Christmas Jumper Day – Friday
18th December 2020
Each year our students and staff participate in
the wearing of a Christmas Jumper in support of
the Save The Children Charity. Although this falls on
the 11th December, we have chosen to postpone this
to Friday 18th December to coincide with our
annual Christmas lunch; which is due to be served at
the school on this day. It is also the final day of
collections for our Food Drive.
Students who wish to wear their Christmas jumper
on Friday 18th December are asked to either donate
a can or packet of food as outlined
below, OR £1 that will go to the above charity.
Food Drive 2020 Campaign
The above campaign organised by our
Sixth Form students will help provide much
needed supplies for the local Food Banks in
Southwark, Lewisham and Lambeth. Donations
are being accepted each day from Monday
14th December onwards. Specially socially
distanced deposit stations will be located at the
allocated entrances for each year group. We
would ask that donations comprise only non-
perishable dried or tinned food items.

Teacher
Recommendation
This week Mr Ross from
the Maths department
would like to recommend:
Excession
by Iain M Banks
This is the 5th book in the ‘Culture’ series (but you can
read them in any order).
What would future civilizations do when confronted by a
strange, new, and exceptionally powerful object in the
universe? Would it lead to galactic war or usher in a new
era of enlightenment?
‘I love this book as it describes a future where spaceships
are themselves intelligent minds and fight battles at
super-computer speeds lasting just seconds. The ships
talk to each other in their own language and have
cheeky, funny, dangerous or rude personalities. Humans
are mostly along for the ride in these space-adventures.’
Suitable for Key Stage 4 or 5 students.
Student
Recommendation
Crystal Norris in Year
10 would like to
recommend:
The Tomorrow Code
by Brian Falkner
Break the code – or
tomorrow is history…
This novel follows the
story of teenagers Tane and Rebecca, who are
receiving messages from the future,
and these messages are predicting the end of the
world. They have a matter of days to decode the
messages, or the entire human race will be destroyed.
Can they break the code in time?
Crystal would like to recommend this book because of
the fast-paced action of the narrative. The elements of
time travel are really interesting and really cleverly
done. The plot is designed to keep you questioning
the fate of the characters the whole way through!
This book is suitable for Key Stage 3 & 4 students.

Year 7 French Penpals

their correspondents in St-Germain.En-Laye (Paris). This
is a new scheme this year, that’s running in addition to
the Year 8 scheme in Brittany.
La Casa De Bernarda Alba
The Cervantes Theatre is back with its production of
Garcia Lorca’s ‘La Casa de Bernarda Alba’ that sold out in
2017, 2018 and 2019. It will be available online from the
9th December. This is a special edition with English
subtitles aimed at A Level Spanish students with a post-
show Question & Answer session with the director, Jorge
de Juan.
The play was written in 1936 by Federico García
Lorca (1898-1936) just before the Spanish Civil War
broke out. The play was first performed in Buenos Aires
in 1945. It was banned in Spain until 1963, partly because
of its political implications and partly because the
behaviour and language of the characters was regarded
as shockingly immoral.

department via [email protected]

What is Renaissance Accelerated Reader (AR)?
AR is a reading program that helps teachers support
and monitor children’s reading practice. Students pick a
book at their own level and read it at their own pace.
When finished, they take a short online quiz to measure
how much of the book they understood.
Parents: How can I help my child become a
better reader?
Make time for them to read at home. Children need
to read for at least 20 minutes every day to improve
their reading ability.
Encourage your child to read; discuss books, asking
questions about what they have read.
Find suitable books for your child at
www.arbookfind.co.uk. Use the Search function to
look for specific titles or topics or go to Advanced
Search to browse for books within your child’s
interest level.

House Challenge This week’s challenge from the House Team is all to
do with showing some more acts of kindness this
month of December.
Do Good December: Kindness Calendar 2020 has been a tough year in many ways. One thing
that can unite us and help us get through difficulties is
kindness. Although we cannot change our situation,
we can certainly respond to others with kindness.
When we are kind, we help others, we help ourselves
and we encourage others to be kinder too.
TASK:
Use the Kindness Calendar on the next page,
by Action for Happiness, to be kind to
others throughout the festive period.
Be sure to share your experience with the House Team
via our email address:
Please ensure that every entry is accompanied by the
student’s full name and tutor group as this will help to
generate valuable points for their House!!!

Transgender Awareness Week is a one-week celebration
leading up to Transgender Day of Remembrance, which
memorialises victims of transphobic violence. This year
Transgender Week was the 13th-19th November and
many of the usual celebrations took place online due
to COVID-19.
We must not continue ignoring the inequalities transgender
people face. We must work together to ensure trans and non-
binary people in the UK and around the world are treated
with dignity and respect.
