lorem ipsum dolor met set quam nunc parum Message from the Academy Principal, Mr Gilbert Dear Parents and Carers, Welcome to this March Newsletter. I write this introduction to this Newsletter on World Book Day. We hope that this day does provide the inspiration for all children to read. Reading is such an important life skill, whether it be a novel, article, or information on various devices available to the youth of today. We have encouraged all children to actively participate in reading for its own sake during this week, and I hope they have found something interesting and worthwhile to encourage them to widen their reading. The weather this term has been extremely interesting. With the persistent rain and winds that we have experienced we are very fortunate that the site has held up considerably well during this period, as the first spell of bad weather was always going to be a real test of the new building and associated landscaping. However, now that we hope to experience some better weather conditions, I would like to remind all parents and carers that the continued wearing of outdoor garments in the Academy building is not appropriate. I still continue to see a range of non-uniform items being worn by some students. When they are challenged about this they sometimes take exception to this fact. Please support us by ensuring that they do wear the code of dress that they are supposed to. The examination season for Years 11-13 is looming on the horizon. All students need to take every opportunity that is provided for them for extra tuition and support from staff outside of the timetable. For example, Year 11 Maths clinics are in place every Tuesday night at the end of the Academy day. I have also asked all staff to make themselves available to Year 11s, in particular after school every Monday evening. This will continue through to the exam season starting. Also, to support students further, there is a new page on the Academy VLE, which can be accessed using this link below: http://portal.trfa.org.uk/schools/YIA/students/revision_site/SitePages/Home.aspx Through this link you will be able to support your child with their revision at home, pointing them to this and knowing that there are resources available for them.

I still continue to see a range of non-uniform items being worn by some students. When they are challenged about this they sometimes take exception to this fact. Please support us by ensuring that they do wear the code of dress that they are supposed to.

MathsMilan Cacacie wins Anna Julia Grinnell Award!

The Maths faculty have returned from their far-flung half-term holiday escapes in Cambridge, Birmingham, Switzerland and Malaysia, (bonus guild points for correctly matching the destination to staff member) and we can’t believe it’s already a week into Term 4!

With time marching on so quickly, it is increasingly important that Year 11 maximise study-time in lessons, and take advantage of all other available revision opportunities. Don’t forget Maths Clinic runs after school on Tuesdays, and revision guides and work books are available for purchase from school, as are scientific calculators and geometry sets – if you still don’t have these, get on it!! MyMaths, MangaHigh and Mathswatch provide a wealth of material to supplement your work too; see any of the Maths dept for a reminder of your login details if necessary.

At this stage every little maths-based activity will help, and will also be useful in helping all students improve their number-sense and mathematical thinking, so…

… on March 4th, get in the kitchen for Shrove Tuesday and make some pancakes to practise your measuring skills.

… take a break from the TV/internet/PS3/Xbox and indulge in some old-skool entertainment with a pack of cards, to help improve your understanding of probability.

… on Sat March 8th, settle yourself in front of the rugby and see how statistics and data are employed in TV sports coverage, as England take on Wales for the Triple Crown!

Don’t forget you can follow all the academy’s numerical successes, Nigel’s adventures and latest news by following us on Twitter, @TrfyiaMaths

Oak, Laurel and Sycamore classes have again visited the University of Bath to help aspire them about the possibilities for their future. They looked at a range of careers and then had to consider the skills and qualifications they may need in order to take on that job. They also toured the site and ‘graduated’ at the end of the day.
