    GEOGRAPHY?

Study of the world around us. The world is

    changing and geographers describe and

explain these changes to help us manage our

environment. Geographers try to find out the

process of how new landscapes are created.

They use GEOSPATIAL SKILLS: to understand,

describe and enquire about the world.

    WHAT are the ADVANTAGES and

DISADVANTAGES of using aVERTICAL AERIAL PHOTO?

    Th ADV t f ti l i l

  • 8/4/2019 Year 7 Representing the World in Geography

    44/110

    The ADVantages of vertical aerial

    photos are:

    1. The scale is constant = all buildings that are

the same size look the same!

    2. Measurements of directions are easier to get

    3. Directions can be measured more accurately

    4. Can be used as a map5. Easier to interpret.

    Th DIS d t f ti l i l

  • 8/4/2019 Year 7 Representing the World in Geography

    45/110

    The DISadvantages of vertical aerial

    photos are:

    1. Doesnt look at the ELEVATION of land features

    = height of a hill.

    2. Objects that are under trees or under other tall

objects may not be visible.3. Some objects, such as ridges, cliffs, caves, maynot show on a vertical photograph if they aredirectly beneath the camera.

    4. If an area is covered by cloud layer, it is hard totake vertical photographs.

    SCALE:

    WHY DO WE USE SCALE?

It would be impossible to draw parts of the Earth to their actual size. Maps =

The map scale shows the relationship between measurements on a mapand the actual measurements on the ground.

    Observational Scale the size of

  • 8/4/2019 Year 7 Representing the World in Geography

    65/110

Observational Scale = the size ofan area being studied

Local scale: Involves the smallest area and is immediate to wherever thestudy is taking place.

E.g Fieldwork is conducted at the local scale.

Regional scale: Covers a larger area than the local scale.E.g The study of the MurrayDarling Basin.

National scale: A nation.E.g The Australian government's response to a global phenomenon.

International scale: Two or more nations.E.g Two or more Asian nations.

Global scale: Considers a significant proportion of the Earth.E.g the distribution of rainforests across the Earth.

  • 8/4/2019 Year 7 Representing the World in Geography

    66/110

Scale can be shown in three ways:

    1. Linear form - for example

    2. Ratio - for example, 1:100 000

    3. Statement - for example, 'one centimetre represents one kilometre.

A large scale map covers a small area with detail; a small scale map will cover alarger area with less detail.
