Most of Laurence’s teaching career of 37 years was spent in Yorkton Public and Yorkton Regional Boards in Yorkton, SK. Laurence taught three years at Baden Soellingen, Germany teaching at the Canadian Armed Forces Senior School, a career highlight for our family, as we were able to explore Europe and the U.K. Laurence’s interests were varied. Laurence was involved in a variety of professional roles within the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation. He spent many years involved with the Yorkton Short Film and Video Festival. Upon retirement he served on the Parkland College Board. When Laurence and Marilyn moved to Lloydminster in 2000, Laurence continued being involved in different organizations. Over the years, he enjoyed skiing, curling, golfing, canoeing, photography, travelling and time spent at the cabin with family and lake friends. Laurence was very proud of his children and especially his grandchildren. Spending time with them all was very important. We can say Laurence had a full life and we will miss him dearly. Mary’s parents, Mike and Natty Perpulak, came over from Ukraine in the early 1900s to homestead land just outside of Wroxton, where Mary was born on January 7, 1917. She was part of a family of seven children, with one brother and five sisters. Her father was active in the Ukrainian Church as cantor and was known for his excellent voice. From her father Mary learned to sing and she was often heard singing as she worked. In her later years, she joined the Pleasant Company Singers. As was the custom, in her early years, Mary worked on the farm in what- ever capacity that was required. She left school with only a grade 10 education, which was some- thing she always regretted. How- ever, this became a driving point in the education of her family. In 1934, she married Peter Alexander Howorth, with a dowry of three cows. They built a log house with two rooms and outbuildings. In 1948 they moved to a farm three miles north of Whitewood. Mary and Peter were held in high regard within the community and were available to help anyone with farming, fixing cars, preparing meals and providing whatever help was needed. Never was any- one turned away without a big hot meal or at least coffee. Mary continued to contribute to the community and was especially known for her home- made bread at bake sales. Mary was an active worker for the CWL, Scissors Creek Guild, Pleasant Company Singers, St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and the Whitewood Nursing Home. She enjoyed knitting and quilting and mostly just enjoyed her family and friends. Her garden was her special relaxation. We will miss this lovely, special lady, but we know she is at peace now. Mary was predeceased by her parents Mike and Natty Perpulak, her sisters Annie, Elsie, Irene, Pearl, Bella and Sister Vitalia, brother Peter, husband Peter, son Robert and three grandchildren. She is survived by daughter Ethel (Gary) Hughes from California, son Lawrence Howorth from Texas and daughter Audrey (Darryl) Francis from Olds, AB; daughter-in-law Lois Howorth from Calgary, AB; nine grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews throughout Canada. Mass of Christian Burial for Mary was celebrated on Wednesday, January 28, 2015 at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Whitewood, with the Rev. Fr. Rene Mangahas presiding. The scriptures were read by Mary Wintonyk and Peter Moroz and the gift bearers were Kim Lucyk and Holly Rippey. Honorary pallbearers were all those who touched Mary’s life. Interment took place in the Whitewood Cemetery with Lee Ashfield, Craig Lucyk, Brett Ashfield, Jeffery Lucyk, Don Howorth, Cliff Shibulak acting as pallbearers. Arrangements were entrusted to Matthews Funeral Home, Whitewood. FEDORN - William Lyle Fedorn was born on July 29, 1922 in Winnipeg, MB. Bill attended elementary and high school in Winnipeg. At an early age, Bill knew he wanted to make the military his career. PLAN NUMBER 5-3-642

CONTEMPORARY RANCHER

Rustic exterior details lend this contemporary rancher the air of a charming country cot-tage.

Solid logs support the gabled roof over the front porch, and are repeated on both sides of the dou-ble garage. Shingles fill the three gables, one of which boasts an attrac-tive arched window.

Even the panelled garage door, with its nar-row arched windows, exudes character.

Inside, this three-bed-room rancher boasts a practical floor plan with a bonus: a 398-square-foot games room over the garage.

The covered front entry opens to a compact foyer that leads directly into the multi-purpose great room. This open living space has a styl-ish gas fireplace in one corner, as well as space for either a free-standing or built-in entertainment unit. French doors open onto a covered porch, ideal for year-round grilling.

The adjacent kitch-en includes everything

the contemporary cook might desire, including a raised eating bar, a full complement of modern appliances and a conve-nient pantry.

While simple meals for one or two people are likely to be served at the eating bar, the dining area next to the kitchen has plenty of room for more formal dinners with family and friends. Natural light will stream into the dining area through windows on three sides.

From the kitchen, a door leads to the double garage, passing a storage room, and the laundry on the way.

A staircase from the foyer climbs to the games room over the garage. This space could serve as a home office, for stor-age or for playing games such as billiards or table tennis.

The bedroom wing is located to the right of the main entry. Two smaller bedrooms face the street, while the master bed-room suite overlooks the back garden.

The master suite has a walk-in closet, a niche for a television and an elegant corner en-suite bathroom with a soaker

tub. Another three-piece bathroom serves the sec-ondary bedrooms.

This home measures 50 feet wide by 59 feet, 6 inches deep, for a total living area of 1,610 square feet.

Plans for design 5-3-642 are available for $725 (set of 5), $820(set of 8) and $896 for a super set of 10. Also add $35.00 for Priority charges within B.C. or $60.00 outside of B.C. Please add 12% H.S.T., 13% H.S.T. Or 5% G.S.T (where applicable) to both the plan price and Priority charges.

Our NEW 45TH Edition of the Home Plan Catalogue containing over 300 plans is avail-able for $15.50 (includes taxes, postage and han-dling). Make all cheque and money orders pay-able to “Jenish House Design” and mail to:

quickly, I can get lost in a canvas for hours on end,” he explained.

“With a full time job during the day and hockey at night, I usually find myself only paint-ing on the weekends. Depending on canvas size and detail, I’d say a painting averages about 18 man hours.”

Denesowych currently focuses on using acrylic paints.

“I haven’t experi-mented much with other mediums. That’s what my mother had in the house when I was young and

experimenting,” he said. “Plus Yorkton doesn’t have much for art sup-plies, so I find myself using acrylic because they are the easiest to get my hands on.”

To help pay for his art supplies Denesowych is beginning to market his work.

“I have just recently taken commissions,” he said. “I recently did a painting of a receiver for the Canadian Women’s Tackle Football Team.

“I am currently work-ing on a football piece for a surprise birthday gift.”

As for his own favour-ite works, not surprising-

ly given his current rechockey focus, two of thethree pieces feature net-minders.

“My Curtis Joesph ‘CUJO’, Lanny McDonald‘Out on Top’ and Ken Dryden ‘Iconic’ are all tied for my top piecesbecause of the challenge I presented myself withall of them, the detail and how the turned out exceeding all expecta-tions felt phenomenal,” he said.

Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Inc. (PotashCorp) and the food banks of Saskatchewan wrapped up a matching gift campaign to support the province’s vulnerable citizens and thanked people for their gener-osity. Over the holiday season, cash donations to Saskatchewan food banks exceeded $2 mil-lion with an additional $1 million in support from PotashCorp.

“For the fourth con-secutive year, we would like to thank gener-ous donors from across Saskatchewan for their support. Their contribu-tions reached a record high,” said Jochen Tilk, PotashCorp’s President and CEO. “Our company is committed to being part of the food solution, both locally and globally. We’re very pleased that Saskatchewan’s citizens share this vision and sup-port the amazing work done by our local food banks.”

Since 2010 Saskatchewan holi-day food bank cam-paigns, combined with PotashCorp’s $5 million of support, have raised more than $12.5 million to feed those in need in the communities of the 35 food banks across the province.

“The depth of grati-tude that we feel for PotashCorp’s leadership in food security is dif-ficult to express,” said Steve Compton, Acting Executive Director of the Food Banks of Saskatchewan and Executive Director of the Regina Food Bank. “The company inspires people across the prov-ince with their matching gift campaign; they’re a proactive contributor to the local food solution. PotashCorp’s continued support is an absolute game changer for food banks in Saskatchewan.”

“The support we received during the holiday season is truly incredible, and we are grateful beyond words. This strong support tells us that thousands of people are passionate

about the right to access nutritious food and the chance to build a bet-ter future,” said Laurie O’Connor, Executive Director of the Saskatoon Food Bank and Learning Centre. “We plan to dem-onstrate our gratitude by bringing the same level of commitment, energy and compassion to our role in actively reducing poverty in Saskatchewan.”

Despite the province’s prosperity, food bank usage in Saskatchewan has increased by more than 50 percent since 2008.

According to the HungerCount 2014 report, in one month nearly 27,000 people were assisted by food banks in Saskatchewan and almost half of those were children.

The funds raised

through the campaign will help food banks across the province buy supplies and equipment, deliver programs, restockshelves and support the province’s vulnerable cit-izens with programs and services.

As the world’s largestcrop nutrient company,PotashCorp plays anintegral role in globalfood production. The company produces thethree essential nutrientsrequired to help farm-ers grow healthier, more abundant crops. With global populations ris-ing and diets improving in developing countries, crop nutrients such aspotash, phosphates and nitrogen offer a respon-sible and practical solu-tion to help produce thefood we need, from the land we have.

The unique and essential Christian headgearNever jump off a

bridge to rescue a hat, someone wise told me once. Not even, I sup-pose, the most recent addition to my winter wardrobe arsenal. Brown mock-suede with a deep fur trim, I wear it only when winter slaps my face, mocks the memory of summer and sucks every thought but one through the top of my head: Are you nuts? GO BACK INSIDE!”

The driveway needed digging out the other day, one of those face-slapping Arctic weather days when the thermom-eter plunged to thirty-six degrees below zero. I dressed in layers like an onion: Tights. Long socks on top of tights. Jeans on top of long socks. Shirt. Extra shirt. Sweater on top of extra shirt. Two

layers of fleece fashioned into a black triangle that covers the lower half of my face and fastens behind my head. Calf-length navy coat with two layers, zippers, buttons and hood. Before lifting the hood, I added the best layer of all: the hat.

My fashionable rela-tives (who live in warmer climes) would disown me on the spot. (Those who still admit to owning me in the first place may reconsider.) But some

things don’t matter in extreme cold.

In my Facebook pro-file picture, I’m wearing the hat. “You look like a Russian,” many of my friends commented. I told them I come hon-estly by that look. Before they emigrated to Canada in the early 1900s, my German grandparents lived in Ukraine, then still part of the Russian Empire. I have photos of them taken on their Saskatchewan home-

stead in winter, wear-ing hats similar to mine. Standing beside my shov-el in my suburban drive-way, I look a lot like them.

The hat sedates that inner voice that shrieks retreat. I like things that help me ignore coward-ly thoughts. Boldness doesn’t come naturally to this prairie chicken. I have to practice it.

In the chill of today’s anti-God social climate and “anything goes” spiritual climate, it also takes a layered approach to keep one’s spirit warm. But every person of bold faith I know applies them – a passion for truth, the study of scripture, pray-er, solid teaching and a close community of fellow believers.

Most important of all is the hat. Not a fur cap like mine, or any physic-

al hat, but a prayerfullykept pattern of thinking that insulates against fierce winds that run con-trary to biblical faith.

The Apostle Paul talks about that in his letter to the Philippian church, when he advised believ-ers, “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.”

The hat isn’t always an easy or comfortablefit. Christ-followers boldenough to wear it are rarely popular and, likeJesus, scorned by themore “fashionable” reli-gious set. Nevertheless, developing a mindset that practices thinking and acting like Christ, that serves others instead of itself – that hat is worthjumping off a bridge to rescue. Because putting it on and keeping it onchanges the world.
