We build Yenching Academy, the most ambitious

academic initiative Peking University (PKU) has

launched since the new centuryto be a leading

center for Chinese Studies in the world, and a global

hub of renowned scholars and talented students

from different national and cultural backgrounds

who are motivated to study humanities and social

sciences in a critical and interdisciplinary fashion,

and from both Chinese and global perspectives.

One cannot underestimate the impact by Peking

University on modern Chinese history and cultur-

al-intellectual formation. The University stood at the

center of China’ s New Culture Movement of 1919,

and has been an ardent advocate for democracyand science in China ever since. Today, the world

and mankind are facing unprecedented opportuni-

ties and daunting challenges. China, a country with

a quarter of the world’s population, has re-emerged

as a fast growing economy with increasing social

vitality and political influence. At this historical

conjuncture, Peking University bears even more

responsibility to be a beacon for free inquiry, criti-

cal thinking, and a bridge between China and the

rest of the world through the exchange of ideas

and cultivation of characters.

This arduous task can be achieved only by the

dedication of our entire academic community, and

especially by you-talented, committed, and ideal-

istic young people. Let's endeavor to understand

China through the world, and vice versa. And,

more importantly, together let's change the world

for the better.

The Yenching Academy (YCA) is designed for tal-

ented students in China and around the world.

Drawing inspiration from classical Chinese academy

(Shuyuan) as well as the Rhodes Scholars’ Program,

the Yenching Academy, cultivates future leaders in a

flattened, but rather more complex, world.

The Yenching Scholars will be taught by faculty

recruited globally for the Academy as well as by

current PKU faculty jointly appointed with existing

PKU schools and departments. Furthermore, this

full-time faculty will be supplemented by a steady

flow of prominent international visiting scholars

and senior scholars from Peking University who

serve as guest speakers.

the idyllic Jing-Yuan Courtyard

is the focal point of student life.

The Yenching Academy is located at the

Jing-Yuan Courtyard on the Peking University

campus. With the premises of Jing-Yuan

Courtyard over 40,000 square meters, 6 histor-

ical buildings in the Courtyard have been ren-

ovated to provide state-of-the-art teaching and

learning facilities. Yenching Scholars will live,

learn, collaborate, and engage in an exclusive

“community of scholars” .
