A HAPPY & PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL

Hi Everyone, well I have returned from Thailand and do I have a story to tell, turn to pages 28 & 29 to read all about my great adventure.

Yesmag is one year old in February and I would like to thank all our readers and advertisers for your support in the last twelve months, without you we would not have been a success. We have had a great selection of advertisers during this time and most of them have remained with us for the duration, thank you. I have entered for the London Marathon on April 17th 2011 supporting the charity ‘Get Kids Going’ . Any sponsorships would be much appre-ciated. The form can be found on our website www.yesmag.co.uk. We are promoting our Wedding Services this month so if anyone is deciding to take that step then please check out the services offered in our Bridal Section by our wedding photographer, beauty & cake advertisers, etc they will make your day one to remember without breaking the bank. I recently attended Aspire Beauty Salon in Craig y don to have some semi-permanent make-up on my eyes and eyebrows, the difference it has made is fantastic and less hassle for me in the mornings as I am hopeless applying make-up, please give it a try as you will be amazed at the transformation, if it can make me look good then trust me, everyone else will look fantastic., go on gents why not treat your wife or partner, it would be a great Valentine present , if you are having problems thinking of one, us ladies enjoy our beauty treatments. I wish you all a Happy New Year Dianne Harris Editor

K een gardeners gain a great deal of pleasure and use from a greenhouse. This construc-tion extends the growing season of your

garden and protects your precious pot-grown plants from the winter cold. It can be used for raising bedding plants from seed, rooting cuttings, overwintering semi-hardy and tender peren-nials or growing exotic fruit and vegetables

Installing a greenhouse is not something to be undertaken lightly as a lot of work is involved in its upkeep. Daily watering, ventilation, insect management, sunlight and temperature control and general maintenance make owning a glasshouse very labour intensive. It's almost like owning a pet, a big responsibility; who will be able to look after it during your holidays? As tempting as it is to build one yourself, it is highly recommended that you get a professional in to erect it for you. It may seem like an easy, meccano-esque job, but you will regret it almost as soon as you start. Choose the largest greenhouse you can afford and fit into your garden. Smaller green-houses are more difficult to maintain than larger ones as it's much harder to control temperature in a confined area.

Wooden frames are the most attractive but wood warps and rots after some years. Cheap soft woods may only last five years while hardwoods, such as teak, last longer but aren't ecologically sound and are very expensive. Galvanised steel is strong and durable, but does rust eventually. PVC is a cheaper framing material but it's not very strong and deteriorates in sunlight. There is a special UV protected PVC which should last for around 20 years. Fibreglass frames are also available. Aluminium is the most popular choice as it's low maintenance and durable. Watch out for steel screws and bolts though, as these will

rust. Glazing materials are the next option. Basically you choose between glass and plastic. The main drawbacks of plastics are their lack of total transparen-cy and tendency to scratch. They diffuse light more than glass, so there's less chance of your plants being scorched. Plastic also retains heat more efficiently and is lighter than glass. Glass is great, but fragile, so if you have children buy strengthened safety glass. It's also heavy so you may need a foundation for a large

greenhouse. This is another reason for dealing with professional greenhouse companies who will advise you which materials are best for you.

Summer sun sends the temperature inside your greenhouse soaring to amazing levels, so ventilation and temporary shading are essential. Plan how to soften the sun's glare during the summer months as too much concentrated sunlight damages plants beyond rescue. The cheapest method is to use a special window paint which you wipe off in the autumn.

Good ventilation is paramount to preventing mould and mildew building up in your greenhouse, so get many opening windows in the roof and along the sides. Proper guttering will prevent damp-ness. Heating your greenhouse is another consideration. Most people have a cold greenhouse with no heating. Once you start heating it, costs rocket but the range of plants you can grow in-creases. Again, this is something you will need to research yourself depending on your planting requirements. If you do decide to heat your greenhouse, then an electric fan heater is the best choice as it will circulate the air.

This is by no means a definitive article on choosing a greenhouse but hopefully will give you the incentive to research your needs more fully and select a new installation with confidence

Common Snowdrop - Galanthus nivalis

Many people‟s favorite flower, the well-known snowdrop is

widely celebrated as a sign of winter ending and the arrival of

spring. William Wordsworth dedicated an entire poem to the

“Chaste Snow-drop, venturous harbinger of Spring”.

Snowdrops are not a native plant to Britain and were

probably brought here in the early sixteenth century. Since

then, they have naturalised themselves in woodlands and

can grow in spectacular abundance in some areas. It is

forbidden to collect bulbs from the wild as the plants are

now endangered in their non-domestic habitat. There are about twenty

species of snowdrop. Reaching between 7-15 cm tall, they produce their dainty white and green

blooms between January and April depending on climate, location and species. „Giant‟ snowdrops

are actually a completely different genus called Leucojum. Their common name is Snowflake and

they are much larger and flower in spring or early summer.

The perennial, herbaceous snowdrop grows from small bulbs that should be planted „in the green‟.

This means the plants will rarely grow if you just plant the bulb. Instead, new plants should be

divided carefully from existing clumps while the leaves are still showing but after the flowers have

died down.

The Lifelong Healthy Journey

T here is no other time of the year when as many people decide to 'do something' about their weight as January.

A combination of Christmas holiday excesses and the feeling that the New Year is time for a fresh start, prompt people to address the uncomfortable and unhealthy feeling that being overweight gives them. However like so many New Year's resolutions the determination is often short-lived and old ways soon return. The key to success is not just to view the change in eating and exercise habits as a one off task that needs to be over and done with as soon as possible. Weight control is a lifelong journey and the best time to start is when you’re young. The next best time to start is today!

Eat Less or Exercise More? When you eat less you are

taking a negative action; that is you are avoiding certain foods and depriving yourself. When you exercise more however, you are taking a positive approach to not just your weight control but your general health; action is so much more psychologically rewarding than avoidance. When you take a walk after dinner you relax, improve your digestion, enhance your vitality and burn fat and calories. After the walk you feel better both physically and emotion-ally. That's not to say that you shouldn't address your diet and nutrition. There is a billion pound industry associated with the different ways you can lose weight, all of which are preying on society's desire for a quick fix and a magic formula.

Many people will report success having followed advice in a book or on a website, but what you don't hear of is those that have failed, and those that succeeded but regained all the weight as soon as they stopped. But they do work for some because just by reading about weight loss it will motivate you to take action, and

furthermore can provide you a framework to which you can adhere. For example if the weight loss plan tells you 'no carbohydrate' it's something you don't have to think too hard about and you know you can have anything you want except carbohydrate. You are only depriving yourself of one type of food rather than saying you have to restrict all foods.

Keeping with our theme of a lifelong journey though, one of the best things you can do is just to return to basics and stick to healthy food. If you cut out sugar, cakes, biscuits, chocolate, wine, beer and crisps you already have your framework. And most importantly identify your weakness: if you have a sweet tooth for example, start your diet by telling yourself you can have anything you want provided it doesn't contain sugar. Indeed, not only will this help with your immediate weight loss, but the less you indulge your weakness, the less of it you will crave.

Similarly exercise should be approached as something on going. If you go from not exercising at all to telling yourself on the 1st January that you must exercise for an hour a day, 5 days a week, both exhaustion and the time restrictions will mean that you'll be beating yourself about your lack of willpower before you've reached the end of the month. It’s far better to say that your goal is to be out of breath at least twice a week and to know you can reach that goal for 52 weeks. Conversely to the unhealthy food cravings, the wellbeing you feel after exercising will actually make you want to do more.

Working from home

The Taxman Cometh by Ted Bruning

I ’ve just had a letter from the taxman.

Brown envelopes with the letters HMRC on the back always frighten me badly enough as it is; this one

chilled my blood with cold. It told me that I owed them £237.21 and warned me that if I didn’t pay like yesterday, they’d send the bailiffs in and remove anything of value they could find.

Which wouldn’t be much, actually: I don’t think that all my worldly goods put together are worth that much – certainly not since the T-reg Vectra went to the scrapyard with a terminally ill gearbox. But still, you don’t want gents in hobnailed boots trampling all over your house and removing your chattels, do you?

So anyway, I rang the taxman’s lair and told them I was paying every month by direct debit, and I’d checked my bank statements and the payments were going out as usual; and a very cheery young man with a reassuring Scottish accent told me not to worry, they sent these letters out to everyone and as long as my payments continued I could ignore it.

Phew! Ten days later another letter arrived,

exactly the same as the first except that the amount outstanding had now gone up to £241.17. Instantly my blood froze again. Perhaps that cheery young Scot had been wrong? Perhaps, even as I read, the bailiffs were trudging purposefully towards my door with a warrant and a battering-ram and a firm intention of removing my microwave oven and my vinyl collection?

This time the phone was answered rather less cheerily by a lady who said yes, as long as I was paying I was all right but if I stopped, even for an instant, I’d be breaking stones on Dartmoor before you could say chain gang. I said I had no intention of stopping, and why was HMRC sending me all these terrifying letters? “For legal reasons,” she replied, and put the phone down. Legal reasons! Legal reasons? What law says that HMRC must spend about 50p every 10 days on warning perfectly

innocent self-employed people who have shown absolutely no sign of defaulting that a horrible doom awaits them if they even think about it? How much does this tot up to in terms of stationery and postage? Aren’t these supposed to be straitened times? Will someone please tell me what’s going on?

Anyway, this is why I spend £400 plus VAT every year to get an accountant to do my tax return for me. Other self-employed people tell me that the tax return is simplicity itself even for a hopeless innumerate like me, and chide me for spending almost as much as I seem to earn these days on such an indulgence. But my accountant is no mere luxury.

When you work completely on your Jack Jones there is no-one to tell you why the printer isn’t working, why you can’t get the text into the box properly in your latest presentation, and what you have to do to put them right. You need either to develop a manly self-sufficiency or, if you’re anything like me, collapse in a gibbering heap and summon a professional.

My accountant is great like that. She makes smooth the crooked path of income tax. She stands like a rock between the quivering jelly that is me and the legion of demons that is HMRC. She is a matronly bosom when I graze my metaphorical knee. She is, in short, indispensable to my mental, as well as my fiscal, health. But I must stop calling her “mummy”.

Thailand

A small minority of Thai people, and also sometimes foreigners, try to trick you out of your money. One of the most common scams is the Tuk Tuk Scam. If you are walking around Bangkok looking at a map, someone will come up to you and ask where you are looking for, they will then suggest you take a special tuk tuk ride for only 20 baht to the nearby Big Buddha and Lucky Buddha, when you arrive at one of the said Buddhas and go inside, there is a person in there waiting for you, they start making conversation with you pretending that they are also a tourist, they then start to tell you that they have recently visited a gem factory which is offering Sapphires tax free for this week only and that he bought some which he will be taking back home to sell for double the money which pays for his holiday , if you fall for it and go there then the tuk tuk driver gets a nice fat commission, and you get ripped off.

The pressure is high to buy and the products are overpriced. If someone suggest that you take a Tuk Tuk then please do not listen as they are scammers and that is the beginning. If a Thai person comes up to you and starts speaking excellent English then be suspicious. Normally Thai people are shy and wouldn't do something like that. However, we please ask you not to be rude initially as this person might genuinely be trying to help you, but if they persist then politely ask them to go away.

The store premises above, did have what seemed to be legitimate jewellery, but somehow they managed to move us to another section, ‘to show us the nicer collection’ We somehow were blind-sided, bought worthless gems and signed a refund policy for 80 per cent face value , as we never thought we would need to return our purchases. Please be on high alert, as a new visitor to Bangkok, the language barrier and lack of knowledge about the country makes you extremely vulnerable, we were lucky as we had a bad feeling early enough that minimised our losses but many people have been conned out of their hard earned cash by these people.

Please be aware of the company pictured above as they are scammers, a majority of taxi and Tuk Tuk drivers are all part of it as we found out. The name of this store is Premier Sapphire Factory Export Center Co. LTD (as pictured above) Address: 463/9-12 1st Floor, Look Luang Road, Mahanak, Dusit, Bangkok 10300 Thailand, if you search this address, it will have many hits for Bangkok gem scams except they already changed the name from Argosy which has been reported by many scam victims.

If you are planning to visit Thailand then please stay well clear of Bangkok as you are being watched as soon as you step foot in the place until you leave, if you feel the need to go there then please trust no one, I do not want to scare anyone but I just want to save anymore travellers from having their vacations ruined by these unscrupulous people. Please log onto www.bangkokscams.com which will identify companies that you will need to stay clear of.

I truly hope our story will stop these people from conning YOU.

The gadgets that can help you get in shape

Digital Detox

INTERESTING AND FUN

Eating, drinking and being merry is

tremendous fun, but unfortunately it

tends to leave its mark on our

waistlines - and that means most of

us enter the New Year carrying a few

extra pounds. Wouldn’t it be great if

It turns out that there are stacks of high-tech ways to get fit and fight the flab. The first step is to find out what shape you’re in, and for that you can use the Withings Wi-Fi scale. It’s not the cheapest bit of kit you’ll find at around £112, but you get a lot for your money: the scales don’t just weigh you but analyse you, working out your levels of body fat and lean muscle. That information can be stored securely online, enabling you to track your progress from any computer or even an iPhone.

you’re burning and whether you’re going to collapse any time soon, while the latter tracks your speed and heart rate.

Would you rather go for a swim? You’ll find gadgets a-plenty here too including Speedo’s Aquabeat (£55), which stores 1GB of music and the Finis Lap Track (£50), which you can use to record your lap times in the pool.

The problem with watersports is that you need water to do them - or at least, you did before the Human Touch came along. It’s a big investment at £349, but it does mimic surfing, snowboarding and skateboarding to boost your body’s core strength, toning up your abdominal muscles and helping to protect your back - and unlike the real thing, if you make a mistake you’re unlikely to break anything.

One of the most interesting fitness gadgets is the Ki Fit, an armband that monitors your metabolism and even your sleep patterns to build up a picture of your health. It’s quite expensive - £99.99 for a basic package including one year’s use of the Online Activity Manager website - but it’s had rave reviews.

If that all sounds a bit dull and worthy, don’t despair: fitness can be fun too. The superb Wii Fit turns Nintendo’s Wii console into a fun fitness centre, boosting your fitness as you do everything from step aerobics to ski jumping and kung fu. At the time of writing the latest version, Wii Fit plus, is around £75 including the essential Balance Board - but don’t forget, you’ll need a Wii console (£169) to use it.

The word iPhone crops up a lot when you talk about high-tech fitness: there are plenty of apps in the App Store that take advantage of the phone’s GPS system, tracking your steps and even monitoring your route. Our pick is the Nike+GPS (£1.99), which works on the iPhone and on

the iPod Touch to track where you run and moti-vate you to go further and faster. Similar apps are available for Android, Nokia and Windows Mo-bile phone, and you’ll find a huge range of fitness programmes - pedome-ters, diet guides, calorie counters, exercise re-gimes and so on - in each

platform’s App Store.

Adding fitness apps to your smartphone is usually cheap, but of course you don’t need a mobile phone to benefit from GPS tech-nology. Sat-nav experts Garmin make sev-eral GPS-based gadgets, including its Fore-runner range of running watches and its Edge devices for cyclists. The former tells you how you’re doing, how many calories

Back to Shoes! Getting your feet ready for

winter

D oes the thought of ditching your sandals make you wince? Sorry , like it or not, summer is official-ly over and its time to be sensible and get those shoes and socks back on. Scary isn’t it? Especial-

ly when you see the cracked thick skin around your heels and the peeling itchy skin between your toes. This is a good time of the year to take action so that your feet see you comfortably through the winter. First of all, tackle those heels; callused cracked heels are a real problem after weeks wearing backless or sling-back sandals. Just rub gently with a pumice stone after a shower or bath, then massage in a layer of foot cream; there are several creams available now specifically for this task and they are very effective, so give them a try. Pop some socks on and go to bed and your feet will feel wonderful in the morning. Athletes foot can still be a prob-lem at this time of year and causes flaky skin, redness and sometimes irritation between the toes, so you need to take decisive action! First of all, dry carefully between the toes after washing and ask your pharmacist or Podiatrist for an antifungal cream; always apply between all toes (not just the affected ones) for up to 10days. Continuing to dry carefully will help ensure you stay clear of further fungal attacks! There, ready for all winter can throw at you... just the chil-blains to worry about now! For further information or an appointment contact Helen Swindley at:

The Ivy Clinic 141-143 Trinity Avenue,

Llandudno (01492) 875939

A variety of antifungal creams and foot moisturisers are

Abarth 500C

I f you like your motoring with wind in the hair

and lashings of excitement, then the Abarth

500C will be right up your street. The maker –

Fiat Group’s performance arm – has just unveiled the

drop-top version of its potent little city car and we’ve

climbed behind the wheel.

Packing a 1.4-litre 16v turbo-charged engine with

140bhp, the 500C may look small but punches well

above its weight. That T-Jet unit is capable of propelling

the car to 60mph in just 8.1 seconds and on to a top

speed of 127mph – and all while you soak up the rays

with the top rolled back.

Abarth has stiffened the windscreen pillar to cope with

the fabric roof, which folds back electrically like a long

sunroof. It concertinas away, bunching up above the

rear tailgate when not in place. The problem is, with the

roof down, noise levels are high and the buffeting at

speeds the little Abarth is capable of reaching can be

uncomfortable. The electrical mechanism works quickly

and at town speeds can still be operated, but for fast

paced roads and motorways you’ll need the lid shut.

The 500c really is a true hot hatch though – it feels a lot

quicker than the 8.1 second to the 60mph time

suggests. On the road, two roarty exhausts sing the

car’s intentions and the engine has a pleasing growl to it

when stretched.

It grips superbly too and on a race track – where

professional drivers demonstrated to Autoblog what the

Abarth was really capable of – it was clear the car is

entertainingly quick.

But it’s not all good news. From launch only a semi-auto

flappy paddle gearbox will be available and sadly it’s not

up to the job. In automatic mode, changes are slow and

irritating. Flick the sport button on (a button you should

rarely turn off) and use the paddles sees things get a

little better – but you need to lift off the power every time

you change. And even then it’s still jerky. The good

news is a manual gearbox – which is good in the hard-

top Abarth 500 – will be available from November.

Despite those impressive performance figures, the 500C

is still quite frugal – it’ll do 43.4mpg on the combined

cycle and emits 151g/km. Specification is high too with

xenon headlights, parking sensors and Blue&Me

connectivity all standard.

Abarth told us that an Essesse performance upgrade will

be made available in November. This will boost power to

165bhp and reprogram the gearbox for faster shifts, but

we can’t help thinking the standard car needs the

upgrade already.

It really is hard to see past that annoying gearbox and

that’s a real shame as there’s little else wrong with the

£17,500 Abarth 500C.

It’s fast, comfortable inside and most importantly isn’t a

Mini Cooper S – and for buyers looking to stand out from

the crowd that could be just the hook Abarth needs to

find it homes.

reyhounds only have a short racing life. Once

they reach 3 1/2 to 5 yrs old (out of a natural life span of about 12 to 14 years) they are considered too slow to compete. Some go to new homes as pets, in accord-ance with the official policy of the National Greyhound Racing Club (NGRC) the industry’s governing body.

Some are kept and loved by those who raced them. Unfortunately many others simply vanish.

Greyhound racing is big business, attracting 3.5m people to its tracks each year, with millions more watching races on TV. Every year approximately £2.5 billion is bet on the sport and about £70 million goes to the government in tax.

Many greyhounds are kept in cramped conditions for much of their lives and are sometimes required to run several races a week. Three-quarters of the greyhounds racing in Britain are born in Ireland, where breeding and exporting them is a big enterprise. They are ready to compete at 16 months. The elite few that are fast enough for the open races carrying substantial prize money and kudos will be treasured and will eventually be put to stud. But most will be fit only for the graded races that make up most of the 71,000 run in Britain each year.

The dogs in the afternoon fixtures are just made to run and run and run. Then, when they go lame or get too old and lose a bit of speed, they are just disposed of.

After Racing While some dogs are loved and cared for by their owners, most go down a slippery slide from regulated National Greyhound Racing Club grounds to Independent grounds with little or no regulation or concern for the dogs. They may go to flapper tracks or illegal venues such as coursing. Then perhaps the dog pound or much worse. Some may be abandoned to roam the countryside or the streets of towns and cities to fend for themselves. They may be injured but very soon they will be starving. It costs money to put a dog to sleep and so very often they are disposed of by methods that would make most people sickened

and appalled. Some have been injected with bleach, others hung or beaten to death. As all racing Greyhounds have their ears tattooed, these are often cut off to prevent identification. There are many more horror stories.

Thousands are rescued each year, but they are only a small percentage of the number of dogs abandoned by those only inter-ested in profit or fame. There is so much to do

Reasons to Adopt a Greyhound The average age of a retired greyhound is around 4 yrs old alt-hough we often have very young dogs that have not made the grade at all. Greyhounds can live into their teens. Middle aged dogs make great pets for retired people. Their temperament is docile laid back and very gentle. They do not pull on the lead. Two twenty minute walks (on the lead) a day are enough. They require less exercise than the average dog. They are tall and shorthaired so tend not to get muddy and require little grooming. They can and do live with other pets, including cats. Greyhounds are undemand-ing and merely wish to be with you and be loved.

We are a small local charity working hard to find loving homes for abandoned Greyhounds and Sighthounds. We do not have major facilities and depend totally of the help of like-minded volunteers to foster and rehabilitate these wonderful hounds.

Have you thought about giving a home to a Greyhound or Lurcher?

Are you able to give some time to fundraising? Have you got any unwanted gifts or possessions that we might use as tombola prizes or sell to raise funds?
