from the pastor

(continued on page 6) (continúa en pág. 6)

Dear Brothers and Sisters, A few short days ago we celebrated the birthday of Our Lord. We acknowledged this milestone, as we do typical birthdays, with parties, presents, exchanges of love and thanksgiving for the presence of Jesus Christ in our lives. Often, in relatively close proximity to birth, family and friends gather together with a community of faith for the christening or baptism of a child. Thus it is that today we celebrate as family, friends, as a community of faith the baptism of Jesus. The words of Isaiah 42 mirror in almost perfect symmetry Luke’s Gospel account of the Baptism of Jesus. Isaiah writes that “Here is my servant whom I uphold, my chosen one with whom I am pleased, upon whom I have put my spirit.” This servant brings authentic justice to a world of systemic injustice; he proceeds with a measured tone and doesn’t drown out others’ voices. God called this servant to bring peace and justice to a human family fractured in its relationship with God; a servant who binds up what is tattered and broken; brings healing and reconciliation to the brokenhearted; opens the eyes to light which before had known only darkness; and sets free those imprisoned physically, spiritually or emotionally. The triumph of their liberty and freedom is the triumph of the human family. The language of Isaiah has God drawing the servant from himself; the mission of the one sent is intrinsic then to his very nature, whose essence is divine. To be sent as a “light to the nations” is to insinuate God’s divine will and plan for us so we can experience its reality for ourselves. God literally affects the transformation of our natures from one of estrangement and darkness to one of accompaniment and light. As The Navarre Bible explains: “The ‘servant’ can do all this because the Lord has ‘put his Spirit on him’, that is, he is someone chosen by God, and he has the help of the Spirit of the Lord to carry out his mission to teach His law to the very ends of the earth.” The connotation is that the initiative of servanthood does not derive first from the servant but from God. This allows the servant to move forward from a position of humility and reliance upon God who created him. The Spirit of God is infused into and grafted onto the heart of the beloved who has been called to service. As Blessed John Henry Newman said, Heart Speaks Unto Heart, Cor ad cor loquitur. The vocation to servanthood belongs to each of us as baptized Christians. This identity is what enables us to be apostolically available, in whatever life circumstances in which we find ourselves, to conform more readily to a heart of selfless service and freedom to say “Yes!” when the Lord calls to us. This spirit of generosity can help us to be a beacon of hope and light in a most uncertain world. This spirit was on full display this Christmas season as we gathered as a community of faith to celebrate the Nativity of Our Lord. The countless hours of hard work, done in a spirit of mutual love and support, by so many unnamed members of our parish family, is the living embodiment of that spiritual insight of heart speaking to heart. Whenever volunteers were asked to assist, you came forward to help. I am often reminded that, as important as is the work that needs to be accomplished and tasks completed, nothing is as important as giving of oneself without seeking renumeration or reward, of assisting others out of a motivation that is not selfish and self-serving.

Thank you for generously sharing the fruits of your labor and your gifts of time and talent with our

St. Pius community.

from the pastor (continued) We know that we grow ever stronger as a vibrant Catholic community when we get outside of ourselves, expand how we use our gifts and talents for others. The beautiful environment, outstanding music, ministries so ably provided, adds so much solemnity and mystery to these festive days. This means much to all of us. I received emails and phone calls from parishioners who have been away for some time due to COVID, and each one expressed their gratitude for the livestreaming and beauty of our celebrations. Several older parishioners who feel isolated and alone find great comfort and consolation by being united with us in prayer and spiritual communion. Your continued generosity and selflessness are truly transforming lives and making an immeasurable difference!

John’s Gospel today reveals in the flesh what Isaiah had long ago foreshadowed. John speaks of the people waiting with great anticipation and expectation for the Messiah. The ministry of John the Baptist had been so effective that the people began to wonder if HE was the messiah. It was only by truly knowing himself and his prophetic mission, and predisposed to a spirit of humility, that John was able to point to Jesus, who would baptize by the Spirit and fire, thus sealing for all the promise of resurrection and eternal life. John was able to articulate that salvation comes only from Jesus Christ.

On this Sunday when we commemorate the Baptism of our Lord, may we ask God for the grace to be truly humble and open to His work in our lives. As Jesus totally surrendered himself to the Father’s plan for him, may we generous in thought and deed as members of the Christian community. At the end of our days, may the Lord be pleased with us and say, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

As this Christmas draws to a close today, thank you so very much for the kind notes of thanks and encouragement which I received from you this season. I am grateful for the gifts which you generously gave to me. Thankfully, I have been able to share some of them with family and friends! I am grateful most for the ministry we share together in a spirit of accompaniment and fellowship. I pray that this new year of 2022 brings you and your families many graces, blessings and good health. I thank God each day for the ministry to serve the people of God and in a very special way the people of Saint Pius X!

Cub Scouts Christmas Giving

At their early December Pack meeting, the St. Pius Cub Scout Pack 110 got into the giving spirit of Christmas by creating over 40 cards for local seniors needing a holiday greeting.

The Pack also held a toy drive and collected 30 new toys for girls and boys in need. The collected toys were given to the St. Francis Center here in Redwood City to provide an opportunity for other kids to

have a present or two to open on Christmas.

Well done Cub Scouts!

Participate in Pope Francis’s Synod

Pope Francis invites the whole

Church to participate in the preparatory process for the

upcoming Synod of Bishops on Synodality. This unprecedented opportunity will

facilitate discussion and reflection to help shape the Church’s understanding of herself and her mission of

evangelization and forming disciples.

Synodal process will kick-off on January 15 with the Disciple Maker Index (DMI) Survey, a nationally

recognized survey administered at parishes around the United States and Canada. The results from this survey

will provide baseline feedback for next month’s engagement sessions to be held throughout the Archdiocese as part of the Synod of Bishop’s

preparation phase.

We are hoping to 100% participation from St. Pius! For the online survey (eff. 1/15/2022) and more information go to www.sfarch.org/synod.

Paper copies will be available in church and the Parish Center beginning January 16th.

St. Pius will be hosting listening sessions on Sunday, March 6, 2022 in Spanish and English.

Hail, Holy Queen

Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy,

hail our life, our sweetness, and our hope.

To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve;

to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in

this valley of tears. Turn, then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us; that after this, our exile, show unto us

the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus: O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

Amen.

Memorare

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that

never was it known that anyone who fled to thy

protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left

unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of

Virgins, my Mother. Before thee I come,

sinful and sorrowful I stand, Mother of the Word Incarnate,

despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy,

hear and answer them. Amen.

Mary, Mother of the Church, we implore your intercession for the renewal of our Church through Christ. We entrust to you our priests, staff and laity. Inspire our leaders to imitate your humility and obedience to God and be open to the promptings of the Holy Spirit. May all hearts be converted and reignited with love so that we

may be a people of communion in mission.
