UC Travel Interest Group While serving on the Board of the Council of University of California Retiree

Associations (CUCRA) during its early days of formation, the campus/laboratory

representatives would share their Retirement Association's activities at the semi-annual

meetings. Over time, they expressed interest in experiencing travel opportunities with

other retirees beyond local destinations.

I took this thought and decided to investigate what other Universities offered their

retirees. Unfortunately, I discovered that, of those I contacted, only their Alumnae

Associations offered travel programs as their fundraisers. After obtaining UC guidelines, a cruise trip through the

Panama Canal was offered in September 1999 and 154 retirees throughout the UC system participated in the

adventure. This reinforced the idea that the UC retirement community wanted to continue their camaraderie and

share travel experiences.

Since the commission received from the Travel Program was generated by all UC retirees, it was decided

that CUCRA should be the beneficiary to help support their mission and be able to send a representative to the

biennial AROHE conference. To date, the Travel Program has provided approximately $51,000 additional financial

support, over and above the annual campus/laboratory dues. This has enabled CUCRA to maintain low dues and to

implement additional opportunities in three ways: (1) subsidizing the cost of hosting CUCRA meetings; (2) a

CUCRA Grant program to assist member associations with one-time projects and activities that were beyond

normal operational costs; and (3) funding the expenses of a second representative (from locations without

professionally staffed centers) to attend AROHE meetings.

CUCRA Chair, Lee Duffus, recently noted "There is no question that the Travel Program income is not only

subsidizing CUCRA's operational budget; it is also being put to good use for retirees and retiree associations

throughout the system, thereby strengthening the entire organization and its effectiveness in serving retirees."

On Wednesday afternoon, at the end of

the CUCEA meeting CUCEA participants

will ride the bus from the Faculty Club to

the RRC. CUCRA participants will ride

with RA volunteers from the Sheraton

Hotel to the RRC. From the RRC, partici-

pants can participate in one of the two

following activities from 4:30 PM to 5:30

This group will walk to the Fallen Star

from the RRC, which is about a ten mi-

nute walk, at a moderate pace.

Do Ho Suh’s Fallen Star is the 18th permanent sculpture commissioned by UCSD’s Stuart Collection. It reflects Suh’s on-going exploration of themes around the idea of home, cultural displacement, the per-

ception of our surroundings, and how one constructs a memory of a space. His own feelings of displace-

ment when he arrived in the U.S. from Seoul, Korea in 1991 to study led him to measure spaces in order

to establish relationships with his new surroundings. He had to physically and mentally readjust.

2. Bus tour of UC San Diego's Major Recent Architectural Developments (Activity level: low)

Take a one-hour bus ride around campus to see some of UCSD's major new developments. Starting

from the UCSD Retirement Resource Center at 4:30 PM, you'll be given a one-hour grand tour of some of

the newest, sleekest additions to UC San Diego's upper campus. The bus tour will bring you back to the

RRC at 5:30 PM, just in time to participate in the lovely, pre-dinner reception.

Diego campus. A delicious menu and fascinating presentation by UC San Diego Associate Professor of Engineering, Todd

Coleman, awaits you. Professor Coleman was just named by San Diego Magazine as "One of 50 People to Watch". Here is a

great opportunity to hear what all the buzz is about, and learn about his cutting edge research in wearable bioinformatics.

Professor Todd Coleman’s research is multi-disciplinary at its core. His main goal is to use tools from information theo-ry, neuroscience, machine learning and bioelectronics to understand – and con-

trol – interacting systems with biological and computer parts. His research in de-veloping multi-functional, flexible bio-electronics are enabling wireless health applications that are minimally observable to the user. His brain-machine inter-face research uses information theory, control theory and neuroscience to inter-pret – and design – systems from the viewpoint of multiple agents cooperating to achieve a common goal. The benefits of this research include helping subjects with disabilities as well as enabling all members of society to enhance capabilities in many daily activities. His research on causal inference uses information theory and machine learning to understand causal relationships in time series of data. Within the context of neuroscience, it is being used to understand dynamical as-pects of brain function. The approach is applicable to arbitrary modalities and to a variety of applications, including financial networks, social networks and network security.

Spouses are welcome to attend the

UC Travel Interest Group While serving on the Board of the Council of University of California Retiree

Associations (CUCRA) during its early days of formation, the campus/laboratory

representatives would share their Retirement Association's activities at the semi-annual

meetings. Over time, they expressed interest in experiencing travel opportunities with

other retirees beyond local destinations.

I took this thought and decided to investigate what other Universities offered their

retirees. Unfortunately, I discovered that, of those I contacted, only their Alumnae

Associations offered travel programs as their fundraisers. After obtaining UC guidelines, a cruise trip through the

Panama Canal was offered in September 1999 and 154 retirees throughout the UC system participated in the

adventure. This reinforced the idea that the UC retirement community wanted to continue their camaraderie and

share travel experiences.

Since the commission received from the Travel Program was generated by all UC retirees, it was decided

that CUCRA should be the beneficiary to help support their mission and be able to send a representative to the

biennial AROHE conference. To date, the Travel Program has provided approximately $51,000 additional financial

support, over and above the annual campus/laboratory dues. This has enabled CUCRA to maintain low dues and to

implement additional opportunities in three ways: (1) subsidizing the cost of hosting CUCRA meetings; (2) a

CUCRA Grant program to assist member associations with one-time projects and activities that were beyond

normal operational costs; and (3) funding the expenses of a second representative (from locations without

professionally staffed centers) to attend AROHE meetings.

CUCRA Chair, Lee Duffus, recently noted "There is no question that the Travel Program income is not only

subsidizing CUCRA's operational budget; it is also being put to good use for retirees and retiree associations

throughout the system, thereby strengthening the entire organization and its effectiveness in serving retirees."

1. Parking:

For those not staying at the Sheraton: If you are coming to the CUCRA/CUCEA Confer‐ence, and are not staying at the Sheraton ‐ La Jolla, the price to park in a Faculty Club parking spot is $2 for two hours, $4 for four hours, and $7 for eight hours. You may pay this fee at the Faculty Club Welcome Desk on the le as you enter. Then, please return to your vehicle and place the parking pass on your vehicle's dashboard.

For those staying at the Sheraton: If you are staying at the Sheraton ‐ La Jolla, the price to self‐park in the large, well‐lit parking lot adjacent to the entry, is $15 per day. This allows in and out privileges. The Sheraton does not offer valet parking.
