Principal’s Message

As most of us struggle to get up in the morning as it is dark and cold, some of our students are struggling to get up due to lack of sleep. Young people need 9-10 hours of sleep a night and with hectic lifestyles, sometimes this becomes difficult. Family routines (scheduled mealtimes, wind down time and a set bedtime) assist but many parents are battling technology. Josie showed amazing fine motor skills when measuring, Grace was incredibly enthusiastic, Tyson showed quick understanding of concepts, Harrison ensured his group were well prepared, Jaylen showed great numeracy when adjusting amounts used and Noah enjoyed playing the professor.

All the students successfully grew crystals and have made the minimum size criteria. Crystals are judged on sharpness of edge and transparency. Students are in the process of finalising their entries to send off. Judging is on Saturday 25th August and the Open Day for the awards is Sunday 26th August at The Festival Functions, 292 Findon Road, Findon. Good luck to our budding scientists!

Whole School Assembly

Will be held on Tuesday 4th September at 1:20pm. There are some students out on this day but it is the day that Malcolm McInerney is available to come and present the Premier’s ANZAC Prize. We will also be celebrating the Surf Teams success.

National Support Staff Week

Is next week (13/8 to 17/8). We appreciate all of the work our SSO’s do in the school and staff will show their gratitude during the week. If you would like to thank an SSO feel free to drop in cards/notes etc at the front office.

NAPLAN Online From 2019 Yorketown Area School students will be undertaking NAPLAN tests online. In coming weeks the school will undertake some readiness testing to ensure that our computer systems are adequate and teachers administering the test are familiar with the process. A number of students will undertake a NAPLAN Online combination test and a writing test. These tests are for the purpose of ensuring that we can efficiently

administer the NAPLAN in 2019 and therefore no results will be published.

Bookweek

27th September 1.30 - 5.30 pm

Book Week is coming up in Week 5 of this term. The theme for this year is ‘Find Your Treasure.’

The Junior School will be celebrating by hosting a special dress up day on Wednesday, August 22. We would like students to come dressed up as their favourite book character. We will be asking for a gold coin donation to participate. The money raised will go towards the drought relief fund for farmers.

There will be a low key parade and prizes will be presented for the most creative costumes. There will also be some special activities organised in the library. We look forward to everyone participating and having a fun day!

Sport

SAPSASA Basketball

Girls The year 6/7 girls Yorketown Basketball Team had a great run last Wednesday! There was great competition between the girl’s teams on the day. They worked extremely hard as a team, winning 3/5 games with a small loss of 3 points to Minlaton in their first game and then going down fighting in their last game against Warooka! They all played extremely well resulting in a very successful day. Well done girls! Thank you to Naomi & Chloe for all your help on the day.

Boys The year 6/7 boys participated in the SAPSASA basketball competition on Wednesday 1st August. The boys had a great day playing 6 games with 1 win and 1 draw. The boys participated and worked well as a team. Well done boys. Thank you to Daniel & Mitchell for the effort they put in with boys and thanks to Mitchell for umpiring.

Golf

Elliott and Shineah Goody played in the YP Junior Golf Open at Maitland golf club on Friday 6th July. Elliott won the day with 83 off the stick and Shineah came runner up for the girls with 106 off the stick.

Further to this success, Shineah will be going to Adelaide to compete in the SAPSASA Golf. Elliott was selected to a team of 5 players from the Yorke Peninsula to play in the Brett Ogle Cup at Port Augusta. The three day event involved players teeing off for best off the stick on day one, two games of match play on day two and a game of match play on day three. Young people under the age of 18 can enter the Junior Open and students from years 5 to 7 are eligible to try out for SAPSASA. It would be great to have more young people attend the Junior Open in 2019 and have a go.

Library News Premier’s Reading Challenge Reminder Not long to go until the Premier’s Reading Challenge is finished for 2018! Completed forms must be brought into the library before Friday Week 7 (September 7th)

Launch of new ‘Libraries SA’ app A new app for smart phones and tablets lets SA public library customers access their favourite services wherever they are. The Libraries SA app allows customers to search and place holds on physical books, DVDs and CDs as well as access digital content such as eBooks, digital magazines and online learning, all from their mobile device. Customers can also manage their loans and use the app as a virtual library card as the app is capable of displaying a customer’s name and barcode. There’s also very handy feature which lets you scan the barcode of any book, DVD or CD to see if you can borrow it

from your local library ‐ that’s a real money saver! The Libraries SA app is free and available for Apple and Android devices. To find it in the App Store or Google Play, search for ‘Libraries SA’. To find out more about the app, visit www.libraries.sa.gov.au/app YP Leisure Options Visit

On Wednesday of Week 3, the YP Leisure Options group visited the Yorketown School Community Library. We showed them around the library and explained what services we have to offer the community. Everyone really enjoyed the visit and we hope to see them again soon!
