Information for Parents


KS4Options

The QES KS4 curriculum is founded

on principles• The needs of the pupils

come first

• Breadth and balance

• Maximum choice

• Limited compulsion

• Flexibility of provision


KS4Options

Turbulence in the system

• Subjects teaching new specifications from Sept 2017

• New specifications are “more challenging” and “strengthened”

• English Language: no speaking and listening

• New GCSEs in English and Maths introduced Sept 2015 with extra teaching time

New GCSEs

• In most subjects for this cohort

• All linear – exams at the end of 2 years of study

• Many with no coursework or controlled assessment

• Increased content

• No speaking and listening within the English grade

• Higher level of difficulty

• Graded 1-9 ( 9 being highest and beyond the level of A*)

• The new “pass” is level 5 – the top third of the old C grade and the bottom two thirds of the B

• De-coupling of AS and A2

• Huge emphasis on “facilitating” subjects

• Take 5 GCSEs as part of the

compulsory core of English, Maths and

Science

• Have 5 additional choices to add to their

• Pupils wanting to study 3 separate sciences use one of their options to create the additional time

The English Baccalaureate ( E-Bacc)

Pupils to attain a good pass in:

• Maths

• 2 of the Sciences ( Double Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Computer Science)

• A language (French, Spanish, German or Latin)

• A Humanity ( History, World History, Geography)
