World population growthThe worlds population is rapidly

growing. It is currently 7.6 billion people and is expected to reach 10

billion people by 2050. The most rapid growth began after

1950. This is known as the population explosion.

High income countries (HIC’s)population growth is fairly low and stable in rich developed countries.Low income countries (LIC’s) and

Newly emerging economies (NEE’s)Population growth is rapid in poorer,

developing countries.

The main reason for rapid population growth in poorer countries is a high

birth rate and a falling death rate (more people being born than

dying). This causes a rapid natural increase in population.

Rural to urban migrationRural to urban migration is the movement of people from poorer countryside areas

to cities. Push factors are things that force you to leave the countryside and

Pull factors attract you to the city.

Slum housing in IndiaMany people who migrate to

cities like Mumbai in India are uneducated, have few

possessions and no money. To begin their new life they

have to build their own illegal, home made houses, often on poor land, steep slopes or swamps. These

areas are known as slums or squatter settlements in India

Conditions in slums are very poor. For example;Lack of running waterNo sewers so disease spreads and the area smellsNo rubbish or waste collectionPoor electricity suppliesSevere overcrowdingHigh crime ratesFew proper jobsPoor roads and accessibility

Some slum areas are improved over time withNew roads and transportBetter services like waterSchools and health clinicsImproved housingA sewage system Better electricity supplies

Urbanisation As world population grows millions of people migrate to cities in search

of jobs and a better life. This is called urbanisation. Urbanisation

causes cities to grow rapidly.

ChinaChina is a very rapidly urbanising country in Asia with a huge economy. China has many major global companies. You may own a phone made by Huawei!

Capital city Beijing Total population – 1.43 billion peopleUrban population – 810 millionRural population – 633 millionChina’s GDP (annual wealth) = 13.60 trillion US$

Over 50% of the worlds population now live and work in cities

MegacitiesA megacity has a population of more than 10 million people. Over 50% of

megacities are located in Asia

Urbanisation is occurring rapidly in countries in Asia because the

continent is rapidly developing and becoming richer.

This means countries in Asia are creating lots of jobs and industry in their cities. Many people from the countryside (rural) migrate to cities

(urban) in search of work and a better life.

The top five megacities in the world have massive populations. The top 3

are all in Asia

Tokyo – Japan – 37.5 millionDelhi – India – 28.5 million

Shanghai – China – 25.6 millionSao Paulo – Brazil 21.7 million

Mexico city – Mexico 21.6 million

There are 44 countries in Asia4.4 billion people live in Asia

The largest countries by population are China (1.43 billion) and India (1.35 billion)

The Yangtze River (China) is 3915 miles long Mount Everest is 8,849m high

RURL AREASFew paid jobsDrought kills cropsLimited healthcareBoredomRemotenessFew schoolsLimited clean water

URBAN AREASJob opportunitiesReliable food supplyAccess to hospitalsEntertainmentBetter transportChance of education Better water supply

Dharavi in Mumbai is the biggest slum in India. 1 million people live in just 1 square mile

Some people who migrate to cities in Asia quickly improve their lives, but many people end up living in terrible conditions with poor jobs and a low quality of life.
