January 2017

Martyrs‟ Day 2017

o Martyrs‘ Day is celebrated on 30 January every year to pay tribute to

Mahatma Gandhi on his death anniversary.

o In India, several days are declared as Martyrs‘ Day (Shaheed Diwas) in

the honour of those who laid their lives for the nation.

o January 30 is considered as Martyr‘s Day as it marks the assassination

of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi.

o Gandhi was killed in 1948 by Nathuram Godse.

World leprosy day observed

o World Leprosy Day is observed internationally on January 30 or its nearest

Sunday to increase the public awareness of the Leprosy or Hansen's Disease.

o The day was initiated in 1954 by French philanthropist and writer, Raoul

Follereau, as a way to raise global awareness.

o The date for World Leprosy Day was chosen to coincide with the anniversary of

Mahatma Gandhi‘s assassination.

Brahmaputra Literary Festival Begins

o The 3 day long Brahmaputra Literary festival began in Guwahati,Assam on Jan

28.The festival has been by the State Government jointly with the National

Book Trust.

o The festival would see the participation of about 150 authors from 10 countries.

„Bharat Parv‟ Festival at Red Fort

o Bharat Parv, a national festival showcasing the country‘s diverse culture,

cuisines, handicrafts and catch glimpses of a progressive India was inaugurated

by Dr. Mahesh Sharma, Minister of State for Tourism and Culture at Red Fort,

Delhi.

o Bharat Parv event is being organized by the GOI at the Red Fort, Delhi from

26th to 31st January 2017, as part of the Republic Day 2017 Celebrations.

Niti Aayog‟s ATL mission

o Niti Aayog will organise a two-day event next month for schools that have

been selected to set up Atal Tinkering Labs (ATLs) aimed at inculcating a

culture of scientific innovation into the young minds.

o The event will be held on February 20-21st February

o Under the programme, Niti Aayog has targeted to set up a total of 500 such

labs across the country in selected schools.

National Voters‟ Day

o "Elections are celebrations of democracy. They communicate the will of the

people, which is supreme in a democracy,‖ PM said.

o The ECI will celebrate the seventh National Voters‘ Day across the country

today, for enhancing the participation of the citizens in the electoral process.

o January 25 is marked as the foundation day of the Election Commission,

which came into being in 1950.

National Girl Child Day

o The National Girl Child Day will be celebrated on 24 January at a special

function organized by the Ministry of Women & Child Development in New

Delhi.

o The occasion shall be marked by release of The National Plan of Action for

Thousands witness Teppotsavam

o On the banks of Godavari in Bhadrachalam a multitude of devotees witnessed

the colourful ‗Teppotsavam‘ (float festival) amid royal opulence in the famous

pilgrim centre.

o CM K. Chandrasekhar Rao‘s wife and other family members were among

those who watched the spectacular ‗celestial boat ride‘.

o The processional idols of Lord Rama and his consort Sita, made five circular

International Kite Festival Begins

o The international Kite festival started in Ahmedabad at Sabarmati River

Front.

o Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani inaugurated the festival.

o About 51 kite fliers from 8 different states while more than 100 kite fliers from

31 countries are participating in this week-long mega event.

o Kites with different shapes, shades and colors are the main attraction.\

o PM Modi inaugurates the 14th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in Bengaluru. Visiting

o World Day of Social Justice is a day recognizing the need to promote efforts to

Festival celebrates natural heritage

o France based UNESCO organized the 2 day Nature Fest at the World Heritage

PM extends greetings on World Radio Day

o Prime Minister Narendra Modi has extended his greetings to the nation on the

Goa to host film festival on disability

o International ―We Care Film Festival‖ on disability issues will be organized in

the Asia Pacific region & Oman.

o The Disability Rights Association of Goa in association with Brotherhood, New

Delhi will take the festival to schools & colleges in Goa from Feb 6 to 11.

o With 900 short films & documentaries, the festival has reached out to more than

1.5 lakh people in India, Mauritius, Dubai & France.

Bengaluru International Film Festival

o The 9th edition of Bengaluru International Film Festival has begun and was

inaugurated at Vidhana Soudha. The film festival will go on till February 9 and

will also be held in Mysore.

o La Vache (One Man and His Cow) by Algerian film-maker Mohamed

Hamidi was screened for the audience as the inaugural film.

o The event will show over 240 films from as many as 60 countries.

Surajkund International Crafts Mela 2017

o Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar inaugurated the 31st Surajkund

International Crafts Mela in Gurgaon, Haryana.

o It is known as Cashless Mela‗because all stakeholders have been provided option

to opt for cashless transactions.

o 21 countries are expected to be participating in the fair.

o The fair will end on 15th February.

World Wetlands Day celebrated

o The 2 February each year is World Wetlands Day, marking the date of the

adoption of the Convention on Wetlands on 2 February 1971 in Ramsar, Iran.

o Established to raise awareness about the value of wetlands for humanity and the

planet, WWD was celebrated for the first time in 1997.

o The theme for this year is 'Wetlands for Disaster Risk Reduction'.

President to open „Udyanotsav‟ in Feb

o President, Pranab Mukherjee will open the annual Udyanotsav‗ of the

Rashtrapati Bhavan on February 04, 2017.

o The Mughal Gardens will remain open for general public from February 05 to

March 12, 2017 (except on Mondays) between 0930 hrs to 1600 hrs.

o Members of the public will also be able to visit the Spiritual Garden, Herbal

World Environment Conference

o India has the highest number of tuberculosis (TB) patients globally, about 25% of

o The President of India, will visit Haryana (Sonipat) on March 18, 2017 where he

o UNESCO will screen Rahul V. Chittella‘s short film ―Azaad‖ as a part of

World Press Freedom Day event that is scheduled to be held from May 1-4

o May 3 is celebrated as World Press Freedom Day every year to celebrate

the fundamental principles of press freedom.

World Intellectual Property Day

o World Intellectual Property Day is observed annually on 26 April.

o The event was established by the World Intellectual Property Organization

in 2000 to raise awareness regarding patents, trademarks etc.

o The theme for 2017 is, "Innovation – Improving Lives".It coincides with

the date on which the Convention Establishing the World Intellectual
