Dear Clark County:

It’s going to be a vibrant summer at the Clark County Family YMCA and we’re glad you’re a part of it! This marks our 68th year serving the Clark County area in youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility, and with your help, we keep growing stronger every year. In addition to some of our most popular classes and activities—such as swim lessons, group exercise, water exercise—we’re pleased to call your attention to three new programs we know will address important needs for our members and participants.

SuMMer ProgrAMMing At evergreen SChool diStriCt SiteS We are excited to be expanding our summer camp offerings to children in the Evergreen School District. We will be at Fishers Landing and Endeavor as well as Felida and Salmon Creek in the Vancouver School District. Look in our youth development section to find more than 50 camps to choose from this summer.

enhAnCe FitneSS – Free to the CoMMunityYou can recognize an Enhance Fitness class by the relaxed atmosphere and the laughter in the room. A full hour of fun, Enhance Fitness focuses on dynamic low impact cardiovascular exercise, strength training, balance, and flexibility — everything older adults need to maintain health and function as they age. This class is free not only to members but the entire community!

PArKinSon’S boot CAMPSThis exercise class was developed specifically for a person with Parkinson’s who desires a high-level workout. This boot camp focuses on full functional movements using ropes, TRX, kettle bells, BOSUs, weights, boxing and your body. Taught in an interval/circuit training style to keep you focused, the class will encourage brain stimulation, as well as challenge balance and stability. Provided in partnership with the Brian Grant Foundation.

employee of the year: tracy Jenson - Personal trainer

volunteer of the year: Sharon dole

Sharon epitomizes what the Y is all about through love, honesty, responsibility, respect, and service. She first walked through our doors in April of 2012 for a “Healthy Living” tuneup. She found more, much more. And then she gave back. Her uplifting spirit is contagious to all. God bless you Sharon … we appreciate you!

Whether she is providing one-on-one training for a new member, leading a group of seniors in an exercise program, running one of our after-school enrichment classes at a local elementary school, or exhorting her charges in a weight-loss challenge class, Tracy performs with love and positive encouragement. We are truly honored to have Tracy represent the Clark County Family YMCA as one of the best of the best!

Membership in the Y is a special thing. Be a part of a leading nonprofit organization for youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.

Membership For AllWe believe everyone deserves a Y, so the Clark County Family YMCA offers financial assistance to individuals and families who might not otherwise be able to afford membership or program fees. Ask a staff member about financial assistance. It’s easy to apply and the Y does everything it can to make the Y a place for all.

volunteerSThe YMCA of Columbia-Willamette is an organization that provides services with the help of 3,500 volunteers. Like thousands of YMCAs around the world, our association is overseen by volunteers who tirelessly serve on boards and committees. So much so, those volunteers outnumber paid YMCA staff 3:1 in the delivery of programs and services. For more information about the many ways in which you can get involved at the Clark County branch, please stop by our Welcome Center for additional information. FloW yogA/vinyASA yogA Yoga focuses on building the strength, stamina, and flexibility of both your body and mind through a system of postures and conscious breathing. Level I is a thorough introduction for students new to yoga, with a focus on basic postures and incorporating the breath into movement. Level I/II is appropriate for new students who are comfortable with moving both on the floor and in standing poses, while still enabling more experienced students a challenge. While some prior yoga experience is helpful, it is not necessary and students are encouraged to work at their own pace.

Some of the well-documented benefits of regular exercise for older adults are:

• Decreasing the risk of heart disease• Decreasing the risk of cancer• Preventing diabetes• Achieving and maintain a healthy weight• Increasing functional fitness (endurance, strength, balance,

walk speed, reaction time, etc.)• Lowered risk of chronic disease• Lower risk of osteoporosis• Improved mental health• Better overall quality of life

rhAPSodybrandon berg – lead Pastor – 360-606-0462Rhapsody Church is an outward focused church that sees the Clark County Family YMCA as its home and wants to positively impact the lives of those who call our Y home. If you are looking for a church or just curious, give Rhapsody a try. You can come dressed to work out if you want, the Y opens at noon, and you can go right from the service to a group exercise class or work out on your own. Take the kids swimming or enjoy a pickup basketball game. Sunday 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

AlPhAAlpha is an opportunity to explore the meaning of life in a relaxed, friendly setting. The Alpha course usually meets once per week for 10 weeks, and includes a one-day or weekend getaway. Each session, people enjoy great food, laughter, and learning in a fun and friendly atmosphere where no question about life or God is seen as too simple or too hostile … questions like — Is there a God? Why am I here? Where did I come from? Where am I going?

Check with front desk for current meeting times.

dAily breAdRoger Button’s Breads are for many regular readers a source of daily inspiration. Filled with humor, observation, anecdotes, personal stories, and awe-shucks wisdom, Roger’s devotional reflections capture our hearts and imaginations. But there’s a greater purpose behind these reflections than entertainment value (as entertaining as they are). Roger’s principal goal is, in a word, pastoral. Roger hopes his readers will, in his own words, capture “a glimpse into seeing God, seeing Christ in the everydayness of life.” In these Breads the hurting find comfort, the weary find hope, and the heavy of heart find levity and joy. The impact of this ministry is evident in the responses that Roger has received over the years. Here’s to many more! Read them at rogerbutton.blogspot.com.

liFe With godLife With God is an eight-week course that will take you through the Bible. It is a course designed to help you see the “why behind the what” in the form of a conversation with God, using the means in which He uses to communicate what a life with Him is meant to be, the Bible.

What you will get from this course:• You will learn to read the Bible as a conversation with God.

What you will not get from this course:• I will not tell you what to believe. I will present the

material and help you ponder, but I will honor your ability to reason.

• I will not present dogmatic theology (theology based on a particular doctrine).

A note From our ChaplainLet me introduce myself. My name is Roger Button and I am the chaplain at the Clark County Family YMCA. The first question that many people ask me is, “What is a Chaplain?” This is a very good question. Many times people wonder what a chaplain does; they think this until there is a time of trouble or trial in a person’s life and then they know. I am here to walk with you if you need some help. I will stand beside you during the tough times. I will mourn with you and rejoice with you. I am here as an ambassador of Christ. I am here to advance the mission of the YMCA. “To put the Christian Principles of Love, Respect, Honesty, Responsibility, and Service into practice through programs that build a healthy Spirit, Mind, and Body for all.”

You might be saying to yourself, “Well that’s great but what does that mean?” The answer is quite simple really. Part of my responsibility is to build Christian-based programming like devotionals, bible studies, and outreach efforts. While I believe that these are important they are not the main emphasis of my job. I am your chaplain here at Clark. I follow St. Francis of Assisi’s model, “Witness continually, use words if you must.”

I am here for you.

In the words of Apostle Paul, “Mourn with those that mourn, rejoice with those who rejoice.” My door is always open and I am open to interruption. A little background on me: I am an ordained (We in Quaker land call it recorded) Quaker minister. I hold a Masters of Divinity degree, a certificate in Spiritual Formation and I am a certified Spiritual Director. I have been a youth pastor, an associate pastor, and a senior pastor. I have spent time inside the walls of the church but God has called me outside of the church a place that was modeled for us by Jesus.

I am humbled to be your chaplain and I look forward to meeting you and having a conversation.

Blessings,Roger ButtonMdiv, Spiritual DirectorChaplain
