On Health | by Jane Shure, PhD, LCSW

Do you ever leave a conversation criticizing your-self for having sounded stupid? Do you tend tofeel guilty for things you know are not really your

fault? Do you sometimes feel too embarrassed to go to meet-ings or parties? Do you secretly believe that you have a fatalflaw that will prevent you from having the life you want?

If you answer yes to these questions you may be experiencingshame.

WHAT IS SHAME?Shame is a mighty force. It is that feeling of being inherentlyflawed, damaged and defective; it keeps us prisoners of self-doubt, dampens our spontaneity, and drains our life energy. Ithas many faces with different voices, but they all say that whatwe present to the world is a lie, that we are a fraud, that wewon’t amount to much, and that we should keep ourselves hid-den. Shame can be like a virus that we carry under our skin, dor-mant some times and activated when our stress levels are high.

WHERE DOES SHAME COME FROM?Shame comes from several sources. In the normal course ofdevelopment children experience shame. Learning to walk, read, write, and reach other developmental milestones, requires trials and errors. How parents respond to these chal-lenges can minimize shame or increase its power. Any form ofdifference that sets us apart from the mainstream (physical dis-ability, sexual orientation, adoption, to name a few) may alsocause feelings of shame. In addition, our culture induces shameby selling us images of how we should be richer, thinner, younger, and, in general, different from how we are naturally.

HOW DOES SHAME APPEAR?Shame has a physical form. It manifests in blushing, sweating, dry mouth, a lowered gaze, sweating palms, collapsingshoulders, nausea and a racingheart. Shame appears in thevoice of an internal judge criti-cizing everything we do. Itcauses us to feel like animposter telling us that, nomatter how accomplished wemay be, we are just foolingothers. Shame is also woveninto self-destructive actions likedrug and alcohol abuse, eatingdisorders, cutting, harmfulrelationships, or sabotagingoneself in the workplace.

While shame is a powerfulforce, it can be managed andits impact diminished. Here are

The Power ofShamesome ideas to guide you on your journey to minimize thepower of shame in your life.

TIPS FOR REDUCING SHAME1) Know that you are not the only one. Many people struggle

to be free of shame. It’s a hard process, but with patienceyou can diminish shame’s force and be free of its oppres-sion.

2) Awareness is the first step in any change process. Get goodat identifying the feeling of shame and notice when itappears.

3) Compassion is the antidote to shame. Work on developingand practicing a compassionate voice that is non-judgmen-tal, understands you and your story, and can be kind andencouraging. This voice allows you to be human with allthe quirks and wounds and imperfections that make ushuman.

4) Explore the origins of your shame. Was it from a critical fam-ily? Something that had you feel different than others like alearning disability? Understand how messages from youryounger years got internalized. These are the messages thatyour compassionate new voice needs to counteract.

5) Notice how current behaviors may reinforce your shame.Do you do self-destructive things that shame you? Do youthen say to yourself, “See, that proves I’m worthless.”? Planhow you can begin to give up these behaviors and replacethem with more self- supportive ones.

6) Become a good self coach. Learn to focus on your attrib-utes. You can learn to identify with your strengths, gifts andtalents. You are larger than the wounds you carry.

7) Surround yourself with people who treat you well and stayaway from people who cause you to feel bad about your-

self.

8) Find someone who feels safe to tell aboutyour reading this newsletter and share yourstruggle with shame. When we talk to peo-ple we trust rather than keep ourselves quietand separate, we begin to heal.

9) Seek professional help with qualifiedproviders who can help you move throughthese steps and gui de you through the diffi-cult process of letting go of shame.

10) Educate yourself about shame. Here aresome books we recommend:Healing the Shame that Binds You: JohnBradshaw Letting Go of Shame: Ronald and PatriciaPotter Efron Facing Shame: Families in Recovery: MerleFossom and Marilyn Mason ▲

YOGA LIVING September/October 2008 47

The first cool days of fall are as welcomein my heart as the first warm springbreeze is. After spending the hot months of

August avoiding turning on my oven at all costs, I am excit-

ed to get back in the kitchen to roast, caramelize, make thick

rich stocks, and find new ways to enjoy the vegetables we

will harvest from the backyard. The anticipation of seeing

the Farmers’ Market overflowing with fall’s bounty brings

about a sort of content knowing: lettuces and other greens

such as collards, mustard, turnip, and spinach; root vegeta-

bles; pears, grapes, plums, and an astonishing variety of

apples; kohl crops such as broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and

brussels sprouts; and pumpkins, gourds, and hard shell

squashes will all be at their absolute peak.

The foods and flavors of autumn are as welcome as the cool-

er temperatures. Pulling sweaters and jeans out of the closet

reminds me that a steaming bowl of soup is suddenly more

appealing than a salad. An apple satisfies me better than a

cold slice of pineapple or melon. Fall vegetables bring to mind

the warmth of the hearth, where a sense of coziness reigns.

With that warm feeling, I am reminded of the forthcoming

display of beautiful autumn colors and the enjoyment of

heartier food.

Let’s get started with a delectable butternut squash risotto,

one of fall’s quintessential comfort foods. It makes an excel-

lent vegetarian main course or main meal topped with grilled

or sautéed fish. Side dish and first course lovers will also

appreciate the versatility of this recipe.

ROASTED BUTTERNUT SQUASH RISOTTOServes 4 as a main course, 8-10 as a side dish.

1 large butternut squash (approximately 2 lbs), peeled,

seeded, chopped into 1/2” chunks

4 tbsp olive oil

6 cups vegetable or chicken stock

3 large leeks (white & pale green parts only), thinly sliced

2 cups arborio rice

1/2 cup dry white wine

1/2 cup whipping cream

Falling Into Fall Foods

1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese

2 tbsp chopped fresh sage

Preheat oven to 400˚F. Place squash on large-rimmed baking

sheet. Drizzle with 2 tablespoons oil and sprinkle with salt

and pepper; toss to coat. Roast until tender and beginning to

brown, stirring occasionally, about 40 minutes.

Bring stock to simmer in heavy large saucepan. Reduce heat

to very low; cover and keep stock warm. Heat 2 tablespoons

oil in another heavy large saucepan over medium-low heat.

Add leeks and sauté until soft but not brown, about 10 min-

utes. Add rice; stir 1 minute. Add wine and simmer until

absorbed, stirring constantly, about 2 minutes. Add 1/2 cup

hot stock; simmer until absorbed, stirring frequently. Add

remaining stock 1/2 cup at a time, allowing stock to be

absorbed before adding more and stirring frequently, until

rice is tender and mixture is creamy, about 25 minutes

longer. Add roasted squash, cream, Parmesan cheese and

sage; stir until heated through. Season to taste with salt and

pepper. Serve warm.

ROASTED ROOT VEGETABLES Serves 6-8 (as a side dish).

2 pounds root vegetables peeled and cut into 1-inch pieces

(use any combination of sweet or new potatoes, carrots,

parsnips, turnips, rutabagas, beets, fall/winter squash,

celery root)

1 medium onion, peeled and cut into 1/3-inch wedges

(or a handful of pearl onions)

1 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil

Salt to taste

1 head garlic, separated into cloves and peeled

Chopped fresh herbs like rosemary, thyme or sage

Drizzle of balsamic vinegar (optional)

Heat oven to 400˚F. Place the root vegetables and onionsinto a large roasting pan. Toss the vegetables with the oliveoil and salt to taste. Do not crowd the vegetables. Roast themixture for a total of 45-50 minutes, stirring every 15 min-utes. After 30 minutes, scatter the garlic cloves in with thevegetables. Continue stirring every 15 minutes until the veg-etables are tender and lightly caramelized (brown). Beforeserving, add a sprinkling of fresh chopped herbs or balsamicvinegar, for additional flavor.

Recipes

FRESH APPLESAUCEYields about 5 cups.

Sure you could just buy it at the store, but homemade apple-

sauce is one of the all-time greatest treats.

5 pounds apples (You can use all a single variety of apples or

an assortment, just make sure they are fresh and flavorful.)

3 cups water

2 tsp cinnamon

1 tsp nutmeg

2 tbsp honey

Wash, quarter, and core the apples, then place in pot with

water and spices. Bring to a boil, lower heat, and simmer,

stirring frequently, for 1-1/2 hours (until the apples are soft).

Add honey to taste and adjust seasonings. If you would like

to remove the skins, place some of the applesauce in colan-

der or vegetable mill and push through. Serve warm or cold.

GLAZED BRUSSEL SPROUTS Serves 4.

1 pound Brussel sprouts

1 tbsp unsalted butter

1/4 cup dry red wine

1/4 cup water

1 tbsp honey

1 tbsp soy sauce

1 tsp cornstarch (if needed to thicken glaze)

Wash the Brussels sprouts, removing any tough outer leaves.

Trim off the root end, then with the tip of a knife, cut an X

into the root (this helps the inner core cook more quickly

without overcooking the outer leaves). In a medium

saucepan over medium heat, combine the butter, wine,

water, honey and soy sauce and the brussels sprouts and stir

well. Cover and let simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasion-

ally, then uncover and cook for another 5-10 minutes. If

needed, add the cornstarch to thicken the liquid.

MIXED VEGETABLE CURRYServes 4.

1 cup Paneer, cubed

2 cups mixed vegetables (choose what is fresh & on hand)

1 cup potatoes, diced

1 medium-sized onion, thinly sliced

1 large tomato, roughly chopped

2-3 green chilles, finely chopped

1 tsp ginger-garlic paste

2 tbsp plain yoghurt

Salt (to taste)

1/2 tsp red chilli powder

1 tsp coriander powder

1/2 tsp cumin powder

1/4 tsp turmeric powder

1 tsp cumin seeds

2 tbsp light cooking oil

Water (as needed)

2 tbsp fresh coriander leaves, finely chopped for garnish

Heat oil in a large pot and add cumin seeds, allowing it to siz-

zle. Add onions and fry till it begins to turn pink. Add toma-

toes and ginger-garlic paste and cook for a few minutes till it

begins to pulp. Add potatoes, salt, red chilli powder, corian-

der powder, cumin powder and turmeric powder, and stir to

coat well. Cover and cook for 3-4 minutes. Mix in yoghurt

and stir till spices blend well. Add paneer, mixed vegetables

and a cup of water. Cover cook for 8-10 minutes till potatoes

turn tender, stirring occasionally. Feel free to add more water

if desired. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve

warm over rice.

FRESH TOMATO SOUP (Mexican Style)Serves 4.

September sometime brings and abundance of sometimes

over-ripe tomatoes from the garden. This recipe is nice way

to use them up. Freeze it in batches for a taste summer come

mid-winter!

2 tbsp olive oil

1 medium red onion, coarsely chopped

2 cloves garlic, chopped

1 cup dry white wine

8 overly ripe beef steak tomatoes, seeded & coarsely

chopped

Water

1/4 tsp cayenne pepper

Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Chopped cilantro

1 avocado (diced)

Grated white cheddar cheese

Corn tortilla chips

Heat oil in a medium sauce pan over high heat. Add onions

and cook until soft, add the garlic and cook for 30 seconds.

Add the wine and cook until reduced by half. Add the toma-

toes and enough water to cover the tomatoes by 1-inch.

Bring to a boil, lower heat to medium and simmer until toma-

toes are very soft and start to break down, approximately 30

minutes. Carefully transfer the mixture to a food processor

and process (in batches if needed) until smooth. Return to

the saucepan, season with cayenne, salt and pepper and

cook for 5 minutes. Ladle into bowls and garnish with

cheese, diced avocado, cilantro and some broken tortilla

chips. ▲

54 YOGA LIVING September/October 2008

BEING GREEN HAS BEEN A BUZZ TERM FORMANY YEARS. It mostly refers to an alternative wayof thinking about our lifestyle choices, what kind of

resources we use and how we use them. To live life in sim-ple and rewarding ways: buying vegetables from a localfarmer instead of having them shipped from a far awayplace, creating wind in the house by simply opening thewindows, living with the rhythm of the outdoors andtherefore diminishing the need for electricity. Thanks topast Vice President, Al Gore, we have become even moreaware of the impact our choices have on this earth and onthe necessity to adjust our lifestyles if we want to ensurethe health of this planet and keep enjoying its beauty.

GREEN AT ITS BESTA green business or person aligns “its practices for the useof renewable resources and holds itself accountable for theenvironmental and human-rights impacts of its activities.”Not only do they use renewable resources that are biodegradableor compostable and organically grown, but they also take intoaccount how their use of those resources affects people, animalsand the environment. Many books and articles have been writtenon this subject and an increasing number of green TV channels aredevoted to this topic.

Another way to look at it is that ‘green’ refers to people or busi-nesses that have a positive environmental attribute or objective. Itsimply means going back to a more natural and rewarding lifestyle. One which does not take anything for granted simply there is ofplenty of it right now. One which considers everything that wehave as precious and to be grateful for.

A WARM & FUZZY FEELINGPeople who are living this type of lifestyle, whether they are begin-ners or long time adherents, find that their life has become so muchmore meaningful. They talk about how ‘warm and fuzzy’ they feeland about their conviction that they are ‘doing the right thing’.They also observe that their green investments have paid off, andmade their life more rewarding and less expensive. Above all theyperceive that quality is seeping back into their lifestyle, an accom-plishment that they are proud about and gladly share it with others.

CHANGING COLORS SLOWLYBeing green can start out by adjusting our attitude through smalland incremental steps. Be grateful for everything we have and treatit as such. Move away from the throw away, quick fix society thatwe have become. Look at how the previous generations lived green:take your own bag to the grocery store, turn off the lights when notneeded, turn off the faucet in the bathroom while you brush yourteeth, offer to carpool whenever you can, enjoy healthy and bal-anced home-made meals, give your kids one book bag or set ofcrayons and teach them to respect them so that they can enjoythem for a long time. The list is endless. This is how we can bringsustainability into our lives.

A SUSTAINABLE LIFESTYLESustainability refers to these practices that help to ensure the con-tinued viability of a product or practice well into the future. It is away for us to make a difference to improve our quality of life andwith it the life of your fellow man, and ultimately, mother earth. Itis a lifestyle choice to ensure that future generations can continueto enjoy our planet and the same, if not better, quality of life.

WE ARE ALL ONE!Many organizations contribute to an all round healthy and greenlifestyle. One of them is People 4 Earth, www.people-4-earth.org, aglobal non profit lifestyle organization that helps you look at sus-tainability in an easy and comprehensive way so that you can makebetter, sustainable, choices.

Three core principles are at the heart of People 4 Earth’s philosophy:

• Purity: verifying how healthy and safe a product is, whichadditives it has, how pure it is. In short: how far is the ketchupremoved from the tomato?

• Fairness: were the people making this product treated fairlyin the process? Did the farmer get more than 7% of the pricethat you are paying?

• Ecology: did the Earth get respected in making this product? Is the product or its packaging recyclable?

The Pure-Fair-Eco seal addresses all these issuesand is going on all types of products from chipsto baby food to water to services.

So let’s buy and live consciously. Take respon-sibility for our individual actions and choicesand understand how they impact the many layersof society. We can make a difference! With a little bit ofattention and a lot of heart it is easy being green! ▲

“Non-violence leads to the highest ethics, which is the goal of all evolution.

Until we stop harming all other living beings, we are still savages.”

-Thomas A. Edison

NON-VIOLENT PET BUYING& ANIMAL RESCUES

UNTIL ONE MONTH AGO I WAS COMPLETELY IGNORANT ABOUT THE PAIN ANDSUFFERING CAUSED TO THOUSANDS OF INNOCENT ANIMALS EVERY DAY INPUPPY MILLS. As an animal lover and mom of three dogs, I was real-

ly in the dark. I had always gotten animals from shelters in the past, butI have to admit that I was sucked in by the instant appeal of the pet store.I got my third dog, Frankie, from a pet store and even as an animal loverit never occurred to me the origin of this puppy or the potential abuse thatI was perpetuating through my purchase. All I knew was that it was loveat first sight and impulsive buying was at work.

As I researched for a service project that I am spearheading, I learned thatmany pet shops are the storefronts for unregulated puppy mills. In fact, some puppy mills are located just miles from us in Lancaster County, PA.I was shocked to learn that Lancaster has one of the highest concentra-tions of puppy mills of any county in the USA. Puppy mills are notoriousfor overcrowding breeding dogs in small spaces (sometimes the size of adishwasher!) with wire flooring that are exposed to the elements. Thefemale dogs begin to breed at seven months and are forced to producemany litters throughout their lifetime after which they are euthanized. Some of these dogs are never allowed outside. The puppies are thentaken away too early and shipped off in trucks. These puppies areexposed to disease, overcrowding and trucks with no temperature controland can ultimately end up in our local pet shops.

Fortunately, many animal rights activists and political supporters suchas Gov. Ed Rendell have been pushing legislation to begin effective reg-ulation of puppy mills. The House Bill 2525 would regulate the size ofcages, cage floor material, weather exposure, adequate access to theoutside, prohibit stacking of cages and deny licenses to those convict-ed of animal abuse. The bill also increases penalties for offenders. Tosupport this legislation, go to www.legis.state.pa.us/index.cfm to findthe address of your local representative. Write to them and expressyour views on the bill and your willingness to vote against politiciansthat do not support it. Another important bill that is being reviewed isbill 2532. This bill, among other regulations, would not allow puppymills to “de-bark” dogs. This involves cutting the dogs vocal chords sothat it cannot bark.

There are some simple ways to know whether a puppy was brought froma puppy mill. Puppy mills typically breed more than one type of dog. Bevery cautious when buying puppies from a 717 area code or over theInternet. Resist buying puppies from pet stores. The majority of reputablebreeders do not sell their puppies this way! Even if papers are provided, the information comes from registries with very little regulations.

To be sure you are not part of this cycle; always adopt your animalsfrom rescues. There is a wonderful animal rescue in our area, calledthe Main Line Animal Rescue. This rescue has a non-kill policy and a

98% adoption rate.Founded by BillSmith and run by adedicated staffincluding 200 vol-unteers, MLAR is aplace of love andpeace. It is locatedon an old farmwhere there is a his-toric barn and largefenced in fields andwalking paths. Thekennel is clean andorganized with manyfriendly faces walk-ing through check-ing on all of the ani-mals. Each animalhas a name and islabeled on the front of the cage by temperament and likes and dislikes.Volunteers are invited to walk, play, hold and love the dogs, cats andbunnies that reside at MLAR.

You can help stop this animal cruelty. If you are considering buying an ani-mal, think about adopting one instead. You can also donate your time orresources by helping to raise awareness and funds to support the manydedicated volunteers at a your local animal rescue. We all have some-thing unique to offer. I am a Yoga teacher, so I decided to donate the prof-its from one class a month to MLAR. In addition, I have also designedwhat I am calling the “Ahimsa Necklace” with all profits from its sale alsogoing to MLAR. I encourage you to use your unique talents and abilitiesto further the fair and equitable treatment of animals. ▲
