ELEVATE at YorkHumberExperiential LEarningAnd Technology(ELEVATE) is a newprogram at York Humberwhich focusses on manycertifications such asCPR and First Aid,Working at Heights andWHIMIS training. Thesecertifications can lead toemploymentopportunities. As well,students will participatein a Dual Credit programwith Humber Collegewhere they earn a highschool credit as well asa college credit. Students are provided ahead start on learningand training for theirfuture careers.
York Humber has an outstanding educational program focussingon career, life and employability skills for students. Our goal is tohelp all of our students become responsible, respectful citizens,both in school and in the larger community. We offer studentsmany Experiential Learning opportunities including GreenIndustries, Food Services, Cosmetology, Auto Shop, and Carpentry. We have a growing Cooperative Educationdepartment where students can develop real world experiencesand skills towards graduation and many other courses designedto increase employability, literacy and numeracy skills. We offera wide variety of elective courses to capitalize on student interestas well as academics.
Experiential LearningProgram We believe that people learn bydoing – so we do a lot! Our focus atYork Humber is on ExperientialLearning where students use toolsand create, work in our community,practice their employment skills, andparticipate in CO-OP programs. Students in our Green Energies course have been installing andgrowing plants in our Hydroponic towers, greenroom andgardens. The Leadership class organizes a food drive for thecommunity. We offer an annual “Take Your Kids to Work" Dayfield trip for our Grade 9 students to explore real world jobopportunities and career possibilities.

Work Skills York Humber is dedicated to offering students choice andopportunity. Our Pathways include Work, Apprenticeship, Collegeand Community Living. Our careers Co-op preparatory course helpsto make students work-ready, and prepares them for our highlyvalued Co-op job placement program in their senior years of highschool.
Information TechnologyStudents at York Humber have assistive software and adaptiveequipment to help them develop their literacy and numeracy skills. These programs and learning aids can make printed words biggerand easier to read, and can even recognize students’ voices andtype what they dictate.
Community Supports York Humber’s staff continually works to create a caring, safe, and equitable school environment. We are partners with a number ofcommunity organizations including Griffin Centre, Toronto PublicHealth, Toronto Police Services, Community Living, Surrey Place,Food Share, Scarlett Woods Golf Course and Humber College.

Student Life - Where You Belong
AthleticsJoin one of our many sports teams, including badminton,basketball, volleyball, softball, cross-country and soccer. Ordevelop your strength and endurance in our newlyrefurbished, well-equipped weight room. You may also joinour many lunchtime intramural sports and free time gymactivities. Breakfast ClubHealthy eating makes for better learning. Our students canall start their morning with a variety of choices from ourBreakfast program which is open to all students everymorning from 8:15 am to 8:55 am. Volunteer to help at thebreakfast club and earn some of your community servicehours. We are a very caring school where all our students feelwelcome. Parents and students appreciate our uniform thathelps create a strong sense of belonging and ownershipwhich has helped to build school spirit and responsibility.

York Humber offers a very supportive environment that paysattention to your child individual needs. The school workswith the many outside agencies such as CommunityLiving and Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Programs to assistin the placement of students in apprenticeship programs. We offer you practical training support to jump start yourdream of a career in the skilled trades. We encourage manyfield trips and leadership opportunities for our students toexpand their understanding and abilities in preparation forlife after school. Our Developmental Disabilities program team works onpersonal independence, experiential learning, life skills aswell as literacy and numeracy skills. These classes are fullof students with great enthusiasm, personalities and energywho add a tremendous amount to the life and culture of ourschool.
Parent and Community Engagement
YHHS has a School Council which we encourage any interestedparent to join. Close ties are established with a variety of communityagencies to assist students requiring intervention to address theirsocio-emotional needs. These agencies include Food Share,Toronto Police, Public Health, Community Living, JamaicanCanadian Association, Costi, YES Youth Employment services, andFrontlines. A quarterly newsletter communicated at reporting periods informsthe York Humber community of school events, activities, SchoolCouncil updates and important school initiatives. Parent Interview Nights, held twice a year, provide opportunities forparents to meet and discuss their son's/daughter's progress withschool staff. As part of these nights we also run a Community Fairso that parents can access community supports and information toassist them with their children.
Imagine a TDSB where all schools share a common core set of characteristics. They arecommunity-driven and focused on teaching and learning. Students and parents have a wide variety ofopportunities and there are enough students in every school to increase program choices.
