter so"nds 8phonemes9, s"ch as JoJ and JpJ$

hen they learn the phonemes com#inations of letters ma!e, s"ch as JshJ$ hey then learn to

#lend the phonemes together to ma!e words, s"ch as JshJ JoJ JpJ K shop$

Children learn so"nds in gro"ps, starting with the simplest so"nds that together ma!e "p

short, easy to decode words, s"ch as JrJ JeJ JdJ K red and JcJ JaJ JtJ K cat$

:erhaps what conf"ses parents most a#o"t phonics is that there are more so"nds in the

English lang"age than letters in the alpha#et, which is why some so"nds are represented #y

more than one letter % for e.ample Ds- and Dh- together ma!e a Dsh- so"nd, as in the word

Dh"sh-$ o help yo"r child #rea! words down into its so"nds, yo" need to #e a#le to spot the

    so"nds and not so"nd o"t all the indiid"al letters$

o help yo" get to grips with the phonics so"nds &-e added recordings of them to my

    we#site here$Go listen to them for free$

Con)idence is the #e% + i) %ou sho* it, %our child *ill be brimmin *ith it too.

:honics has #een proen to #e an effectie way to teach children to read and write$ ;oweer,

it-s not all there is to reading$ :erhaps most significantly it doesn-t deelop children-s

comprehension s!ills$ &t teaches children to decode words "sing what they !now a#o"t letterso"nds, and doesn-t as! them to g"ess at words "sing conte.t or cl"es in pict"res$ he #enefit

is that children can learn to read anything this way$ he draw#ac! can #e that some children

    don-t deelop reading for meaning$

Getting to grips with phonics is '"st the start$ Learning to read is a s!ill and it ta!es time to

master$ Some children learn to read faster than others, #"t many will hit #"mps in the road$

or others it-s one long, ard"o"s 'o"rney$ Children str"ggle with reading for all sorts of

reasons, and een those that are ery capa#le may #ecome rel"ctant to read$

    *s parents it-s o"r 'o# to !eep enco"raging o"r yo"ng readers, #"t this can sometimes feel

li!e an impossi#le tas!$ he one thing yo" need to !now a#o"t phonics is that it is only the

first strategy children are ta"ght to "se when they come across an "nfamiliar word$ here is

m"ch more to learning to read$ B"t as yo" hae already fo"nd o"t the most important thing

yo" can do is tr"ly engage with yo"r child-s reading$ )ne of the #est ways to do that is to

ma!e it f"n I for #oth of yo"+ (hat follows is a list of reading actiities that are s"re to get
