hymn of praise! How can you squat there grimly awaiting doom when this circus of sound is soaring all about you? How can you cocoon yourself in your woeful shell when the whole rest of creation reels in a dance? How can you pick over your woes like a miser with coins when the Lord of the Dance has made you only to live?”

These words stir my soul. Perhaps they will yours.

God treasures you. Live in ways revealing that you treasure God.

A popular brand of salad dressing is Wishbone. The plastic bottles that this dressing is packaged in are shaped like wishbones.

Do you ever feel like a “wishbone” yourself?

As we head down the homestretch of this major political election trail, both major parties are “throwing CHANGE” at us! Republicans (“We Can Change It”) and Democrats (“Change That Matters”)

are playing the “CHANGE” card. Long before now, loads of complaints were being heard from folks like you and me weary of being barraged with political ads! Meantime, candidates’ ads keep coming…. To keep our sanity, we’ve got to find some humor in it, right?!

utumn is here! Whew! What a relief this is after that scorcher of a summer we endured! Not only is this the season for colorful leaves, cooler temps, and more; this is a season when our congregation “journeys” together, exploring growing edges in our individual and collective commitments to Christ. Friends, as we forge ahead together on our continuing, Christian pilgrimage, I marvel at the goodness of God.

God is Above us, Above all. God is Beyond us, Beyond all.

Recently, one of you sent me a message expressing these very meaningful thoughts: Love people; use things. Do not love things; do not use people.

Then, more recently, in my personal devotions just yesterday, I read William J. O’Malley’s translation of Psalm 33. Here it is:

“Anyone with a voice to sing, shout for joy! Wipe off your solemn faces and grab a harp! Stop squinting at all your troubles and look around! We live on a turquoise jewel in a sea of stars, amid the heavenly carousel our God has made. The ocean harrumphs on the shore, the wind keens through the trees, streams chuckle, geysers hoot, and valleys reverberate it back again in a great, wild, symphonic (Continued on page 2)

My fellow

“wishbones,”

before we snap

in two,

let’s try something

different!

You and I can choose another path.

I believe that God in Christ commands

us to choose the path of faithful action.

Here’s an amusing FACEBOOK comment: “Of course, we’d love to spend millions on roads and education; but right now the money is needed for political ads!” :)

My fellow “wishbones,” before we snap in two, let’s try something different! You and I can choose another path. I believe that God in Christ commands us to choose the path of faithful action. It is God’s “still more excellent way” (1 Corinthians 12:31). It is a path of complaining less and doing more; a path of criticizing less and loving more. This summons to action brings to mind one of India’s 20th century inspirational leaders. Words spoken by Mahatma Gandhi offer humankind both an invitation and a challenge. Gandhi said, “Be the change you want to see in the world.”

Hallelujah! How about you and I truly applying ourselves to this quest? Let’s be the change we believe that God would like to see! This is actively living out our calling to “Accept the Cost and Share the Joy of Discipleship .”

As the hands and feet of God, we put our faith to work in service to the world, trusting in the One who has helped us, named us, and called us to lead us to those in need. Let us love as God loves: with hands ready to get dirty, with feet ready to walk far, with eyes ready to see hardship, with hearts ready to receive. Let us love as God loves: with lives ready to serve.

Get this. You are treasured by Loving, “Above-and-Beyond-All” God. Live like it! Accept the cost. Share the joy. Marvel at the goodness of God. Be the change God wants to see in the world.

Reflect the goodness of God through the way you live,

Pastor Dan

give thanks to God, for God is good; for God’s

CALLED TO ACCEPT THE COST

AND SHARE THE JOY

OF DISCIPLESHIP

STEWARDSHIP JOURNEY CONTINUES…

Our congregation continues the stewardship pilgrimage through Sunday, October 14. This journey will be a continuation of the theme addressed in 2011:

“CALLED TO ACCEPT THE COST AND SHARE THE JOY OF DISCIPLESHIP.”

Stewardship mailings are sent to the congregation this autumn as our “journey” together progresses. A Stewardship Dessert featuring our Guest Witnessing Steward is planned for the evening of Thursday, October 4th, 7:30pm, at the home of Ray and Rosalie Buente. This is an opportunity for everyone in our congregation to enjoy highly personal interaction with our Guest Steward.

Our shared stewardship “journey” will culminate on Consecration Sunday, October 14, when we will celebrate by offering God our 2013 Estimates of Giving during worship and by sharing a luncheon together. (extra cards of the 2013 Estimates of Giving will be available) We thank God for guiding us as we devote our hearts and souls to the joys of faithful discipleship and personal commitments supporting Christ’s ministries lived out through Ivy Chapel United Church of Christ.

BREAD BAKING

FRESH FOR THE LORD'S SUPPER Whether you have never baked before, or are a veteran, join us to explore the world of bread on Saturday, October 6 at 1pm. We will gather at the Heend’s house to bake several kinds of bread for WORLD COMMUNION DAY on October 7. Don’t miss this meaningful and fun experience. Please RSVP to Sarah Heend (314-283-5215 or [email protected]).

WORLD FOOD DAY - AN ALL CHURCH EVENT!!

ALL MEMBERS OF THE CONGREGATION ARE ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND!

Come represent Ivy Chapel UCC on Friday, October 12 as John Burroughs School hosts a

community food packaging event to commemorate "World Food Day." World Food Day is

observed annually and is intended to to increase awareness, understanding and action to

alleviate hunger. It is held in recognition of the founding of the United Nations' Food and

Agriculture Organization.

St. Louis World Food Day, Friday, Oct. 12 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., will need 1000+

"Packaging Partners" to join us in packaging over 200,000 nutritious meals for children in a

school-based feeding program in Tanzania. "Packaging Partners" provide not only their

service and enthusiasm, each is asked to provide a registration fee ($10 youth - $20 adult)

which will help to offset the cost of your packaging session: the true costs of the ingredients,

supplies, materials and shipping to Africa is approximately $35 per person.

Beth Noonan has offered to coordinate a group from our congregation if anyone is interested

in attending. If you would like to participate, or would like more information, contact Beth

Noonan at [email protected].

As I sit here writing this.. I'm all curled up in a blanket. HELLO FALL! I have missed you. I was afraid our summer heat wave/drought was going to continue far into fall. Thankfully, that is not the case. I'm so ready for pumpkin lattes, hot chocolates and crisp, beautiful colored leaves. I definitely want to do a pile of leaves photo shoot. With Miller being crazy about jumping, it shouldn't be hard to get him to do it. Watch, I say that now, but as soon as I try, he'll change his mind. He seems to know what I want him to do, and then, does the complete opposite. It can be so difficult, but I know that in the minute I pray for patience, I'm already more relaxed. He's only this young for such a short time. I need to step back from wanting everything perfect, and allow him to just be a kid even if that means I don't get my photo shoot :)

I am reminded by the arrival of fall that the Christmas Cantata is just around the corner. We will be performing the cantata on December 9th this year (a day before my birthday if anyone's looking at the calendar). The cantata this year is "Emmanuel, God With Us" arranged by Lloyd Larson. We will begin rehearsals Wednesday October 3rd at 8:00PM. If you are interested in singing the cantata but cannot make all rehearsals, that is ok. I am at the church frequently. I can meet with you to help learn the parts individually if necessary. Also, if you are interested in a

WORLD COMMUNION SUNDAY

On October 7, congregations across the UCC and countless other denominations will celebrate Holy Communion. Ivy Chapel and other UCC churches approach Eucharist with diverse traditions, meaningful practices.

But in an increasing globalized world, where differences can be divisive, sharing in the elements of the Lord's Supper is the quiet constant that unites believers of Christ—that grace, redemption and healing are afforded through the simple sharing of sacred bread and cup.

Please return to Pastor Wilson or church office by October 26

You will recall one of the traditions of our forebears

in Christian faith is the celebration of “Totenfest”

(German for ‘The Festival of the Dead’). Ivy Chapel will

share together in this sacred ritual. Since All Saints’

Day is Thursday, November 1st this year. We’ll observe

“Totenfest” during worship on November 4. You are

invited and encouraged to submit the names of those

you love who have died within this past year. Please

provide the name(s) IN WRITING to our church office

by Friday, October 26. A printed list will be posted just

outside Pastor Dan’s study. As the date approaches,

please verify that the name of each person you would

like recognized is on the list. The names will be read

aloud during our November 4th worship . Thank you.

On a beautiful September day, a group of eleven ladies journeyed to Irene Gulovsen's home in Godfrey, Illinois We had a delicious lunch and delightful visit with Irene, including a time of devotion and business meeting. A letter of appreciation has been received from ECH for the wrapping paper, ribbon, etc. that M&M provided earlier this year. Announcements were made regarding upcoming Emmaus events. On October 16, the M&M ladies will go for a tour of ECH, leaving Ivy at 12:30 p.m. for car pooling. The group decided to participate in the Vendors' Fair with a bake sale. Reservations for the Brass Concert on December 4 at Manchester Methodist Church should be made with Nancy Litzinger.

he use of colors to differentiate liturgical seasons became a common practice in the Western church in about the fourth century. At first, usages varied considerably but by the 12th century Pope Innocent III systematized the use of five colors: Violet, White, Black, Red and Green. The Lutheran and Anglican churches that emerged from the Reformation retained the traditional colors but they disappeared entirely (along with most other ritual) from the worship of the Reformed churches. During the 20th century, the ecumenical Liturgical Movement prompted the rediscovery of ancient Christian ritual—including the traditional colors of the Western church. To these have been added Blue and Gold—colors that were used in some Western rites before the 12th century."

CD, please see me, and I'll see that you get one. If you cannot make rehearsal on the 3rd but are interested in singing, please see me so I can make sure we have an adequate number of copies.

Also, if the cantata is too much of an undertaking, but you'd still like to try singing with the choir, please let me know. I understand it is a time commitment, but its not the end of the world if you can't make it every Sunday. We have a sign out sheet in the choir, and I try to take into consideration how many voices I have on that particular Sunday when picking out the anthems. Why not drop in and give it a shot? Who knows, you may absolutely love it, and I know that we would absolutely love to have you. You do not need to be a professional singer to join us.

Well, it's time to sit back in my blankie and enjoy some Curious George. I hope you all are enjoying this marvelous (so far) fall.

Until next time...Keep Smiling, Anna-
