So Many Reasons to Give!By Ashley Cabradilla

With more than half of us needing blood during our lives, maintaining a safe and adequate community blood supply is important to everyone. By donating blood, you’ll help ensure that it is available for all who need it, and you’ll help save up to three lives. Everyday in Hawai‘i, hundreds of patients count on volunteer blood donors for their very survival. The donation process is safe and usually takes about an hour. There is some paperwork, a confidential interview, and a mini physical, but the actual collection of blood takes only five to eight minutes. If you are interested in donating, and would like to make an appointment for the upcoming Blood Drive, please contact Ashley Cabradilla at 921-6972 or by e-mail at [email protected].

married for 30 years and has three daughters. When Hung is not working, he enjoys yardwork, playing ping pong, and teaching table tennis every Friday at Kilauea Park. If you are interested in learning table tennis, Hung would love to teach you the sport! Raising bonsai plants is another hobby that Hung enjoys, and in the future, he hopes to participate in bonsai plant shows and sell his plants. Hung wants his coworkers to know that he enjoys working with them because they all work well together.

Nora Weatherwax General ManagerNora joined Outrigger in 1980 and has worked at the Outrigger Waikiki and the OHANA Waikiki East as Front Desk Clerk/Cashier and also as Manager on Duty at the OHANA Waikiki East. In 1999, Nora was promoted to Hotel Manager and worked in that capacity at the OHANA Waikiki Village, OHANA Coral Seas, OHANA Royal Islander, OHANA Reef Lanais, OHANA Maile Sky Court, and OHANA Waikiki Malia (OMH). Currently, Nora is OMH General Manager. For Nora, working at Outrigger has been fun and challenging, and she fondly recalls when her sisters Frani, Aileen, Leslie, and Puna also worked for Outrigger. Nora comments that she saw Outrigger grow from a family-owned business to a large international company and enjoys working for a company that is supportive of family, as her son, two daughters, and four grandchildren are very important to her. Her philosophy on life is from Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope.” In her free time, Nora enjoys cooking, going to church on Sundays at New Hope and serving as a volunteer for the Children’s Ark, spending time at the beach, and watching her grandchildren play sports. Nora hopes to travel to Europe in the near future and wishes God’s blessings on all members of the Outrigger family.

John Wong General MaintenanceJohn joined Outrigger in 1980 as a Laundry Attendant at the Outrigger Prince Kuhio. He was promoted to Laundry Supervisor and Assistant Laundry Manager. When the Laundry department closed, John transferred to Housekeeping as an Assistant Housekeeper, and today, John works at the Outrigger Reef on the Beach as General Maintenance. John recalls the union picketing for two weeks at the Outrigger Prince Kuhio, when Outrigger purchased the property.

He also recalls the major renovation at the Outrigger Reef on the Beach, which kept the Maintenance department very busy. John enjoys working at Outrigger because everyone in his department gets along and helps each other out. He and his wife Susan have been married 30 years and have one son and two daughters. When John isn’t working, he enjoys walking to stay healthy and doing repairs at home. John hopes to travel to Vietnam, Hong Kong, and China in the future.

Clare is currently a Room Attendant at the Outrigger Little Hastings Street Resort & Spa. Her daily interaction with both guests and staff is outstanding and very much appreciated. Clare willingly gives that extra helping hand and does so with sincerity. She is always happy and smiling; you’d never know she was under any pressure, as we know that’s the case when opening a new resort. Ironmen and Women Splash Down at Outrigger Little Hastings Street

By Alex Chapman

When some of Australia’s hottest ironmen and women visited Noosa to launch the Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain Ironman summer series, they naturally stayed at Noosa’s hottest new five-star resort, Outrigger Little Hastings Street Resort & Spa. And when they weren’t on call for filming and interviews, the athletes, including ironman legends and household names Guy Leech and Trevor Hendy, enjoyed some timeout poolside. Guy, who is also the Series Director in addition to his legendary form as a three-time Coolangatta Gold champion said, “When we were looking for a place to accommodate our athletes before the launch of this summer’s Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain Ironman series, there was really only one place I looked. The Outrigger Little Hastings Street Resort & Spa is such a magic place to stay and is set in such a tranquil setting that it’s perfect for the athletes to get away and relax before they race.” Five-time Nutri-Grain Ironman Series champion Shannon Eckstein also gave the resort the ‘thumbs up.’ “I stay in a lot of different hotels both in Australia and all over the world, and

Outrigger Little Hastings Street is right up there with the best of them…the staff were friendly, the rooms were amazing, and it is all just a short stroll into the heart of Noosa. I wouldn’t hesitate in coming back.” he added. Noosa will play a major role in the revamped Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain summer series by hosting the final showdown at Main Beach on January 9, televised live nationally through Network TEN. It will also air in one of Noosa’s core inbound markets, New Zealand, with the series also replayed throughout select Asian countries. This is a great coup for Noosa, and the branding exposure within our key domestic markets during the summer months is beyond measure. Noosa’s selection to host the final round was negotiated by the team at Tourism Noosa, and as a member, we are delighted with the outcome. The final round in Noosa is destined to go down to wire, as 20 of Australia’s best ironmen and women compete for a share of the $300,000 in prize money.

Celebrating Princess Ka‘iulaniBy Alan Naito

For the past several years, October 16 has been a special day of celebration for Outrigger and the OHANA Waikiki East. A light morning shower didn’t damper the event as a handful of employees took time away from their normal day-to-day duties to honor Princess Ka‘iulani at the Princess Ka‘iulani Triangle Park, on what would have been her 135th birthday. Dozens of guests and spectators stopped to witness this blessed ceremony, as several Hawaiian Royal Societies groups, including Daughters and Sons of Hawaiian Warriors/Ka Māmakakaua, ‘Ahahui Ka‘iulani, Royal Order of Kamehameha, ‘Ahahui Ka‘ahumanu, Hale o Nā Ali‘i o Hawai‘i, and various representatives from Outrigger participated in a short procession to adorn Princess Ka‘iulani’s statue with fresh fragrant flowers and maile and ti leaves, as stories from her life were retold. This event was not only a celebration but also a reflection of Princess Ka‘iulani’s life. Coline Aiu, President of the Hawaiian society ‘Ahahui Ka‘iulani, said Ka‘iulani was called “Hawai‘i’s hope” because she was the only child born to the Kalākaua dynasty. She also recalled that Princess Ka‘iulani lived on the ‘Āinahau Estate, where the OHANA Waikiki East now stands. She rode her pony, Fairy, on Kalākaua Avenue, surfed off Waikīkī Beach, and watched her peacocks on the property. She went to England for school at the age of 13 and for preparation to become the nation’s next queen, but during that time, the monarchy was overthrown. She died of a cold on the Big Island at age 23, but some believe she died of a broken heart because she lost her kingdom and family. As always, this event would not have been possible

without the hard work of our Outrigger ‘ohana. Special thanks to: Alan White, Luana Maitland, Kathy Hansberry, Nancy Daniels, Maile Okuma, Denise Torres, Clayton Umuiwi, Yuet Oy Au, Joselyn Valenzuela, Hyuk Nam, and Florante Ravago for making this yearly celebration possible.

Honoring More of Our Longtime EmployeesContinued from page 1

their coworkers, they are the reason I receive so many cards, letters, e-mails, instant messages and even a few “tweets” every month from travelers who have stayed at one of our properties. Cindy Yip joined our Housekeeping department in 1975, just as we were finishing up the construction of both the OHANA Waikiki East and the OHANA Waikiki West hotels. It was a hectic time. We had simultaneously leased the land for those two properties, plus the land for the Outrigger Waikiki in 1963, along with a commitment to build three hotels. The Outrigger Waikiki was completed first in 1967, but the work at OHANA Waikiki East and Waikiki West continued on. I am almost certain that Cindy found herself in the middle of some of that construction during her days as part

of our ‘ohana. Since then, I often see Cindy at work either on the room floors or in the Housekeeping department during morning meetings or lunch breaks. Hung Da Ngo joined our ‘ohana five years later, and I am sure he has also seen his share of construction too. In Waikiki, there are always construction and renovation projects going on, as we try to keep our many properties in that resort area fresh and up to date. Hung has been putting on the finishing touches with his paintbrush for 30 years. Nora Weatherwax is one of the five Stillman sisters who have been part of our ‘ohana for many, many years. Nora has steadily acquired new skills along the way, advancing and assuming more and more responsibilities and now carries the title of General Manager at the OHANA Waikiki Malia.

John Wong joined our ‘ohana when we purchased the Prince Kuhio Hotel. He was part of the very hard-working and loyal crew that operated the full-service commercial laundry in the basement. I distinctly recall going into that laundry and shaking the hands of every worker there on the morning of our first day of ownership of that hotel. I am not one hundred percent sure if John Wong was working that day but most likely he was. I’ll be in Waikiki next week, and I hope to be able to shake his hand once again, along with all of the others mentioned in this article. Congratulations to each of you, Cindy, Hung, Nora, and John on reaching your 30- and 35-year milestones. Mahalo – from the bottom of my heart!
