ABOUT UPSTAGE
Dance & Cheer was founded in 1991, by Karen Clarke. In 2011, daughter Teneille Clarke took over the
school after dancing for 18 years with Upstage & expanded it into what it is today. Now also offering
the fastest growing sport in Australia - All-star Cheer - & an array of different Dance styles, Kindergym
& Fitness classes, there is something for everyone to enjoy here at Upstage! We are so proud of staff,
students & families for being the beautiful, supportive, fun Upstage Family that we are!
“We Wear the Crown!”
HOW TO BECOME AN UPSTAGE MEMBER
Becoming an Upstage member is easy! If you are new to Dance and Cheer
this year, drop in any time during our opening hours to talk to our staff or
jump online and simply fill out an enrolment form (Under ‘Forms” on our
website). This can also be done at Upstage prior to your first lesson, please
arrive 15mins early if doing so.
Upon registration & completing our Enrolment Form, you will also need to
fill out an Authorization Form & Customer Payment Form.
Competitive Dance/Cheer students must also fill out a Waiver/Release Form
& pay a $15 Insurance Fee to be able to compete in AASCF competitions.
Recreational classes are open to all individuals, for our Competitive Classes
students are required to tryout.
CLASS ATTENDANCE All students are expected to attend every Dance & Cheer class throughout the year.
If a student is absent for numerous dance classes, the class teacher will decide if the student does
half, one or two dances in the end of year concert. If absent from cheer, the coach may not allow the
student to compete. If Absent from Extreme Cheer or Dance more than the required amount
allowed, the student will not be allowed to participate in the upcoming competition.
Both teacher and coaches can provide private classes to help students falling behind or late
enrolments to catch up. These private classes are to be paid for by the client.
We expect that all efforts are made to attend class and team practices and that families take their
commitment seriously. If a student is absent from class, it negatively impacts the class/team, and
could affect their role in the routine/s.

WHAT WE OFFER AT UPSTAGE DANCE & CHEER
KINDERGYM: Casual, pay-as-you-go, parent/guardian assisted
class for girls & boys aged 1-4y. Class is structured starting with circuit
style layout of gymnastics/gym equipment (balance beams, tunnels,
climbing equipment, etc.), followed by Movement Songs (wiggles, hi-
5, etc.), Parachute Fun, Fun Activities &/or Free time with various
prop's (hoops, bean bags, pom-poms, ribbons). Finishing with a short
stretch/cool down & sticker to finish! Great for building strength &
motor skills, whilst also working on socialization skills amongst the
other children, & a great activity to do together! Perfect preparation for younger students wanting to
ease into Tiny Dance/Cheer classes.
TINY CLASSES: Our Tiny Classes for 2.5-5yrs are structured
to include fun songs to warm up with, stretching, basic foundations of technique & fun, age appropriate routines they'll love! Our teachers use latest Kids & Top 40 Music your child will love to bop along too. The perfect classes to start your little ones off in a fun & imaginative way of learning, moving in the right direction to continue into our program. Upstage offer many class styles for our Tiny’s including: Tiny Cheer (2.5-3y, 3-5y & 5-6y), Tiny Jazz/Tap, Tiny Ballet/Jazz, Tiny Acro &*NEW IN 2017* Tiny Comp Jazz Teams (3-4y & 5-6y) & Tiny Hip-hop!
CHEER: All-star, American Style Cheerleading. A 2:30 routine covering a range of
components including stunts, tumble, jumps & dance. An entertaining, high-energy sport building strength, flexibility & overall fitness. Cheer welcomes those of all shapes & sizes to find their roles within the team, encourages teamwork & strong work ethic from all athletes. We offer Levels 1-3, ages 2.5 - Open/Adult & both Competitive & Recreational teams available.
JAZZ: An energetic, fun, high-energy dance style that
enhances flexibility, performance & fitness. Routines are strong, sharp and dynamic. Jazz emerged alongside Jazz Music in the early 1900's & is forever changing - Modern Jazz Dance today represents our pop culture with new trends always emerging! Both traditional & modern styles are covered in classes depending on class’s abilities/suitability. Think kicks, turns, jumps, & isolations!
BALLET: The foundation of all dance styles, Ballet complements
other styles greatly especially Jazz & Contemporary/Lyrical. Ballet strengthens & lengthens the body, giving students a great
technical foundation to build from. Formalised movements & positions of the arms, feet & body, allows the dancer to move with control, lightness poise & grace in stunning routines. Think beautifully pointed feet, jumping, stretching & turning. Advanced students of age, with strong technique and ankles/feet may be asked to work on pointe after Physio (if desired).
TAP: Tap shoes with metal taps are worn, & feet are manipulated to create
different sounds & rhythms. Our Tinies especially love putting their Tap's on! A combination of both traditional & modern tap styles are covered in classes depending on class’s abilities/suitability (from Fred Astaire to Street Tap, e.g. Tap Dogs!). Tap will improve one's rhythm, musicality & certainly test & push co-ordination as students’ progress to more advanced work.
HIPHOP: A street style dance originating from New
York City in the 1970's, this style is always evolving & following trends of today. A popular dance style, seen in film clips from artists such as Usher, Chris Brown, Beyoncé, etc. & in popular dance films. Routines incorporate popping, locking, isolations & a combination of modern urban styles. And of course plenty of personality!
CONTEMPORARY/LYRICAL: A popular style
with many of our students. A modern fusion of both Contemporary & Lyrical styles. Contemporary originated from the rebellion of Classical Ballet - parrel feet, earthy, grounded movements & lots of floor work. Lyrical blends Ballet, Jazz & Contemporary styles, & uses lyrics/mood of music as inspiration to express
BROADWAY JAZZ: A stylized & theatrical style
of dance, based on the Jazz dance genre with a modern, sleek feel. This style emphasis’s & encourages performance & characterisation! Routines choreographed aren't always of music strictly from Musicals &/or Movies, but also sometimes music of a similar feel, such as Michael Buble & other jazz music. Think jazz hands, & lots of personality!
ACROBATICS: A class based around acrobatic elements. Students work
on flexibility, strength & stamina, & learn skills such as balances, rolls, handstands, further tumbling, group/partner lifts, etc. Such skills are then all combined together with basic dance & elements come together into a fun, entertaining routine for our End of Year Concerts. Classes increase student's strength, flexibility, balance, agility and motor coordination. This is especially great for our Tiny Acro students (3-5 years) to build & develop motor skills at such a vital age, whilst this style also complements our older cheerleaders & dancers alongside their classes.
*NEW IN 2017* MUSICAL THEATRE/JAZZ:
Classes will be Jazz based & routines will use modern, upbeat & fun music from the latest, popular Musical Theatre shows (E.G.: Hairspray, Matilda, Grease, etc.). Whilst based around the Jazz dance style, routines will incorporate a more theatrical side of the dance style & require more characterization, incorporating some acting within the routines whilst still being mostly dance focused.
*NEW IN 2017* ELITE ACROBATICS: Only open to selected students who have mastered a
combination of tumble skills &/or high levels of dance &/or flexibility. This class will put together a routine incorporating tumble skills, flexibility, balances & partner/group lifts blending in dance choreography to create a seamless routine. Students not enrolled in Cheer in this class, are highly encouraged to attend casual Tumble classes where possible to improve tumble skills.
*NEW IN 2017* STRETCH & STRENGTH: Upstage Highly
recommended for both our Cheerleaders & Dancers. Classes include a cardio warm-up, posture/alignment work, stretching & some strength exercises to ensure our students are kept safe with a balanced flexibility to strength ratio. Students are guided through stretches to increase flexibility throughout the whole body (hips, legs, backs, feet etc.), ensuring they become well-rounded, strong athletes to improve skill sets & prevent injuries. Modifications can be made to suit individuals & ensure everyone can benefit from this class. *STRETCH & STRENGTH IS A
CASUAL CLASS!*
TUMBLE: Starting with a warm-up & stretch, followed by work on skills
such as forward rolls, handstands, walkovers, front/back handsprings, tucks, etc. Tumble is a component of Cheer routines and accounts for a large percentage of scorecards from our competitive teams. Certain tumble skills are required for each level - for students to progress to higher levels, they must work hard to achieve their tumble skills. These do not happen overnight. Whilst tumble is included in teams weekly training we encourage extra classes, where possible, to ensure students progression. Encouraged
for our dance students also to build skill sets. *TUMBLE IS A CASUAL CLASS!* Limited privates also available - bookings only (see further in booklet).
ADULT CLASSES: Available in Parent Cheer Team (Compete in competitions throughout the
year!), Adult Hip-hop, Adult stretch/strength, Adult Tumble, Adult Tap & also *BACK IN 2017* Adult Contemporary Classes! Set aside some time each week for YOU! Lots of fun & great friendships are formed. Why not come & give it a go!
SINGING LESSONS: We offer external private Singing Lessons held at Upstage with the very
talented Rachael Giusti. There is flyers around Upstage with all details - feel free to ask reception if you need further information.
PRIVATES Privates are available for: *Tumble *Stunt Groups * Dance Technique * Competitive Dance Solo/Duo/Trios (see below) Catch-up Sessions for Dance or Cheer (i.e. new enrolments) These are very limited & must be booked in advance. AGE GUIDELINES
Please note, age guidelines on our Timetable are used as a guide only.
Some students may be better suited in a class within a different age guide, upon final teacher’s
discretion.
Upstage will ensure all students are placed into appropriate classes for age, abilities, experience,
readiness & work ethic. It is always best students are placed in classes that best reflects their
experience & goals, & generally best to be with similarly aged students where possible.
Our staff will let you know when it’s time to move up.
Competitive Dance Solo/Duo/Trios *NEW IN 2017* - Please let our staff know if you are interested & would like to be considered!
Upstage will offer Competitive Solos, Duos &/or Trios in 2017 upon invitation
only for students who are ready to take these on. Students will have weekly
private sessions to learn/clean routines & prepare for competitions.
You may choose to only learn a solo/duo/trio, & not compete if you wish also.
It is imperative students are 100% ready - they must excel in overall
flexibility/stamina & fitness, technique, performance & confidence in the
respective genre.
It is completely up to you how many competitions you wish to enter - as many or as less as you prefer!
Upstage will help manage all entries with you & be there for any queries you may have in relation to
competing.
Students must be enrolled in the same genre competitive team as to the genre they wish to
learn/compete in - this ensure students are receiving enough training to ensure readiness for the
competitive dance world!
“NO SPECTATORS” With the exception of a Student’s first class*, Upstage do not permit spectators in our Dance Studios/Cheer Gym while classes are in progress. We find having spectators in the class environment distracts students from their learning. Occasionally, some Coaches/Teachers may invite Parents/Guardians into the Dance Studio/Cheer Gym to see what students have been working on. Towards concert time, routines to be performed in our End of Year Concert are best kept a surprise for the big nights! If for any reason you need to go into the Studio/Gym, you must check with Reception first. *Parents may attend a student’s first class to ensure the child is okay with staff & settled/happy within their surroundings. We do find most students don’t concentrate or behave as best they can while Mum or Dad is in the room - if your child is misbehaving or distracted from class/looking over to you try encourage them from afar to continue with class, & if necessary please leave the room for a moment. Siblings are to sit on parent’s lap or wait in the foyer. If any spectators are too loud, they will be politely asked to leave.

comfortable and able to approach any member of staff
if needed.
We appreciate & understand sometimes parents may
need to talk to Coaches/Teachers about their children, however in most circumstances this may not be
before/during/after class. This is as it takes away valuable class time from Upstage students & classes
run back to back on a tight timetable.
If necessary, it is best to send a note with your child to give their Coach/Teacher or ask Reception
staff to pass on a quick message for you when they pop in to take class attendance.
If your query is lengthy or of a private nature, please…
1. Email info@upstagedanceandcheer with an email description “ATTN TO: MISS TENEILLE” or
“ATTN TO: MISS EMILY” as examples. It will then be forwarded on, & all communication will be via
Upstage.
2. Arrange to make an appointment with Teneille & Coach/Teacher. Please advise if you need any
specific Coaches/Teachers at the meeting.
Please note all communication to all Upstage staff must pass via Upstage. This will be strictly
reinforced in 2017. Please be aware our staff have working hours, families & some other jobs/Uni but
we will get back to you as soon as possible in appropriate working hours.
If students & parents wish to friend the Upstage staff on Facebook, it must only be through the staffs ‘Upstage’ Facebook if they have one. E.G.: Teneille Upstage Clarke is Teneille’s Upstage Dance & Cheer Face Book page – not her private account. Coaches/Teachers & staff will not accept any request’s on their personal pages. PERSONAL MOBILES: All Upstage staff, including Teneille, are not required to reply to any texts/phone calls on their personal mobile phones or messages via Facebook Messenger. Please refrain from contacting personal phones & ensure communication is all via Upstage. PLEASE NOTE: TENEILLE WILL BE ON MATERNITY LEAVE FROM 20th FEBRUARY – 18th APRIL.
SOCIAL MEDIA POLICY
You must be clear & ensure any information is factual & accurate. Any information must respect individuals & the studio. Information must not damage in any way the studios or members reputations or bring disrepute. If you wish to take a photo of your child & their peers you must check with the parent present, or blur out other students faces. Please do not publicly post videos of Upstage choreography/routines to any form of social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, etc) until after the routine has made its first performance (be it been at a competition, or End of Year Concert). When posting please mention/tag Upstage Dance & Cheer & name the Coach/Teacher where applicable.
CHILD SAFE POLICY Will be available from 30/1/17. An email copy will be sent out, available on our website (under ‘Forms’)
& hard copies at reception if you need.
BULLYING POLICY & STUDENT
DISCIPLINE Upstage Dance & Cheer will not tolerate bullying, rude or
disrespectful behavior towards or from any member of Upstage
(Students, Staff, Families).
Any student displaying this behavior in class will be sent out of class
& have a parent/guardian contacted. If behavior continues, the
student will be removed from the class or if necessary Upstage
immediately.
If your child is having trouble in class please speak to Reception staff, or email:
[email protected] or [email protected]
Upstage staff will do their best to make everyone comfortable & happy, but if for any reason you have a
class, teacher or staff concern please contact Teneille via email so we can fix the issue straight away.
EXTREME HEAT POLICY Classes/Trainings will not run if outside temperature is/exceeds 37+ Degrees - a text will be sent to each
family if class cannot take place.
This is in best interest of students & staff as our factory can get quite hot & dancing/cheering in these
conditions is not only unpleasant, but also unsafe.
If you have already paid for class/training, it will be credited to the follow class or term.
We make every effort to provide replacement classes in the case of Extreme Heat.
No refunds are entitled - only a credit/replacement class in this instance, as per Upstage Refund Policy.
INJURY/ILLNESS PROCEDURE
If any injury/issue whereby 1st Aid attention was required to a student (even
just applying an icepack) an injury report will be filled out by a member of
staff. A copy will be sent home with the student also.
If a student has an injury or illness they are managing in class they must let
their Coach/Teacher know or if ongoing remind them at the start of the class
via note. This way students can be kept a close eye on. If any pain occurs
during class, students are asked to assess if they need to sit out for a
moment. Coaches/Teachers will encourage where they can for students to
join back in carefully, if possible to do so (i.e. pain has stopped).
Students with injuries or minor illness must still attend class to watch as to
not fall behind their class/team. Students can learn a lot from viewing the
class as opposed to taking it & watch other students take on corrections,
students may see what the teacher is explaining, etc.
Students with serious or ongoing injuries must bring a note from a
parent/guardian & full Medical/Physio Certificate stating what they can & cannot do in class/training.
Extreme Cheer & Allstar Dance Competitive Teams require a full Medical/Physio Certificate of
illness/Injury if it results in an absence with respective date/s. Please see Competitive Team Guide for
further details.
COMPLAINT PROCEDURE If you wish to lodge a complaint about another member of Upstage, please email Upstage to discuss a
possible meeting: [email protected]. All complaints & queries will be dealt with
promptly, seriously & with sensitivity & remain confidential.
CARPARK
Please drive slowly & carefully through the factories,& taking care when parking at Upstage. We have
many young students & siblings around.
Parents please ensure you are supervising your children during drop-off/pick-up & walking younger
students to the door. Occasionally traffic from other nearby businesses pass through quite quickly &
large trucks included so do ensure children are all constantly supervised by an adult.
Please teach your child the importance of waiting inside until a parent/guardian has arrived. Do not
let your children run around, run across or play in the car park. If Upstage staff see any students
doing so - they will be asked to come inside immediately.
Please do not park in front of ANY roller doors. The right side of Upstage, in front of our roller door, is
for staff parking only.
Feel free to use our disabled car space if available as it is very rarely used - Upstage Reception can
ask you to move your car to be moved if necessary but this is very unlikely. We may use “Mr
Showbag’s” carpark only well after their business hours.
Our carpark becomes very full quite quickly - please consider drop & go where possible
(recommended).
WAITING AREA Upstage advise all parents to drop & go.
We don’t allow spectators & our waiting room (through
glass walls, by Reception) is designed only to suit those in
need. Please note smoking is not permitted inside Upstage
or at the front of the Upstage building. Please respect our
waiting areas & surroundings.
Parents are to please keep out ‘Student Only Zone’, off the
staircase, & keep all doorways clear, at all times.
The ‘Student Only Zone’ is a safe area for our students to wait before/between classes, eat
snacks/dinner or wait for pick up. Students bringing meals to eat between multiple classes may use
the fridge & ask our staff for help when using microwave.
Please remind your child to clean any mess they may create - A small vacuum is available & kept in
the ‘Student Only Zone’.
