The 2002 Johannesburg World Summit on Sustainable Development has highlighted

the pressing need to change our consumption and production patterns. Transparent

and reliable information on the environmental quality of products is necessary to

help consumers make the right choices. The EU Eco-label fulfils that role as it is the

guide to Greener products in the European market.

The European Eco-label celebrates its 10th anniversary this year and the

European Commission is organising an event for all those involved to bring the

Flower closer to consumers, business and the media.

Since the year 2000 the number of Eco-labelled items sold has risen by 300%. The

challenge we now face is to build on this progress and further raise the profile of the

“Flower”. To this end I call on all businesses who care for the environment to put the

“Flower” on their products and I urge all consumers to look for the “Flower” when making

their choice.

The EU Eco-label or “Flower” is a unique cer-

tification scheme aimed at helping European

consumers to distinguish greener, more envi-

ronmentally friendly products, excluding food

and medicine.

Over the past ten years, the “Flower” has

become a European-wide symbol for greener

products, providing simple and accurate guid-

ance to consumers.

All products bearing the “Flower” have been

checked by independent bodies for compliance

with strict ecological and performance criteria.

There are currently nineteen different product

groups, and already more than 120 licences

have been awarded for several hundred

products.

EU Eco-Label Essentials

The EU Eco-label is administered by the

European Union Eco-labelling Board (EUEB)

and receives the support of the European

Commission, all Member States of the

European Union and the European Economic

Area (EEA). The Eco-labelling Board includes

stakeholders such as industry, environmental

protection groups and consumer organisations.

Five steps to SuccessGive your product a credible sign of environmental excellence. Apply now for the EU Eco-label.

Submitting your application

Select the category for which your application

is sought and contact the relevant National

Competent Body (CB) (http://europa.eu.int/comm/envi-

ronment/ecolabel/general/competentbodies.htm).

They will analyse your needs and provide you

with all the necessary information and technical

support.

Evaluation of your application

Your application will be assessed against the

relevant ecological and performance criteria.

Your manufacturing facility may also be

inspected for compliance.

Receiving the EU Eco-label

If your product meets these criteria you will be

authorised to use the EU Eco-label on your

product and in advertising. A fee is charged

for the right to use the EU Eco-label, although

there are reductions for small and medium-

sized enterprises and companies from devel-

oping countries.

Compliance monitoring

To maintain the integrity of the EU Eco-label, a

Competent Body (CB) may continue to in-

spect factories and carry out product tests.

This ongoing process provides customers

with the assurance that the products they buy

continue to reflect environmental excellence.

Promoting your efforts

Once the EU Eco-label has been awarded,

your efforts are promoted via advertising and

communication initiatives. Check with your

National Competent Body (CB) for available

supporting measures.

European consumers are ready to buy greener

products more often. The environmental quality of

products has become more important than ever

before.

Within this climate of increased environmental

awareness, the EU Eco-label highlights the most

environmentally friendly everyday consumer

goods. This transparent and reliable symbol of

environmental excellence allows your European

customers to easily identify products of high envi-

ronmental quality and therefore adds value to your

sales within the European market.
