HAMPSHIRE FEDERATION YEAR BOOK 2015-2016 Introduction

The ‘Federation Year Book' has been issued previously, in 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2013. These

Editions were well received and it is hoped that Society Members, Society /Club Secretaries and anyone

connected with philately in Hampshire and beyond will find this new Edition equally useful.

This Year Book for 2015 - 2016 for the first time will produced on electronic format only and will be

available to view on HPF Website. No paper copies will be produced but pdf format copies can be

provided in cases of need.

The information contained in this ‘Year Book' is as accurate as possible at the time of going to press and

depends on the level of information provided by individuals, societies and society secretaries. Feedback is

essential to ensure the Year Book reflects the current situation so if you have information or comments

please do contact me.

Hampshire Federation Bulletin Editor. January 2015

The May 2015 revision is occasioned by the sad passing of Tom Fowler who has been a staunch supporter

and contributor to the Hampshire Philatelic Federation over many years and most active as editor of the

Handbook , The Bulletin and the HAMPEX programme.

The October 2015 revision records the sad death of our Patron of very long standing and a great philatelist,

Francis Kiddle RDP., FRPSL. Francis held a number of positions in a number of philatelic UK and world

bodies including Royal Philatelic Society London, the British Philatelic Trust, the FIP Philatelic Literature

Commission, and the FIP Revenue Commission. He was many times a philatelic judge at FIP Exhibitions

and at exhibitions in the United Kingdom and elsewhere in the world, and was Curator of the Perkins

Bacon Archive held by the Royal Philatelic Society London until his death.

HAMPSHIRE PHILATELIC FEDERATION—MISSION AND OBJECTIVES

Mission

To support and promote the interests of philatelists in Hampshire and adjacent counties who are members of the Philatelic Societies affiliated to the Federation.

Objectives

- give leadership in philatelic matters pertinent to members of the Federation; and promote the

interests of members and Societies at National levels

- communicate to all members by means of regular publication(s)

- hold at least one Convention per year with participation by dealers in stamps and postal history,

and participation by Specialist Societies.

- invite competition for Federation Awards; by affiliated Societies and members of affiliated

Societies :

o The Howard White Inter-society Competition

o The Jan Kaluski Competition - 32 sheets competition (individual members)

o The Hampshire Single Frame Competition (individual members)

- provide encouragement and guidance to those members wishing to improve their standard of

exhibition and level of achievement in competitions.

meetings.

- assist with the increase of membership in affiliated societies with special emphasis in encouraging

junior members.

- ensure that the Federation Council and Committee continue to find the best people for the official

positions: and to conduct its affairs in a cost effective manner to the benefit of affiliated societies

and members.

It gives me great pleasure to introduce this, the first on-line only, edition of the Hampshire Philatelic Federation Year Book.

Often the Year Book is a one-time-only use document! It is (hopefully) of great use to the society secretary and to the programme secretary. For everyone else – it’s there if necessary. At last all but one society contact has email (and thus access to the internet) so your committee decided earlier in 2014 that this 2015-2016 edition should be available only on line. I’m sure you will let us know if the decision turns out to be a problem for you.

I first started computer programming at Southampton University in 1965, so I have grown up with “IT”. I know many have only come to appreciate the value of computers and the internet much later in life. For many this has come by way of the tablet or the smart phone rather than directly via a computer. Knowing that the internet and ubiquitous communications devices would arrive I have pressed long and hard for the Federation and philatelic societies to embrace the internet to the full.

My introduction to collecting stamps occurred in about 1953 and continued until I discovered rock and roll! To the horror and annoyance of my Uncle, who had supported my endeavours, I sold the whole lot to a stamp shop in Christmas Steps in Bristol and bought my first Cliff Richard LP with the proceeds. My introduction to the concept of buyers’ market and sellers’ market came early on – and at great disadvantage!

It was not until I was living and working in the USA in 1980 that I became interested once more in stamps. Initially to ‘connect to home’ I started to receive first day covers from the Royal Mail with the excuse that I wanted to introduce my two daughters to the hobby that had played a big part in teaching me about flags, countries and continents through the details at the top of each album page. Alas, they didn’t show much interest – playing softball and going to gymnastics proved more to their liking. But I was hooked. My wife saw that there was a stamp club advertised in the local newspaper and I started attend-ing meetings and learning a lot about US stamps.

Upon returning to Britain I continued to collect and joined the (now defunct) Romsey and District Society. The chairman of the day quickly relinquished his second role as “HPF Rep” and catapulted me, still very much the philatelic novice, into meetings in a dingy room in Winchester. I have been an HPF committee officer ever since – for some thirty years!

Collecting US stamps proved to have its limits – the cheap and easy ones are easy to find, then all of a sudden one has to pay big bucks for a small piece of paper to fill that space. After casting about a bit for a solution I decided that collecting stampless covers would be more rewarding at smaller outlay. How wrong that turned out to be! But I have amassed a collection of covers demonstrating routes and rates of mail between the USA and Great Britain spanning 1773 to almost the present day.

I could not have learned what I know today about this fairly specific area without the help and encouragement from other collectors in that field, together with their books on the subject. Unsurprisingly, most of them were Americans, as there is not too much interest in this country, given that there is a whole British Commonwealth to deal with. I started out corresponding by airmail letter, but quickly found that some of the Americans had email addresses. Soon we were able to send scanned images too. That really improved the turnaround of our conversations. Through them I was introduced to US specialised societies and also US auction houses dealing in the covers I craved.

Initially I joined the US Postal Classics Society of America and the American Stamp Collectors Club of Great Britain. Over time, as I realised that other specialities intersected with mine I joined the Postal History Society, the Crash Mail Society, the Postage Due Mail Study Group, the TPO and Seapost Society and only latterly, the Royal Philatelic Society. If I wanted to learn more about an area then I needed to interact with the people who specialised in that area. I know that some collectors say that they just can’t stand joining yet another society and that’s because it is time consuming to give fair attention to all. But joining a few that really contribute to your own interest, and to which you can give something back, is well worth the effort.

The terrible thing is that even after thirty years at this, I still have an unfilled wants list! But fortunately I can now subscribe to online auction sites and browse catalogues from the relative comfort of my allotted corner of the dining room. Happy internet hunting!
