Year 12 Outdoor Education General Exmouth Expedition

It was the time of year again for our favourite Year 12 Outdoor Education expedition to Exmouth. We departed Perth bright and early on Saturday morning, heading to our first stop for the night in Carnarvon, before traveling through to Exmouth on Sunday. We had our first night in the beautiful Cape Range National Park at Bungalup campsite, before pulling in to the magical Pilgramunna camp site, where we set up on the beach front for the night. Day two we were off to enjoy a snorkel at Oyster Stacks and Turquoise Bay, with lunch at Sandy Bay. Our last night was spent at South Trealla, and the next morning we paddled the last leg through to Lakeside for our final snorkel, finishing up our 40km paddle at Neds Camp Site.

We were fortunate enough to see an incredible range of marine life that the Ningaloo reef has to offer, from White-tip reef sharks, Humpback Whales, Turtles, Cow-tail Sting Rays, Blue Spotted Sting Rays, Octopus, Parrot fish, Flute-mouth fish, Butterfly fish, Goat-fish, Rock Cod, Trigger fish and Sail-fin Catfish. This expedition enabled our students to make wonderful memories.

This was an extensive expedition for staff and students being away for 7 days. Our class couldn’t have done it without the help of Miss Shawn Billam and Mr Jim Gullen. A massive thank you to them! Good luck to the Year 12s, as they approach their last few weeks of College life. I hope Outdoor Education has taught you many skills for life. Miss Jayde Harvey Outdoor Education Teacher

Photo Day The College Graduation, Sports and Arts Photo Day, is Monday 31st August. Students are required to come to the Paul Rafter Centre (PRC) for their team photos according the schedule below. Students must be in full winter uniform, with their personal appearance meeting all aspects of the College Uniform policies on uniform items, hair, makeup and jewellery. The day will begin with the Year 12 Graduation Photo and the Year 7 group photos. Depending on a student’s involvement in extra-curricular activities at the College, it is possible that students may need to be present for multiple photographs throughout the day. It is therefore, the responsibility of all students to know when they required to be in the PRC for a team photo.

Staff Retreat Day - Prayer, Service and Justice On Friday 21st August, Anita Finneran from the Catholic Institute of Western Australia facilitated our Prayer, Service and Justice Day for staff at the Joondalup Reception Centre. Faith and spirituality are deeply personal but a shared experience. Anita provided a range of opportunities and reflections throughout the day for staff to reflect upon ‘Laudato Si’, an encyclical written by Pope Francis in 2015 which highlighted:

• The intimate relationship between the poor and the fragility of the planet.

• The conviction that everything in the world is connected.

• The critique of new paradigms and forms of power derived from technology.

• The call to seek other ways of understanding the economy and progress.

• The value proper to each creature.

• The human meaning of ecology.

• The need for forthright and honest debate.

• The serious responsibility of international and local policy.

• The throwaway culture and the proposal of a new lifestyle. The dialogue that Pope Francis proposes as a method for addressing and resolving the environmental problems, is followed throughout the Encyclical. At the heart of Laudato Si’ we find this question: “What kind of world do we want to leave to those who come after us, to children who are now growing up?” (160). Pope Francis continues: “This question does not have to do with the environment alone and in isolation, the issue cannot be approached piecemeal”. This leads us to ask ourselves about the meaning of existence and its values at the base of social life, “What is the purpose of our life in this world? Why are we here? What is the goal of our work and all our efforts? What need does the earth have of us?” Unless we struggle with these deeper issues – says the Pope – I do not believe that our concern for ecology will produce significant results.”

Reflection 22nd Sunday/ Twenty Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Year A The theme of the readings this weekend continues from last week. Jesus reveals the purpose of His earthly ministry, the divine plan for the salvation of all humankind and the good news that He, has come to suffer, die and be raised again for the forgiveness of our sins and the sins of the whole world! First reading: Jeremiah 20:7-9 Psalm: Psalm 62(63):2-6, 8-9 Second reading: Romans 12:1-2 Gospel: Matthew 16:21-27 Jesus began to make it clear to his disciples that he was destined to go to Jerusalem and suffer grievously at the hands of the elders and chief priests and scribes, to be put to death and to be raised up on the third day. Then, taking him aside, Peter started to remonstrate with him. ‘Heaven preserve you, Lord;’ he said, ‘this must not happen to you.’ But he turned and said to Peter, ‘Get behind me, Satan! You are an obstacle in my path, because the way you think is not God’s way but man’s.’ Then Jesus said to his disciples, ‘If anyone wants to be a follower of mine, let him renounce himself and take up his cross and follow me. For anyone who wants to save his life will lose it; but anyone who loses his life for my sake will find it. What, then, will a man gain if he wins the whole world and ruins his life? Or what has a man to offer in exchange for his life? ‘For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and, when he does, he will reward each one according to his behaviour.’

In today’s Gospel, Jesus lays down the conditions for any who want to follow him, it means taking up one’s own cross and losing one’s life in order to find it. This is the path that Jesus must go and the path that all who desire a relationship with him must also be prepared to embrace. Our society proposes that those who want to save their lives can do so, mostly by acquiring more things and

living in ever greater comfort. Jesus challenges us to be ready to lose our lives to be able to save them. Today ask yourself what this means in your life; How is the Holy Spirit working in you? What cross is Jesus placing before you today? How will you respond in joyful service? How will you “Take Up Your Cross” to follow Jesus?

Sport State Cross Country Championship

Following on from last week’s great news, Year 10 Raquelle Mazzardis has joined Dante Armstrong in registering a strong performance at the State Cross Country Championships. Raquelle finished 8th in the U/16 age group and earned a place in the State team. We can’t wait to see her in action at the upcoming ACC athletics carnival!

WA Secondary Golf Championships A big thank you to Ewan Westwood and Vaughan Arthur, who recently represented the College at this leading schools’ competition for competitive golfers. Both Ewan and Vaughan are keen golfers at Sun City and Joondalup respectively, and performed strongly against a strong field at Cottesloe Golf Club. We look forward to following the progress of the boys in years to come. ACC Championship Basketball The strong results achieved by our basketball teams continue to roll in, with the Senior Boys producing a convincing 58-41 performance against Ellenbrook Christian College in Round 16. Nhail Mayuen led the scoring with 25, whilst Kaman Majak contributed a valuable 15 for Mr Hendricks’ team. The boys now face CBC Fremantle on Monday afternoon at 3:30pm, here at the College, for a place in the semi-finals. Our junior boys were due to play Swan Christian yesterday afternoon in their semi-final match up, and a report on this game will follow next week. ACC Athletics Update

Preparations for the upcoming ACC Carnival will ramp up next week as the Year 7-10 members of the squad head to Peter Moyes Anglican School, on Thursday for a CAS Practice Meet. Students have received permission slips and will attend class for periods 1-3 before heading to Peter Moyes for the 1:00pm start. Sport uniform may be worn to school, and permission slips are due by Wednesday. Training sessions continue to run before and after school, and all squad members are asked to plan in advance to ensure that they get to as many sessions as they can. Even if it is for a short time, it’s vitally important that we get as much practice in over the next two weeks. 2020 Five-a-side Soccer Competition The Senior Group is almost complete with three teams vying for the two remaining semi-final spots. Staff team ‘The McCormack Choppers’ currently hold top position having played all their group games and are assured of one of the spots as the teams in second and third place must play each other in the last group fixture before the Finals begin.
