Namaste,

International Women's Day is a collective day of global celebration. Throwing light on social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women, this day also marks the need for unity and action. Late Shrimati Sita Devi Yogendra and Pujya Maa, Smt. Hansaji Jayadeva Yogendra, of the legendary family of The Yoga Institute, have been torch bearers for women in the global Yoga fraternity.

Shrimati Sita Devi Yogendra, our Founder’s wife was the rst female yoga Guru, opening the path of yoga for women. Decades back, she strongly expressed her views that, “since Yoga claims to be a positive science, it is foregone conclusion that its various methods and exercises are undoubtedly equally useful to both man and woman. As such it makes no distinction between either caste, creed, nationality or, above all, between the two sexes. I have already observed that practical Yoga does not close its doors to women." Authored by her, Yoga Physical Education for Women, has been hailed the world over as the rst authoritative book on yoga for women written by a woman.

Leading on the path, Smt. Hansaji, wife of Dr. Jayadeva Yogendra and present Director of The Yoga Institute, has dedicated her life to the running of the Institute. Renowned as the First Lady of Yoga, she is the epitome of householder Yoga. She continues to empower all women, not just with talks but with action. She has been involved with women’s rescue programs for decades and is working tirelessly to provide free counseling, food, hygiene, and yoga education as well as free healthcare to thousands of women. Free yoga camps for women are organized every year to empower them with yoga education.

The Yoga way of life offers the pillar of stability and wings to grow. So, what better way to celebrate International Women’s Day than with a seminar to educate women to manage their nances and help them be self-reliant.

Wishing great success to every woman around the world and Happy Holi!

ur Indian culture is a very unique one. It believes in

Ocelebrating everything, no matter what the occasion is. Our celebrations start right from the moment we are

born. And then what? With little ups and downs, our lives are nothing but one big celebration.

We, Indians, are known for the way we celebrate our festivals, with such pompous and grandeur. All our festivals are inuenced and dependent on Nature. Be it the start of harvest time, or the transition of Sun from one phase to another, or be it the changes in the season. We are very much in sync with Nature.

And why shouldn’t we be inuenced by Nature? Take a look at it, it is beautiful. Nature has so many colors to offer. It comes in different forms, shapes, and sizes, and is infused with a variety of avors and fragrances. Every tree, plant, and ower is unique in its own ways. Every little part of Nature deserves a celebration of its own.

Holi is one such colorful festival. Inuenced by the plethora of colors found in Nature, Holi brings a refreshing spirit back into our lives. The color of this particular season is inuenced by the seasonal ower of ‘Kewda.’ These orange color owers dominate the Nature during this time. Holi is celebrated to bring back joy into our lives, by using the powdered form of colors. We throw colors, apply it to our loved ones, and have a gala time. All of this for what? To bring everyone together and spread joy!

We are very much inspired by the two great epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata. In which, Lord Krishna is seen celebrating the festival of colors with great splendor! There are colors, music, dance, and joy prevails all over.

However, is that the only outlook of festivals? No, each and every festival tries to send out a message to humanity. When it comes to Holi, the message is to appreciate that every color is beautiful, every human being is beautiful. Nature doesn’t discriminate. Nature sees beauty in everything, in everyone.

To appreciate the beauty around us, the expression of joy is the most heartfelt one. However, even to express joy, we need some action to back it up. The festival of colors is one such opportunity to express joy in the form of actions. In today’s day and age, where we are more attached to gadgets and machines rather than our friends and family, festivals become all the more important. Little moments where we get to be with our loved ones, meet them, feed them, spend some quality time, dance, enjoy, and express our love, is exactly what festivals are all about.

Colors denitely add joy, not only to the festival but also to our lives!

Happy Holi!

FROM THE TEACHER’S DIARY

Ruchi Gulati

Wishing you all a very happy new year.! Once again another calendar has changed and we have got some more time at hand, with more opportunities and will have many more experiences. May this year bring lots of good health ,happiness and may we all nd the purpose of our lives. Yes... Life's purpose...nding it may seem like a daunting task. Where do you begin? What steps do you take and how do you know that you are on the right path? We have always been told when you get good education you will get a decent job, when you get a decent job your life will be a blessing and you will never have to look back. A typical human brain always guesses that having a good house, a fancy car and other materialistic possessions means we are successful and our life needs nothing besides these.

With age and wisdom we learn a lot and realise life isn't a straight line. When asked about our life's purpose we start thinking about the achievements we have made thinking that to be our only purpose in life. Between the age of eighteen to twenty ve we have our entire life gured out. We have a path that will give us a roof over our head, put food in our stomach and ensure nancial stabilities. The rest of our life focuses on career success and nancial goals. Then one ne day we retire and we have the time to do whatever we want. This is the rational belief. What is our life's purpose then?

Being a successful designer when I had to make shifts in my career due to commitments at home it was unfathomable to the loves ones around me. This was because what I chose wasn't rational for them. My path was different.

When I started on the path of yoga, embracing it in 2012, I had no clue about the future and the way it would shape up my life. My guru Hansaji guided me from one step to another and miracles just began to happen. How to live a meaningful life or would my life have a purpose, these questions would haunt me yet I followed my guru and conscience and moved on. My guru once told me when u do anything that you love, you will give your 100% and it will give you immense sense of fullment. When I focused on doing the thing I loved the most ...The practice of Yoga ...I started living a life of contentment & I started literally living Yoga, on and off the mat both. Whenever I would falter, there would be my inner conscious guiding me to rectify and again move on.

I would breathe, eat, drink, sleep, think, digest and feel only

Yoga. I realised that the world of Yoga was far more deeper than I thought and I started learning something new almost every single day of my life. It made me realise that there’s no end to learning and we are learner’s till we reside on this earth. It made my life more meaningful and I realised my purpose. Hoping that all of you too realise your purpose some day.

This 2020 let's focus on the new and shedding the old. Let's make a difference in our life and set an example for others. Let's make it more meaningful, enriching and worthwhile.

Regular and consistent efforts at these will surely bring a smile to your face when you will look back at 2020.

• Do what you love ... Love what you do.. Whether it's your career or anything at hand, when you absolutely love what you do, it's reected in the outcome.

• Focus on your strengths instead of brooding on your weaknesses. You rather see what you have and strengthen it than what you don't and mull over it.

• Show an act of kindness and laugh heartily every single day.

• Connect with people but not on phones.

• Set your goals, short term, mid term, long term for a more organised life.

• Exercise daily, eat healthy, have a good sleep and practice mindfullness.

• Practice letting go - physical, mental and emotional.

• Don't feed anger, greed, pride, jealousy, attachment and lust. It just responds to your feed. If you stop feeding it, it slowly starves and leaves your body and mind.

• Contemplate daily, it helps you become a better human being.

• Have an attitude of gratitude for everything that you do.

Some Sociological Aspects of Yoga

In one of the Upanishads, it is stated that man is all mind and desire, and he gets a body harmonious with his mental equipment. It is an age-old adage that there is a sound mind in a sound body. I believe what Yoga does is to develop a proper system of discipline so as to actualize the potential in the human body. If the object of Yoga is to give us health of mind and body, it is closely related to self-development. Sociology tries to study human behavior in all its geo, bio, social relationships, which lead to institutional development.

The use of sociology is very signicant for helpful, purposeful planning. Because a study of sociology will equip us with what are called social laws or historical hints, so that we may proceed on that basis to build a very healthy pattern of society. I believe there are three functions of Yoga that are signicant for all of us, whether we are sociologists, economists or educationists.

The rst, through a sort of discipline, builds an immunity or resistance in every individual. There may be diseases or ailments, mental and physical, but if we practice Yoga, we build a resistance in the body, and we are not prone or liable easily to catch the disease. That is my view of a Yogin.

The second one is the curative aspect. It is claimed and it has also been demonstrated by several speakers that Yoga is capable of curing various types of diseases, both physical and mental. I have no doubt that it is capable of curing disease, because it establishes a new type of harmony. Perhaps it re-

creates the cells, vitalizes or rejuvenates the individual. I have profound belief that Yoga, as a curative science, has immense possibilities. I believe that this has been amply demonstrated in this Institute. There is no disease that Yoga cannot cure. So, these two preventive and curative functions of Yoga alone should entitle it to great regard.

Yoga has to be taken from childhood, developed through youth, brought to perfection in old age and then only it is capable of conferring all the benets.

Graded Yoga will do everything for the total society. That is the contribution of Yoga to sociology and to the society. I consider that if we think of Yoga along these lines, it opens up vast and exciting possibilities for us.

TRANSFORMATION THROUGH YOGA

Sometimes, we learn life’s lessons without even putting them into words. Until one day, we come across a philosophy that puts everything into perspective. This is what happened to Sandra Bhatia, currently a student of the 7 Months Teacher Training Course at The Yoga Institute.

Sandra had been suffering from various illnesses for many years - a stressful home situation caused her to develop ulcerative colitis, which affected her colon and caused many painful ulcers, for which she took medications, strong steroids. In fact, the doctors had told her “there is no cure,” given that her condition was chronic. As a result, she became very sensitive to food and experienced weight loss, which made it difcult for her to perform her duties as a wife and mother of two energetic young children.

She tried homeopathy and allopathy together for some time, which improved her condition a little bit. However, after six years, she was diagnosed with a second autoimmune disease, which often follows, inammatory arthritis. This meant more steroids, which Sandra was truly sick of by now.

Desperate, she was ready to try anything by now and one day, at the recommendation of a friend, she tried reiki as an alternative. “The rst experience was tremendous,” recalls Sandra who went through a strong emotional release. “Reiki is an intelligent energy,” explained her reiki practitioners, adding that it would provide energy to areas where it was needed.

In Sandra’s case, it meant the assurance that everything would

be all right, that her problems were manageable. “I was feeling different from the inside,” she recalls. “Lighter, brighter. Like my old self, without worries.” That’s when she realised that she had “lost herself” and was slowly coming back to her old self. In just a month, her physical symptoms also improved.

Sandra then did a reiki course but had problems integrating the required practice into her every day routine. One day, she dedicated her practice to her late parents on their wedding anniversary and was through this experience that she had the thought to nally stop her medications. She did and has not looked back since. “Sometimes, there would be pain but then I’d do reiki,” she remembers.

In September 2018, Sandra joined the 21-Day Better Living Course at The Yoga Institute, which was her rst exposure to Yoga. Her husband soon joined the 3 Months Teacher Training Course and urged her to also experience this deeper study of Yoga, which she did in August 2019. Through the advanced course, Sandra understood that her illnesses were caused by stress. “Yoga put everything into perspective,” she says. This is where her spiritual journey started.

Now, close to nishing, Sandra has reaped the benets of Yoga rst-hand. The same stressful situations that would cause tension and despair at home, now bring her and her husband closer. They both have learned to see the positive in every situation and to put their health rst. “Now, it is normal, we don’t get stressed. We do meditation together on a daily basis and our journey is parallel again,” says a happy Sandra who hopes to teach eventually.

he chairman of the leading PR company, Adfactors, Shri

TMadan Bahalji conveyed his best wishes to The Yoga Institute: I am grateful that Yoga education for BMC

school students is doing great and it has spread to 60 different schools, educating more than 10,000 students.

I wish that such type of Yoga education reaches every child in India. I would humbly appeal to The Yoga Institute to take up the task and provide 10,000 yoga teachers to the nation for the betterment of the future of every child.

The BMC school students belong to the vulnerable section of the society where they are exposed to many ill-happenings. It is difcult for many of us to understand the psychology and mental health of the children. I salute the Yoga teachers of the Institute

and also the teachers as well as the principals of the BMC schools in handling such a hugely affected section of children.

It is not only the plight of these children but the current situation in the nation where disruption and uncertainty in the society has increased that makes the weaker sections of society even more vulnerable and thus children's life becomes difcult. It is only through the education of Yoga in the schools at an early age that will make them stronger individuals.

As I speak on behalf of the Adfactors company, we strongly feel about this vulnerable class of children and that is why it is our primary CSR activity. This brought me in touch with The Yoga Institute and I cannot thank Hansaji and Dr. Jayadeva more who lifted me from being ignorant to being more useful to the society.

23 YOGASATTVA

By Sita Devi Yogendra

For maintaining the day-to-day health of women, there is more in Yoga than meets the

eye. Scientic Yoga has a cultural section for physical discipline involving hygiene, preventive measures and therapeut ics . Women’s hea l th , as women themselves, has been neglected so long that if we continue to neglect it still further the consequences to the individual and the nation are bound to show themselves very badly sooner than later. I make this statement because there seems to be a general growing impression among the leisured section of women-folk in cities and elsewhere that their rst duty should be to the less fortunate members of the society. But what example of physical well being are these leaders to take to the suffering when they themselves suffer from poor health?

I make therefore an earnest plea that those who intend taking up and a r e a c t u a l l y e n g a g e d i n humanitarian work build up a sound system themselves. This will not merely serve as an example to others, but also lighten the burden so far as the work itself is concerned. To take good cheer to hearts with no cheer, requires an abundance of it in those who determine to carry it on. Now, good cheer means self-condence and a reserve of vitality, and vitality comes only from good health both physical and mental strength of character is also a source of vitality-strength of even a moderate degree requires moral and spiritual stamina. Lack of such strength means lack of purpose, lack of essentials for success, and hence the need to build up strength.

FOOD

The right thing to begin with is the body. Besides Yogic postural training, food deserves equal attention. Food-the right type of food-is a source of vitality which no woman should overlook In her craze to look slim and sylphlike. It too often occurs that more women than is ordinarily believed, deny themselves enough

food in the false hope that this will lead to the reduction in the size of their gure. This assumption is so prevalent that girls even from their earliest teens begin to discard solid and sustaining food and take to liquid diet. The consequence is that the pe lv ic deve lopment the mainstay of women’s health and strength is arrested. And though the girls may grow normally in other respects, the size and strength of the pelvic organs remain like that of an immature girl.

Apart from the loss of proportion which an i l l-developed gure fosters, there is also the added risk to health due to impaired function of the ovaries. Moreover, it is a scientically established fact that it is on the proper working of the ovaries that not merely the health but also the charm of women as women depends. The same course of action would therefore be to eat the right type of foods in the right quantit ies and rely upon the inuence of rational exercising to keep in check any tendency of the gure to outgrow the limits of

fashion. Here it is that the Yogic physical education comes to the fair sex in an admirable way. The initial postural training requires no accessories , not much of personal guidance, less of muscular exertion and the least of violence through frequent repetition. The physiological benets of such training and postures have been fully investigated at the Yoga Institute with the aid of scientic research data during laboratory work.

Constitutionally, women are little more subject to the cure of constipation than men because of structural differences. But this can be easily overcome by adopting certain dynamic postures which take good care of the mid trunk. Add to these movements a few static postures like Halasana, Parvatasana or Trikonasana which inuence the pelvic region, spine and the posterior muscles by alternate activity and rest, and you ensure perfect health.

YOGIC INSIGHTS

WHEN we carry out an action our approach also gains importance. What was our motive behind the action? Our approach, attitude, faith, and in fact our whole personality can be thought of in three different ways. It can be pure and spiritual or may be worldly or even subnormal and perverted. It is only when right type of actions are carried out in the right spirit that one is assured of success.

Talking about faith, for example, it can be said that faith is the very foundation for all human endeavours. A man is what his faith is. Faith of course is a product of earlier impressions. It is said that one’s whole personality is reected in the type of faith one cultivates. If you have a faith in a higher life, your actions are measured by such a faith. But if you do not have faith in a higher life, then it is sure your actions stem from low beliefs. In fact, it can also happen that one even descends lower down and believes in ghosts and goblins.

Various ingredients that go to make up an action, including faith, fortitude, good habits, ritual acts etc. all can be measured on the scale of threefold nature of guṇas. Individual personalities, physical body, food and every material object that springs from prakṛti is classiable in this fashion. We may take the example of food. Such food as contributes to longevity and favourably contributes to personality development, health and happiness is considered to be sāttvika food. This type of food is tasty, pleasant to eat, non-deteriorating with passing of time etc. Rājasika food is sour or saltish, hot and pungent. Such food leads to tensions and ill health. Tāmasika food is tasteless and stale.

The sāttvika attitude is the desirable attitude and this approach results from self-abnegation and faith in a higher reality. To quote examples of such sāttvika types of activities we may consider the case of obligatory religious ceremonies, acts of

piety etc. done simply because they have to be done without any consideration of the result. Contrasted with them will be actions of similar type done with premeditated desire for results

Sāttvika fortitude on the physical level consists of non-violence, control of sex life, humility, purity etc. Such forbearance is also found in sāttvika speech which does not cause agitation of mind, is truthful, helpful and pleasant. We may also speak of a mental tapa which is sāttvika when it leads to purity of intention, self-control, science, and mental tranquillity. The point is that tapa either physical, verbal, or mental becomes pure when coupled with faith and desire-lessness. Otherwise rajasika fortitude could be sheer mortication of the esh for gaining fame or it could be tāmasika when it is specially directed to hurting others.

The point seems to be that our faith and actions revealing themselves in various aspects of life can be classed as the highest when wedded to belief in a higher reality and when carried out with sense if dedications to that reality. Gifts for example, can be made in a sattvika frame of mind when one gives away because one feels it absolutely proper to make the gift, even to one who has done no good to the giver.

It is thus that the three words “Om Tat Sat” representing the highest Brahman manifested in scriptures, vedic rituals, and spiritual acts have again to be uttered when a seeker carries out regular activities of every day life. It is this approach that is commended. Om represents Brahman, and so too the word tat represents Brahman through spiritual and secular acts. Sat again representing the highest, is a means of concentrating on the Brahman. In a way utterance of the three words at the start of all acts, pits the real spiritual seekers in the right frame of mind. Only with the right approach and the sattvika type of acts can gain the highest.

TESTIMONIAL

It is heartening to know that The Yoga Institute, Santacruz, Mumbai celebrated it’s Centenary and released a souvenir to mark this occasion. Yoga means the union of the mind, body and spirit with the divine and while this refers to a certain state of consciousness both individual and universal, it is also a method to help one reach that goal. I am sure that this celebration has inspired people within the country and across the world to practice Yoga as a permanent, everyday way of life. Heartiest congratulations and best wishes.

My quest as much as of any human being is to attain peace within and live life with mindfulness; health and happiness. My mentors Hansaji and Dr. Saheb helped me achieve it to the fullest. My personality as of now is positive, calm, content and condent. Just the opposite of what I was before. The welcoming vibrations of the institute magnetize us to come here daily. I feel I would have ended the journey of my life incomplete without the lovely knowledge of yoga bestowed to me from the oldest institute “The Yoga Institute”. Purity of mind as well as soul is achieved only here.

TESTIMONIAL

I really enjoyed lectures every day at the 7 -Day Health camp. I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at the age of 18 and was very ill for years, including severe depression. I didn't leave the same person and, as I said at the end of camp, I experienced tremendous grace, a renewed sense of God, purpose and love. My job is demanding and I work long hours in manual labor in New York City. Incorporating aspects of duty and gratitude have helped me incredibly. The reective time in a nurturing, healthy environment helped remind me of who to be, to slow down and see the beauty of every moment. Mindfulness and kindness are things that I am focusing on in my life. The staff, volunteers, chef and food were incredible. The interaction with the doctor and the therapist were incredibly helpful because they took genuine interest in my well-being and I have actually followed through with their advice. I cannot remember the last time I experienced so much love. I am forwarding the program to my HR department.

I came to The Yoga Institute in 2018 Dec when I was completely devastated and crushed in my personal and professional life. I just came here thinking Yoga will help me make some changes in my lifestyle. Little did I know that walking in through that little gate of TYI will change, not just my lifestyle but my whole life.

I enrolled for the 7 month TTC program which is a very wholesome program, giving you an extremely in-depth knowledge of both practical and philosophical

aspects of the classical Ashtanga Yoga. Every single day was incredibly inspiring and invigorating. The Yoga Institute has the most amazing teachers and instructors who are themselves so contagiously passionate about Yoga.

The Yoga Institute gave me a new lease of life and new purpose to live, learn and share my experiences with the world about this wonderful discipline called

Yoga. The Yoga Institute, taught me… “In, is the only way out.”

I feel deep gratitude towards our Yoga Institute for making Yoga a possibility for me in my current stage in life. Yoga, by working on the psychological and physiological realms of my being, has brought about a greater perspective to practical daily living. The often repeated simple prayer "Humey Apney Mann Ko...." in its own beautiful way continues to silently guide me from within in varying circumstances. The ancient wisdom of living right being disseminated via excellently trained and experienced teachers, especially our evening batch teacher Ms Vaishali, who have consistently persevered to offer us the rened form of Yoga - Asanas, Pranayama, Sutras. The monthly Full Moon Meditation provides the mystical reward for the experiential adventurer in me. Ever grateful to our Institute head, revered Hansaji for preaching the Yogic way of life in the purest, simplest and an affordable manner possible in modern times, and to Mani Sir & Mamta Madam for making daily classes appear a seamless event.

FOUNDER, SHRI YOGENDRAJI

YOGASATTVAMONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF THE YOGA INSTITUTE, INDIAOLDEST ORGANISED YOGA CENTRE IN THE WORLD

MARCH 2020 ISSUE

“Spirituality is the nal product,

while religion is merely a means.”

Shri Yogendraji - Father of Modern Yoga Renaissance

The world does not approve of a theory which has never been experienced. The scientic world requires demonstration and the theory which fails to do so is considered as a fraud. There is nothing like a miracle.

With many years of secrecy and on account of historical and social environment, various concepts recorded and perceived in old scriptures may not appear valid in present situation. It then an objective consideration has to be given to certain claims. As a recent commentator on the yoga philosophy claries “ When one proof is realised, however little it may be, it will give us faith in the whole teachings of yoga. “

Let us be careful not to throw the baby out with the bathtub water. I have noticed a peculiar kind of misinterpretation of the spirit of yoga philosophy in the recent world of some writers who have no experience to back up and have relied only on different books on this Subject. Even I dare not say that I have done full justice in this little book by epitomising the vast literature of yoga philosophy. It is for this reason that I have not touched the complicated philosophies of Jnana, Bhakti and Karma yoga, but have restricted myself to only the practical side for which I have the actual experience with guidance of my teacher Paramhansa Madhavadasaji.
