1.0 Introduction
Two random samples of African children, age seven to sixteen, were evaluated by their parents and teachers – adults who
knew them well. The first group was assessed in the mid 1970s, and a comparable group was surveyed in the late 1980s.
Over that decade and a half, there was a worsening in children’s emotional intelligence. This result was the same across
all economic groups. Researchers involved in this research revealed that the decline in children’s basic emotional
competencies seems to be worldwide. The most telling signs of this are seen in rising rates among young people of
problems such as despair, alienation, drug abuse, crime and violence, depression or eating disorders, unwanted
pregnancies, bullying and dropping out of school. What this portends for public governance, workplace, and the family
front is quite troubling. The generation that is falling behind in emotional intelligence is entering the workplace; they are
applying for leadership positions in public spaces, and becoming husbands and wives on the family front. The outcome;
wars and threat of wars, increased divorce rate both in third and first world nations and religious spaces, organizations
are expanding into emerging markets with leaders who are socially inept, the list is unending...
The result of the research mentioned above is quite instructive. The children that were studied in the late 1980s went
through the educational system in their societies, but the structure and framework for learning in these learning
institutions impact only on the children’s intelligence quotient, not on their emotional intelligence. The outcome is
brilliance but socially inept graduate, especially for the life ahead.
Indeed, academic intelligence does not prepare one for after school life’s examination. The brightest among them can founder
on the shoals of unbridled passions, and unruly impulses.
As a first-class Seventh - day Adventist institution, building servant leaders for a better world, Babcock University has
graduated leaders who are already leading in several industries worldwide. To continue to churn out potential leaders
from Babcock University, it is imperative to further strengthen these student’s emotional intelligence competencies. These
competencies are critical for creating positive change in both private and public sector folds in the nation and beyond.

There are emotional intelligence competences that position anyone for star performance in the workplace and family
front. Aligning oneself with these competences is just the beginning of greater success for life after school. The dearth of
these emotionally intelligent leaders is the foundational problem of this present generation.
Potentflow Consulting proposes; Youth Emotional Competence Empowerment Program (YECEP). The concept behind
this is to help facilitate the dissemination, assimilation, and application of these competencies, before graduation, in hope
that the learnt capabilities will make them stand out in life. The programme will employ a two throng approach, that is,
there will be an interactive-training session and a coaching session. The coaching sessions will be led by Reuben
Onwubiko, Director Marketing GSK West Africa, and a brand consultant. Seyi Wright, MD/CEO L & V Ltd, and author
of the books; Choose to Make a Difference, and Olankunle Soriyan, the principal transformation strategist of the Olakunle
Soriyan Company, and the author of several books; No Such Thing as Weakness, No Such Thing As A Problem, , and
several other. Kunle Soriyan is into nation Building. He currently hosts “SMOOTH LIFE” on Smooth 98.1FM. Pastor Jide

Phase Two
Coaching Sessions
The coaching sessions will be led by Reuben Onwubiko, Seyi Wright, Olakunle Soriyan, , Jide Williams and Titi Adebayo.
Coaching sessions will be done privately, or coaching a group of students. The approach will entail;
Each participant spending time with a coach on an agreed day. Or,
Each coach coaching a group of assigned participants together
The coaching sessions will be done only during the long holidays (July to September). There should be a deliberate gap of
at most five months between the interactive sections (training) and the coaching sessions. Each student/participants will
also have the name and contact of an assigned coach. The student is expected to contact and meet with his or her coach
three times within the holiday time window.
The Coaching Process
Step One: Shortlisted names and phone numbers of student/participants will be forwarded to the coaches. The
Emotional IntelDoc™ tool will be used as a basis for discussion.
Step Two: Key /target competence that need to be worked on are agreed upon, this is to ascertain that key areas for
change are focused on. The Emotional IntelDoc™ tool will guide both coach and participants
Step Three: Design an action plan to build these agreed upon capacities, and discuss with student
Step Four: Develop an on-going follow-up process. This entails reviewing results of areas targeted and repeating the
process until coach is sure that the student has taken ownership of his or her own capacity building task.
