Jennie
―I was so grateful and honored that the company
was able to appreciate what I have contributed
for the past year. I considered the people closest
to my heart as my inspiration—God, family, my
special loved one, colleagues, and my immediate
superior Ms Malu. Five years from now, I see my-
self as a service awardee. I began my career
here in UNILAB, and I can see [myself] ending
my career here as well.‖ 4
―Jennie is smart, organized, proactive, and with diverse interests. She has this
huge appetite for learning. What makes her standout is that she always wel-
comes challenges.‖

ancing Act. And will you succeed? Yes! You will, indeed! (98 and ¾ percent guaranteed) Kid,
you'll move mountains.‖ ― Dr. Seuss, Oh, The Places You'll Go! ―Congratulations on this achievement, Sis! I'm sure you'll be having more of this in the
future. More than this, I pray for you happiness, contentment and all the things that
matters most in life. Cheers!‖ - Kathryn Rubio

possible and to do things beyond our wildest imagination."

――Kaya natin ‗to‖, her usual line when someone‘s about to give up on their challenges.
A line that describes her as a strong, hardworking person that is up to any challenge
that she encounter. As greatly expressed in her words and in her actions, this line also
defines her contagious optimism.
Cecile as commonly addressed by her colleagues is a very simple and transparent
person, what you see is what you get. And what you constantly get is something posi-
tive. Always polite and cheerful, she never fails to brighten up anyone‘s day with her
warm smile.
A skillful and detail oriented worker, she makes sure that every project given to her will
be completely accomplished. She is always willing to take the extra mile to obtain su-
perior results and is always willing to extend a helping hand to the other project mem-
bers.
Sometimes a cry baby, her tears signify heartfelt appreciation and gratitude towards a
person or the situation. With her humility, generosity and blissful disposition in life, you
just got to adore her..‖

grateful for this great breakthrough in my life. I
thank God for His outpoured blessings to me. I

working with new responsibilities. I see
UNILAB as my retirement home.‖ 8

makes her standout is that she has excellent customer service skills.‖
- Ms. Analyn Manuel, AVP for PM-GP Cluster
Omi
Messages from Friends ―I call this girl as ―Atey‖ as I consider her as one of
my crazy sisters here in SMM.
One can definitely enjoy her company as she is the
type of girl that can easily be with.
She is undoubtedly a cheerful person. Minsan nga tu-matawa na lang siya mag isa. She has her signature, high pitch laugh. Omi is
good in singing, dancing, skating, and eating (she loves to eat!)– absolutely a tal-
ented girl! ―
-Josel de Quintos ―If you haven't been with her, then you're missing out on a lot. Omi, more than a per-
son is an experience. You'll get to experience burping sessions and random spontane-
ous laughter whenever you're with her. It can be quite scary at times, but you'll eventu-
ally get used to it. What other don't know about Omi is she can be a really good
confidant. When you need a confidant to destress, she's always happy to offer to lis-
ten.
Chismosa kasi siya! Joke lang :) (But jokes are half meant. Haha) But kidding aside,
Omi is a really great person. Her craziness, wackiness, sincerity, positivity makes her
one unique gal whom I'm lucky and blessed with to call my friend. :)‖ -Val Jalijali

SMM KICKS OFF TO A MORE PRODUCTIVE 2013 by Joanna Cruz-Danao
Where the new you begins… With
this promise of Camp Benjamin, Sourcing
and Materials Management trooped to the
venue located in Alfonso, Cavite for their
much-awaited kick-off and team building
event last February 28, 2013. The three-day
session was spearheaded by Bong Rabaya,
Lawrence Liao and the hardworking mem-
bers of the Team Building Committee.
Day 1 activities started with a wel-
come lunch followed by the presentation of
corporate updates and OCS results by Ms.
Tessa Castro. Afterwards, all clusters gath-
ered for the KRA alignment and calibration
to address key team issues and set their
goals for the year.
A special ceremony in the evening
was held as the Job Recognition Program
(JRP) recognized employees who have made
significant contributions to the corporate
business as well as divisional goals. Organ-
ized by the Rewards and Recognition Com-
mittee, the program honored employees
who have shown exemplary performance in
2012. Aside from the individual perform-
ance awards, JRP featured the innovators
awards which aims to encourage innova-
tion, seeking to highlight those projects that
drive increased customer satisfaction through
efficient productivity and work simplification.

GAME NA. Brainstorming session
Model Employee for 2012, Cecille Ilang-Ilang, as she receives her award [with her trademark tears (of joy)]
Getting down to the main theme of
the event, Day 2 offered the team opportu-
nities to learn more about getting the
RIGHT things done in the workplace
through the Productivity Journey Workshop
led by HROD‘s Marie Kristine Lee. Each
cluster huddled together to create their jour-
ney map describing their group‘s current
standpoint, targets and challenges. With
top management giving their response in
terms of what critical concerns will be im-
mediately addressed, the workshop en-
abled the members to gain control of their
resources and focus their attention and en-
ergy where they will produce dramatic re-
sults.
Then, it was time for a fun competi-
tive game – the Ace Cook-off facilitated by
the friendly staff of Camp Benjamin. Each
team was given left-over ingredients which
they had to transform into gastronomic
dishes. The chefs worked with their creative
juices given the limited ingredients and
equipments while the rest of the group
came up with an entertaining commercial
to present the finished menu to the judges.
Interestingly, there were some delicious
dishes while the others failed to please
the judges‘ taste buds. But overall, this
portion reinforced team spirit, creativity in
maximizing resources and fun productivity.
To cap off the workshops, each member
signed off their commitment to the divi-
sional goals and objectives.

After these activities, it was time to
have some more fun. SMM had the rest of
the night to unwind and relax with a bar-
becue party highlighted by song and
dance performances. The morning of Day
3 left memorable moments as the group
engaged in outdoor fun from swimming,
zipline, wall climbing, biking to trekking in
the organic farm.
In the end, the insights and experiences
from the team building enabled the divi-
sion to welcome a new approach on how
to achieve desired results. Ensuring every-
body has a vital role and utilizing the
strengthened overall team dynamic will be
the key to productivity in 2013 and the
years to come. .

RIDE THE WAVE OF WINNING: Sourcing and Materials Management‘s
Total Quality Achievement Awards 2013 by Kats Malabanan
Quality at source is an essential com-
ponent of Total Quality Management. In
Unilab, the Sourcing and Materials Man-
agement division (SMM) upholds the thrust
of Trusted Quality Healthcare by ensuring
continuous supply of high-quality, cost-
competitive materials from the most reliable
suppliers around the world. After Unilab‘s
$-1B success in 2012, SMM, together
with Corporate Quality Assurance & Com-
pliance (CQA&C) and Manufacturing,
once again recognized the top performing
suppliers in the 14th annual Total Quality
Achievement Awards (TQAA).
More commonly known as
―Supplier‘s Night‖, the TQAA honors
Unilab‘s most outstanding suppliers based
on their quality, delivery, and cost perform-
ance for the previous year. A total of 59
suppliers were recognized during the
awards night held at the J.Y. Campos Hall
last May 6, 2013 – 40 Preferred Suppli-
ers (with a rating of 95.00-98.99%) and
19 Certified Suppliers (99.00% and
above). The highest honor, the Model of
Excellence award, was given to six suppli-
ers who have been recipients of the Certi-
fied suppliers award for the past three
consecutive years. 13
WELCOME AND CONGRATULATIONS. Guests as they sign up during registration.
RIDE THE WAVE OF WINNING. The "flash mob" of Unilab employees, supplier represen-tatives, Limited Edition dancers with choreog-rapher Mickey Perz and Sam Concepcion set the tone for the night with their energetic dance number.
This year‘s TQAA theme, Ride the
Wave of Winning, not only depicts a cele-
bration of joint victory, but more impor-
tantly expresses the commitment to excel-
lence of Unilab and its valued partners.
―We are riding high on the wave of
winning, because 2012 was yet another
year of great achievements… without your
support and cooperation, those achieve-
ments could not have been realized,‖ Op-
erating Vice-President of SMM, Tessa Cas-
tro, explained, addressing the audience of
supplier representatives in her introductory
remarks.
Corporate Vice-President of Manufac-
turing and Supply Network Development,
Nestor Felicio was quick to point out, how-
ever, that ―though we are sailing on fairly
smooth waters today, we must not be com-
placent. The tides may change at any mo-
ment.‖
What matters most, as the two divi-
sion heads emphasized, is the common at-
titude towards quality and innovation that
Unilab shares with its valued partners.
―Quality will always be the guiding
force behind Unilab,‖ Ms. Castro contin-
ued, to which Mr. Felicio added, ―It is
[our] complete dedication to quality that
will continue to raise us high above the
competition.”

SMM SNAPSHOTS
We often don’t have the time to clean our
work area everyday – that’s understandable.
Cleaning can be a really tedious task and some-
times (or most of the time) we don’t want to do
it. Yet it’s just one of those things that needs to
be done. Being clean means being organized. It
applies to everything, from our bodies to places
that we go to or stay. Being clean makes us feel
good about ourselves and in turn we share these
good vibes to others as well. It is also a habit,
which means that you constantly practice it until
it becomes part of your life.
We know every department has different needs.
Some deal with lots of documents and others
have tons of digital files. As the Housekeeping
Committee, how do we cater to their needs? A
few weeks ago, we held a roadshow for different
SMM groups to promote this year’s motto “A
Place for Everything and Everything in its Place”,
which aims to be the guide in SMM’s road to a
better organization starting with organizing the
work area.
We received good feedback from team leaders
and their members during the cascade, saying
that housekeeping is an essential tool that needs
to be practiced. Some even came up with a
housekeeping plan and others vouched that they
will practice the “2 Minute Rule”, which answers
the question of "What will I do with these docu-
ments that I received? Do I file it, do it now, dele-
gate or throw it away?" Sounds very simple but
is also a lot of work.
plan.
So how will we do it? The Housekeeping Com-
mittee will help you craft and monitor the pro-
gress of a plan that is unique to every team’s
needs.
Questions such as "What files do you need
most? What are the things that should be
filed? Where is the proper place to store
these files?" Will be answered as we practice
the plan.
What’s good about this program is that you
will be the one to evaluate your progress
based on your stated plan. In the next issue of YeSMM, we will tackle the
principles behind housekeeping and update
you on the different teams' progress, so stay
informed. :)
