The Arts: Visual and Media Arts

This e-book resource package has been structured for Years 3 and 4 students, and it will engage,

inspire, and enrich all students through learning and assessment. This teacher resource package

will be in line with the Student resource package to help scaffold their learning experiences.

Both the teacher and student resource package were designed to cover two strands of the

Australian Curriculum: The Arta, Visual and Media Arts. Throughout the packages the activities

provided will focus on the visual and Media contents.

The Australian Curriculum for the arts focus on two key strands of making and responding. They

refer to the following;

Making- Making includes learning about and using knowledge, skills, techniques, processes,

materials, and technologies to explore arts practices and make artworks that communicate ideas

and intentions. Making also engages student’s cognition, imagination, senses and emotions in

conceptual and practical ways and involves them thinking kinaesthetically, critically and

creatively.

Responding- Responding refers to providing opportunities for students as both artists and

audiences, exploring, responding to, analysing, interpreting and critically evaluating artworks

they experience. Responding also allows the students to understand, appreciate, critique and

reflect upon artwork they have created and the artwork created by others.

The Arts Learning Focus: Texture: The Element of Art

Learning outcomes for Visual and Media Arts:

▪ Students explore ideas and artworks from cultures, social, and times including artwork by

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists in relation to texture.

▪ Students are introduced to the element of art which for this is texture and experiment with

a variety of different ways to create texture, by using a range of materials and techniques.

▪ Students explore and experiment with visual conventions such as texture to develop an

individual approach to a theme or subject matter.

The following achievement standards defines the expected learning requirements for students

participating in the arts. They include:

Achievement Standard- by the end of year 4, Visual Arts:

• Students describe and discuss similarities and differences between artworks they make,

present, and view.

• Students discuss how they and others use visual conventions in artworks

• Students plan and make artworks that are inspired by artworks they experience

• Students use visual conventions, techniques, and processes to communicate their ideas.

Achievement Standard- by the end of year 4, Media Arts:

• Students describe and discuss similarities and differences between media artworks they

make, and view.

• Students discuss how and why they and others use images sound and text to make and

present media artworks.

• Students collaborate to use story principles, time, space, and technologies to make and

share media artworks that communicate ideas to an audience.

Cross-Curriculum learning opportunities are embedded into this unit, and includes

achievements and engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and

including artwork from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists.

The table below is in relation to the strands, content descriptions from the Australian Curriculum.
