Roll out the red carpet. The ladies are in town for what should be an ex-citing feature in today’s eighth, the 91st running of the Adirondack (Gr. II). All-star 2-year-old fillies descend on Sara-toga Race Course in this 6 1/2-furlong sprint.

Start with Yonagucci. Owned by Roger Urbina, the Yonaguska filly looks to push Calder trainer Manny Azpurua up the Saratoga ladder with a big splash. Purchased from the Ocala Breeder’s Sales last August for only $15,000, the filly banged out clear wins in her first two starts and can improve to 3-for-3 today.

“I believe it’s a big step to race in a graded stakes, but I’m comfortable with her because she won her first race real easy,” said Azpurua. “The second race, which was a stakes, she won easy again. I believe she deserves a chance. She’s a good filly and she’s going to continue to develop and to improve a lot.

Last out, Azpurua’s charge took the 6-furlong $100,000 J J’s Dream Stakes, on a sloppy track, in 1:13. Calder-based Jeffrey Sanchez gets the return riding call today. In the stakes victory, July 7, she broke quickly with a quarter in 21 and change on her way to driving clear on the rail by almost 3 lengths.

“I forced her to go to the lead be-cause the track was sloppy that day and I didn’t want to take a chance,” Azpu-rua said. “I asked the rider to go to the lead, but she doesn’t have to.”

It’s been a while since Yonagucci ran, but her trainer isn’t too worried and says she looks good; especially with a bullet work at Calder Aug. 9.

“Well, she’s had about a month and a half between races,” Azpurua said. “I’ve been training her easy and in the last two weeks I’ve been training her a little bit harder, but raceday is going to be almost seven days from the last

time she worked. She was shipped in from Florida last Friday. She shipped fine, she’s in good shape. It’s true she worked well and hard, but she had to fly up here. She got some rest and is go-ing easy. I didn’t want to work her any-more after that last work.”

As for today’s race, Azpurua doesn’t really have a plan.

“This is an easy filly, she’s nice and quiet, you can do anything with this filly that the rider wants to. If you want the rider to come from behind or go to the lead, she can do it,” he said. “It all depends on the race. It should be a great race; I can’t wait to see what happens.”

herself is trainer Ken McPeek’s A To The Croft, who makes her second career start. The chestnut daughter of Menifee broke her maiden at Churchill Downs July 8, going 6 furlongs in 1:10 to win by three-quarters of a length. Owned by Koolmen Racing Stables, she needs an A-game performance entering her first stakes.

“Fifteen to one is generous. She’s a good filly, very, very good filly,” said McPeek. “She wants more distance and I don’t like the inside post but she’s big, strong, serious and wants to go a mile and an eighth when it’s all said and done. You’ll see her laying midpack and making a run at them late. She’s all class. All class.”

Already, the young filly’s been quite exciting for her trainer. She made her debut at 21-1 first time out.

“I don’t normally bet, but, when I

looked at the board and she was 20-1, I ran to the window,” said McPeek. “I never bet.”

McPeek named Kent Desormeaux on the $55,000 Keeneland September pur-chase, and is full of confidence.

“If she’s a good horse, she’ll win. Class rules. She’s good right now,” he said. “I was going to run her at Ellis in a little 50-added, but she was training so good, she’s been out-working every colt we’ve got, so I told the guys, ‘you might as well swing hard and high.’ So, we shipped her up, she out-worked an older filly the other day. She’s done ev-erything right. She’s gorgeous.”

I Promise, for trainer Gary Contes-sa, returns to the track after finishing second by a nose to Subtle Aly in the Schuylerville (Gr. III) Opening Day. The daughter of Hook And Ladder enters today’s Grade II as the only contender

with graded stakes experience. Owned by Dennis Narlinger, she set the pace in the Schuylerville only to be overtaken at the wire. Jockey Joe Bravo comes in from Monmouth for the mount today, the filly’s third career start.

Trainer Steve Asmussen’s Sky Mom brings the most experience with four prior races (two wins and two seconds). She also leads the field with $95,913 in earnings. In her most recent start, she chased Dancing Allstar home in the My Dear Stakes on the Polytrack at Wood-bine, finishing 6 3/4 lengths behind the winner after getting squeezed early. Two back, she won an allowance at Churchill Downs June 15 – her only non-Poly-track start – by covering 5 furlongs in 57 seconds. As in all prior starts, jockey Shaun Bridgmohan gets the mount.

Trainer Tim Salzman enters his first at the 2007 Saratoga meet with Bsharp-sonata, a daughter by Pulpit and Apa-sionata Sonata. Owned by Cloverleaf Farms, she makes her second start, after edging clear by 2 1/2 lengths to break her maiden July 15 at Delaware Park. Jumping to an early lead with a 21.3-second quarter-mile, she crossed the wire in 58 seconds for the 5 furlongs. Jockey Oliver Castillo gets the call again.

Last week Bob Baffert left Del Mar and headed to Saratoga with some of his classier horses, including E Z War-rior, bound for the Gr. I King’s Bishop, and Maimonides, who broke his maid-en Aug. 8. More Happy was part of that contingent and she invades the Adiron-dack as the race’s likely favorite.

Purchased for $1 million at the Fasig-Tipton Calder 2-Year-Old in Training Sale in March, the daughter of Vindi-cation didn’t disappoint when she won her debut – a July 21 victory all but guaranteed by Baffert.

While her final time of 1:05.70 won’t scare her eight opponents, the race was run over a deep and tiring Polytrack. More Happy dueled on the lead that day and Polytrack is typically kinder to closers. Rafael Bejarano, who rode Mai-monides and is 5-for-9 on Baffert run-ners the past two seasons, picks up the mount and should have More Happy in contention throughout.

Impressive Arlington Park maiden winner Passion (John Velazquez) goes out for trainer Todd Pletcher, who’s won the last two runnings of the Ad-irondack.

Honest to Betsy (Cornelio Velasquez) for trainer Dale Romans and Phantom Income (Eibar Coa) for Rick Violette round out the field.

RACE 1: ZAYNAB might be sitting on a race in her third of the form cycle at a level where she’s been competitive. WILLSHEFIRE put in a massive effort two back before finding stakes company too salty last time. She appears to have a big shot back at her condition. QUEEN AMIRA is another dropping in from stakes. She fits if you key off that race three back.

RACE 2: DANA DEW took money in the debut and adds Lasix and gets the switch to Edgar Prado. She’s got a big chance to wake up. WINNING PUNCH goes out for a barn that’s already sent out two firsters this meet, Remarkable Remy and Wish Me Success. DESALOOT has the look of a sneaky live firster. If she wins, that horse van you see swerving all over the road on the way back to Boston is probably being driven by James Hartley as he’s counting his money.

RACE 3: FLEET VALID shows a couple of races that would make him a huge threat here and I like that he’s reunited with Cornelio Velasquez, who piloted to a nice score at Gulfstream. WILL HE SHINE does his best work at this distance and ran a hole in the wind two back on the Belmont Day undercard. Scratched out of the Troy on Monday, COUNCIL MEMBER looks like a good fit after his closing finish in the True North where he was 2 1/2 lengths to the second pick.

RACE 4: INNER LIGHT has a very precocious looking pedigree for white hot connections. As expected, the Nick Zito 2-year-olds have run pretty well and PAINT cost 400k earlier this year, indicating he can run a little. Steve Asmussen is another who excels with firsters and DEVEREUX is nicely bred.

RACE 5: TOBRUK lost all chance at the start in his first start of the meeting when the gates opened before he was ready. A great win chance with the caveat that everybody and their Uncle Sal saw that trip and Everyman trip horses have a tendency to underperform. TY-PHOON TYCOON also had a troubled beginning before running on to be beaten less than 3 lengths. Should improve with a better start and a race over the surface. I imagine the plan for I’LL MAKE IT UP will be

for his speed to take him as far as it can. Maybe he hangs around for a slice or even wins.

RACE 6: ELECTRIC LIGHT’s form – three lengths to Shakespeare – sug-gests he ought to be able to handle this group. This barn is due to get off the schneid. YATE’S BLACK CAT ran a blinder in the Poker and has shown promise at various times throughout his career. I like that John Velazquez is enticed. SALINJA has run some good ones and might be suited by the slight cutback. He has a shot to outrun his odds.

RACE 7: SULTRY APPROVAL has a nice turf pedigree and grass guru Christophe Clement has great numbers in all the relevant categories. CLIFF MEADOWS ran a good one in his lone turf start and like the top one gets the crucial drop from maiden specials to maiden claimers. WESTERN BLUFF might have run the best of the ones coming out of the July 26 race when you account for the trouble he had and could move up in his second start at the meet. Should be a bomb.

RACE 8: I fell in love with MORE HAPPY in the paddock at Del Mar before her first race, noting that despite a sprinty pedigree she looked like she’d improve as the distances got a little longer. Assuming she won’t be odds-on, if she still looks that good and wins, I’m out on the meet. SKY MOM’s lone dirt fig is the best in the field. A massive shot if she can run back to that. I like that I PROMISE has a Grade 3 placed run over the track. There’s a chance she could step up. Her chances would improve if some of her rivals who showed speed on the Poly aren’t quite as fleet from the gate on traditional dirt.

RACE 9: BROKEN TREATY is in form, tactical, and I like that she retains the services of Cornelio Velasquez. Of the horses coming out of the race on July 29, I might try JOSEFINA’S PRIDE. Perhaps Prado – who rode the perfect trip winner in there – can guide her to a better journey. MY SISTER DIANE’s last turf race would probably win this – and yet she should be a very square price. She’s another I’ll use in the Pick Whatnots.

Coaching legend Don Shula once admonished a player who’d just per-formed a bit-too-boisterous touchdown dance, telling him to “act like you’ve been there before.” T. D. Vance has scored at Saratoga before, and while the situations were different, he acted ev-ery bit the veteran in taking Monday’s $81,700 Troy, a 5 1/2-furlong restricted turf stakes.

Owned by Don Adam and trained by Graham Motion, the son of Rahy won the Gr. II Hall of Fame here in 2005, taking the 9-furlong turf affair by a nose. While he’d earned more than $400,000 in 13 previous efforts on the lawn, most of them routes, T. D. Vance – making the first start of his 5-year-old campaign – was a relative newcomer to the short game.

After he rolled to a fairly comfortable half-length score Monday, his trainer believes he’s found a new career.

“I think we’ll keep him sprinting,” Motion said, “but now with the Poly-track we have so many more options than we used to.”

The trainer knew his horse had

speed; the tricky part was finding a spot to use it.

“The reason we were always try-ing to stretch him out as a 3-year-old is that there are so many more options for a 3-year-old going two turns,” Mo-tion said. “It was always a question of keeping him quiet to get him to go two turns. If you moved on him a little bit he was gone.”

Nowadays, he’s more tractable.“Well, that comes with age,” Motion

said.T. D. Vance demonstrated his new-

found rating ability under Garrett Gomez, sitting off front-running favor-ite Afrashad and Mr. Silver early. As the field turned for home and Silver Timber – who would be disqualified from third to fifth – caused a ruckus on the rail, T. D. Vance came wide and came home clear.

“He really did it nicely,” Motion said. “I was kind of surprised how qui-etly (Gomez) was sitting on him turning into the stretch.”

Though he hadn’t raced since No-vember, T. D. Vance had been prepping for the race with 5-furlong works over

the synthetic surface at Motion’s base in Fair Hill, Md., and the trainer was con-fident he’d be ready for his return.

“The fact that you’re sprinting you want them sharp anyway, it’s kind of a different ballgame,” Motion said. “I wanted him to be on his toes as much as he could and he was. His last work was a pretty serious work on the Tapeta; he was ready to go. It’s a lot easier to get them to go five-eighths the first time than a mile and an eighth. You’ve got to worry about the stamina and getting them to relax and everything else.”

With a host of options available for T. D. Vance, Motion is content to chart his course from point to point.

“I really haven’t looked beyond this to be honest,” he said. “I’m not some-body who gets that far ahead of them-selves, I like to take it one at a time.”

• Fresh Episode went off at 47-1 in the meet’s first week. He won. Monday, facing four of the horses he beat that day, he went to post 16-1 in very similar conditions. The punters, it seems, were unconvinced.

“Some guy asked me, ‘What do you think he’s going to be?’ ” co-owner Mi-chael Divitto said after the race. “I said, ‘He’ll probably pay $27 to win.’ He said, ‘No, not after winning,’ I said ‘For

some reason they’re not believers.’They should be now.A half-furlong longer and for a

$2,500 richer tag, Monday’s result was the same, as Fresh Episode ($34.20) be-came the first repeat winner of the meet, taking the 6 1/2-furlong opener by a length under Cornelio Velasquez for trainer Debra Divitto (Michael’s wife) and co-owner John Lemmens. Banque Royale was second, with Sami’s Dancer a length back in third.

Divitto was excited to be the first to win twice at the meet.

“It’s great. We’re a small stable,” he said. “We have nine horses, but we have some on the farm; we own Morning Sun Farms. We switch them back and forth to the track, we don’t have enough stalls.”

Claimed at Aqueduct in January, the son of Freud is finding his form.

“Things weren’t right with him, and then he got a lung infection,” Divitto said. “My wife just took her time and didn’t rush him; she did all the right things.”

• John Kimmel saddled Remark-able Remy ($12.80) in the second, a turf sprint for 2-year-old fillies, and the trainer gave rider Ramon Dominguez simple instructions.

“Help her out of there, give her a chance to settle and when it comes time, go after it.”

Like most battle plans, they worked – to a point. The filly got a clean break, but Dominguez couldn’t find a comfort-

able spot along the rail.“He never really got much of a chance

to tuck in,” Kimmel said while watch-ing the replay. “He was very wide, very wide.”

But it all worked out, as the daugh-ter of Hennessy – purchased across the street as a yearling by Live Oak Plan-tation for $200,000 – came storming down the middle of the Mellon course to beat favored Press Leak by a neck.

While many horses start their career on the main track, Kimmel provided the reasoning for holding his filly’s coming-out party on the lawn.

“I was working her on the dirt and she seemed to handle herself OK to about 3 1/2 furlongs,” he said. “As she started to get out in distance I was ex-pecting her to go forward and carry her speed but she just absolutely looked like the further we went on the dirt in her breezes the slower she was going. And she’s such a nice filly. That’s a very typi-cal scenario for horses that are kind of inefficient on dirt. She might find cer-tain tracks to run on, that she might find easier than others, but when I was working her on the training track at Belmont she was having a hard time. So when I came up here I worked her on the grass she worked great and so that’s probably the answer.”

• Vilify ($7.90) made her career bow here in 2006, finished nearly 13 lengths behind the winner, then disappeared from the stage for nearly a year. Returning at Belmont Park for her new trainer, Charl-ton Baker, the 3-year old daughter of Sil-ver Charm posted two respectable efforts. In Monday’s fifth, a state-bred affair at 7 furlongs, she put things together.

Alan Garcia shrewdly stalked paces-etters Show Me How and Golden Man-na through the early going, then took charge turning for home. All according to plan.

“Perfect, perfect . . . That’s what I told him,” said assistant trainer Da-vid Henriques. “Just break her then sit chilly. Don’t worry about her, she’s all right.”

One In A Romp stumbled at the out-set, circled the field then closed like an off-Broadway production, missing by just a half-length and finishing more than 6 lengths ahead of Token Bay.

The win was the second at the meet for Baker, perhaps best known to Spa railbirds as the trainer of speedball Top Shoter. He and Henriques have been working together for three years, man-aging the barn from different ends of the Empire State.

“I’m at Belmont and Charlton Baker is at Finger Lakes,” Henriques said. “I train horses for myself, too. He’s a nice kid, a very nice kid. And she’s a nice filly.”

• Thorn Song ($16.40) entered June a 4-year-old maiden, toting a nice pedi-gree and an 0-for-7 record. Then trainer Dale Romans moved the son of Unbri-dled’s Song to the turf. Nice move. After wiring a contentious allowance field in Monday’s sixth, the colt sports a three-race winning streak.

Owned by Zayat Stables, the gray grabbed the lead by the first call, held it despite early pressure then fended off hard-charging Prince Rahy to score by a neck under Edgar Prado.

“I told him if somebody was right in front of him he could just sit behind one horse,” Romans said, “but it didn’t look like it in the race so I told him if he went to the lead just try to get him to relax.”

With his charge now rolling over the grass like a Cub Cadet, the Kentucky-based trainer was asked why he didn’t make the surface switch sooner.

“That’s a good question, Romans re-plied. “I don’t know. It took me a long time to realize he might be a turf horse. He trained so well on the dirt and he ran some decent races, but he just wasn’t finishing like he was training, so we de-cided to try the grass, see if he’d have a little more kick – wish we’d have done it (earlier) . . . He’s turned into a monster on the grass.”

• Barclay Tagg sent Bb Livermore against 10 other maidens in the seventh, and Ramon Dominguez brought him

home a winner. Making his second start for his new barn, the 3-year-old son of Mt. Livermore rated off the lead in the early going. Unable to find a path through a crowded field on the turn, Dominguez swung his mount to the outside. Clear of traffic, he overtook all comers, speeding home three-quarters of a length ahead of favorite Joppa Flat’s.

Dominguez, who notched his 11th win of the meet, was given carte blanche by his trainer.

“Barclay is a very easy-going guy and I knew the horse because I got on him in the morning,” the jockey said. “He just told me ‘Good luck.’ He really didn’t tell me anything. We had a great trip, unfortunately we weren’t able to get through on the inside, it looked like there was a lot of commotion.”

• Scott Schwartz and 6-year-old Pay Attention ($6.20) have a long relation-ship, one that’s managed to survive long periods of separation.

“I bred him and I claimed this horse four times,” Schwartz said. “I’ve lost him four times and claimed him back four times.

Their good times came together in the eighth race, as the trainer and 6-year-old son of Take Me Out each picked up his second win of the meet.

Under Javier Castellano, the gelding loomed farther off the pace than in his Opening Week score before seizing the lead in the stretch. Indian Hawke – win-ner of the 2006 Albany over the 9-fur-long distance – then wrested it away, seemingly for good, until Pay Attention grabbed it back for keeps.

“This was a different kind of race (than the last), a lot more speed,” said Schwartz, “plus he’s carrying 123 pounds . . . They went 47 and change for the half and then Javier made his move; he opened up a little but I think the weight hit him. The last hundred yards it was just guts. The horse came back at him, but he ran a good race, he did his thing. That’s my horse.”

But like in a Victorian romance, the happy reunion was cut short for Schwartz and Pay Attention, as the gelding was claimed by trainer David Jacobson for $30,000. Still, the feeling remains.

“He’s something special,” Schwartz said, “just a nice, old, hard-hitting horse. But I lost him.”

• Trainer and television personality Howie Tesher played host in the win-ner’s circle following the nightcap, as his charge Gold Pageantry ($11.80) scored by 2 lengths in the 10th.

The script was something of a sur-prise to owner Snookum Farms.

“I had to explain to the owner this horse has gotten in trouble so many times,” Tesher said. “I said ‘let’s make it easy on him.’ ”

The owner didn’t realize that meant a quick trip to the claiming ranks.

“He thought I was running in an al-lowance race again, and he picks up the paper and sees that he’s in for $35,000,” the trainer said. “He was ‘but’-ing me, but I said to him, ‘The only way you can win is make it easy,’ and he said OK. That was it.”

Gold Pageantry drove home for a comfortable score over favorite Delta Park, and avoided the threat of the claim box. Tesher was perhaps most pleased with the performance of jockey Alan Garcia, who scored for the second time on the card.

“I love the kid,” Tesher said. “He must have gotten this horse in trouble four times (before) . . . every time every-thing happened so finally I’m yelling ‘just be aggressive’ and he’s riding and he’s doing it. Then he said to me ‘Did you see how aggressive I rode him today?’ ”

If the West Point Handicap looked like a class reunion then Classic Pack was squarely at the back of that class, finishing behind rivals Foreverness, Dave, Golden Commander, Red Zipper and Pa Pa Da during a seven-race losing streak.

By the end of the mile and an eighth, Classic Pack was back at the head of the class, rallying from fifth to run down Red Zipper and Foreverness and win by three-quarters of a length. Red Zipper held on for second, after battling For-everness through the stretch. The latter finished third, a half-length behind Red Zipper. Owned and bred by John Beck-er, Classic Pack finished the distance in 1:47.77 for trainer Mike Hernandez and jockey Cornelio Velasquez.

The West Point attracted the usual New York-bred turf horses who take turns beating each other and this edition was no different. Retribution blasted to the lead, rendering Red Zipper as the virtual pacesetter as Retribution posted splits of 22.23 and 45.27 seconds. Red Zipper collared Retribution first, with Foreverness and Golden Commander tracking closely behind. Velasquez

placed Classic Pack just off of them and watched those two wrestle each other before roaring down the center of the turf.

The 4-year-old son of Regal Clas-sic attracted little attention on the tote board, going off at 13-1 against his classmates.

Becker was ecstatic with the upset.“It’s very exciting because he had

struggled, losing seven in a row after having great 2-year-old and 3-year-old years. But he ran well, he had a couple of thirds by a small amount and he was always coming on,” Becker said. “I bred (Regal Classic) to a little girl (Three Pack) that I had run for four years, so it’s a family affair.”

Becker, who has owned horses for about 15 years, usually has 10 or 12 yearlings and keeps a couple of horses in training. Classic Pack upped his earn-ings to $472,153 from 17 starts.

“I had a piece of a horse who won the Gold Cup at Ascot, somebody talked me into doing that and I’ve been involved ever since,” Becker said. “Ardross was his name. The Queen Mother presented the cup to me, that was a lot of fun. It’s

an up and down business but it’s a lot of fun on days like today. I didn’t hope to win, I thought he had a real good shot to place or show, these are good horses, real good horses.”

Hernandez was much more confi-dent since changing Classic Pack’s train-ing after finishing fifth in the Naskra’s Breeze behind Foreverness and Dave.

“If you’re a horseman you know what to do, sometimes you do stupid things and you get mad, then you have to change things, and it works out,” Hernandez said. “He’s always there, always there. I did some things to get him in good shape, maybe I was too easy with this horse and he needed a little punishment. You’ve got to train on them sometimes, I trained on him very hard. I worked him hard, much harder.

It worked.”Classic Pack recorded three works

since the Naskra’s Breeze, a half-mile in 49 seconds, 5 furlongs in 1:03 1/5 and another half in 50 3/5.

Velasquez took over for Fernando Jara, who rode Classic Pack in his pre-vious eight races. He rode the race like Retribution wasn’t in it.

“That horse just wanted to go to fast, I knew he would quit. My horse was up in the bit and I just tried to keep him in the clear,” Velasquez said. “I wasn’t scared of him (Retribution) because I knew he would come back. I knew Red Zipper and Foreverness were the horses to beat. I just tried to follow Red Zipper out there. He was a little green but he let me put him behind horses. Turning for home I had a lot of horse.”

“ After reading Andy Beyer’s books, I really started getting into the business of picking horses. It was a confi rmation to me that betting on horses is not a waste of time, and they dispelled the myth that no one ever wins at the racetrack.” — Andy Serling, host of

youbet.com’s Play to Win

“ If not for Andy Beyer’s classic books, I never would have gotten involved in horse racing.”

Don’t ever play poker with trainer Tom Bush.

A minute to post and Bush was draw-ing dead. His face read a busted straight. The one card in the deck he needed was nowhere to be found. The anguish was clearly visible. All his chips were in the middle of the table with little chance of coming back to him. Bush was in rough shape.

“Good luck here, Tom.”“Thanks, I’m going to need it.” The field loaded in the gate. The bell

sounded. Sunday’s fourth race was un-derway.

Almost 82 seconds later it was over. Bush wiped the sweat from his brow, gave a look of utter relief, and turned over his hand to all those silly enough to call him down; he had aces full.

Posted ($2.50) went off at 1-5 against fellow state-breds and he never raised a sweat while winning a $61,000 allow-ance by 7 1/2 easy lengths. It could have been twice as much. And when Posted learns his lessons there will be more chips in the middle of the table and much bigger paydays.

The 4-year-old gelded son of Gone West is starting to make fellow Em-

pire hero Commentator look slow. And Commentator has been known to out-run a missile.

Bred by Berkshire Stud and originally sold for $350,000 as a yearling to Win-Star Farm, Posted has had his share of setbacks. He never made it to the races until January 2007. As a result, WinStar cut ties with the fleet gelding.

“We bred him and sold him as a year-ling and WinStar had him and he didn’t do for them what they wanted in their program so they were kind enough to sell him back to us and let us have some fun with him,” said Dr. Doug Koch, of Berkshire Stud. “He’s had some issues along the way but nothing major, just things to delay him from getting there (to the starting gate). They had him when he was a 2- and 3-year-old and he had various little things that sort of niggled at him, I guess. Once he wasn’t going to be a major 3-year-old they were kind enough to sell the horse back to us, which was really great of them.”

Now owned by Berkshire and Water-ville Lake Stables, the horse is making the owners feel like they went deep sea diving and uncovered the Titanic. Koch isn’t completely surprised.

“He has been a top-class horse from day one,” Koch said. “His mother (Give Notice, by Known Fact) gives nothing but beautiful horses and he was an out-standing yearling. He was a star from day one.”

Posted made his debut in January and steadied down the backstretch in an eight-horse field, raced close to the lead-ers and came again in deep stretch to fin-ish second. More time off and more nag-ging injuries left Posted on the sidelines until July 14. It was worth the wait.

Posted blitzed a field of state-bred maidens by almost 14 lengths. With Cornelio Velasquez a mere passenger,

the horse widened at every call and ran his last sixteenth of a mile, while under wraps, in six seconds flat. The speed fig-ure earned that day would rank him a contender in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint. Sunday was much the same.

Dragging Velasquez to the front, Posted effortlessly assumed command. Those actually thinking the Graveyard of Favorites would strike again had their tickets go up in smoke when the first quarter went past in 23.25 seconds. Though it looked like a morning gallop, the half-mile went in 46.22. Widening while in hand, Posted ran 6 furlongs

in 1:09.35 and finished up his 7 fur-longs of work in 1:21.74, while running sideways in deep stretch with his head cocked toward the infield and refusing to change leads until a few jumps from the wire. The rest ran straight and true and never had a chance.

“He’s still learning; very green. We have worked on his lead changes a lot and I was disappointed he wasn’t a little better today than he was,” Bush said. “He’s just one those horses whose stride is so long and so big and he is such a big, rangy horse, it’s just not as easy to change his lead as it is for other horses.”

The future is clearly in front of Post-ed. Bush hopes the horse can step for-ward without taking two steps back. With only three races under his belt there is still plenty of room for improve-ment and ample time to let the big horse ease into his body.

“He has always had a tremendous amount of talent. When he was a younger horse it was just one niggling thing after another that stopped him,” said Bush. “Hopefully we can keep his problems at bay to where we can put some races together and have a fit horse without having to over-train him. I don’t know (how good he can be). The level we are running at, it’s hard to evaluate horses like this. But obviously he runs fast and we know he does have a very, very big and long stride that makes you think he might want to do a lot more.”

And that sounds like a full house.

• • •“Yeah baby, fifty-seven thousand

dollar purse!”That’s been heard a lot these days,

as NYRA’s increased purse structure has benefited owners and trainers alike. Count Don Rosen among the lucky ones after Boxitup broke her maiden in the second, for state-bred fillies and mares on the inner turf.

Trained by Tom Albertrani, the 3-year-old daughter of Outofthebox has shown marked improvement since Al-bertrani switched her to the turf for her sophomore debut this June. A fourth and a second at Belmont had her ready to break through in her Saratoga debut. Under a confident Cornelio Velasquez, Boxitup opened a 5-length lead in deep stretch and held off a fast-closing Cru-sader’s Code to score by three-quarters of a length.

“Unbelievable. I won up here last year with Baymont, but this is just great,” Rosen said as he tried to find his breath. “What is so exciting about her (Boxitup) is that she broke down last year in the Florida Stallion Stakes, a $400,000 race. I sent her to Tom to get her right and he made her into a turf horse. She has been training great lead-ing up to this so maybe she will be as good as I was told she would be when bought her. We always had high hopes for her; we ran her in the $400,000 race when she was just a maiden.”

• Steve Klesaris continued a hot start at the Spa when Angelic Aura ($7) took the opener, a $20,000 claimer, for Ra-mon Dominguez. The Mid-Atlantic-based trainer saddled his third winner from only five starters when the son of Concerto proved an easy 7 1/4-length winner. Sitting on top of a quick half-mile of 46.83 seconds set by Forecourt,

Dominguez broke the race open turning for home and Angelic Aura drew off to win over favored Lethimthinkhesboss.

• Trainer Tony Dutrow sent out the heavy 3-5 favorite Bill Place in the third, but it was brother Rick who got the cash when Digger ($22) blasted a field of high-priced claimers by 6 3/4 lengths. Edgar Prado had the son of Yonaguska just off a 21.87-second first quarter, while racing three-wide on the backstretch. Digger moved quickly to the front and rattled off a half-mile in a blazing 44.33. Even with the hot frac-tions, the closers were unable to rally and Digger never looked back, covering the 6 1/2 furlongs in a zippy 1:15.40.

Tony Dutrow didn’t leave emp-ty handed, however, plucking down $100,000 to claim Spirit Of Gulch from trainer Gary Contessa for owner Mi-chael Dubb.

• John Kimmel called on his back class to score with firster Wish Me Success ($26.60) in the fifth, a maiden sprint for freshmen fillies. Once known for being potent in their first starts, the Kimmel horses have lately fired better after a race or two.

It looked much the same as Wish Me Success lagged at the back of the pack for the first half-mile. With only one

horse beaten, jockey Garrett Gomez be-gan to move the daughter of Successful Appeal as the leaders banged out a half-mile in 45.12 seconds.

Swinging seven-wide turning for home, the pair still found themselves in seventh as the field streaked past the eighth pole. The fractions finally began to tell on the front runners, and Wish Me Success was in full stride in the final half-furlong. Streaking past the gasp-ing leaders, she won going away by 1 1/2 lengths. Banner Day used the same tactics to secure second, and complete a $296.50 exacta.

• Crystal Minuet ($7.10) helped Bill Mott extend his lead in the trainer standings when she won a blanket fin-ish in the seventh, a maiden for fillies and mares over the inner turf. John Ve-lazquez had the daughter of Theatrical forwardly placed down the backside as second-choice Elusive Melody brought a closeknit field through a half-mile of 49.73 seconds.

Velazquez moved in between horses as the field turned for home and his filly gamely ran down Quiet Alice (Edgar Prado) by a neck. It was another neck back to Final Refrain, who steadied early and then again on the backstretch, and was forced seven-wide turning for home.

• Quota ($5.70) gave Mott a double when she easily took the eighth for Kent Desormeaux. The allowance/optional claimer was a tough spot for the daugh-ter of Seeking The Gold to face winners for the first time, but she pointed to a bright future with a 2 1/4-length win – the 13th of the meet for Mott, who has won or shared in eight Saratoga train-ing titles (the most recent in 2001) over his Hall of Fame career.

We’re All About Your Horse......UP CLOSE, PERSONAL, HANDS ON

We tailor every horse’s program to its immediate needs and continuing requirements. Daily handling, evaluation and observation keep your horse on course and allow for immediate adjustments. Our team of respected veterinarians and farriers are in constant communication.

Clermont’s 260+ acres include dozens of paddocks and pastures, miles of four-board and diamond mesh fencing, automatic waterers, and lush grasses. The barns feature oversized stalls, cement block construction, steel mesh doors and staff onsite 24/7.

Skilled management and an exceptional facility provide the framework for your horse to thrive and succeed at Clermont Farms, and beyond.

Clermont Farms is accepting Yearlings for post-Sales Letdownand we have openings in our Broodmare and Nursery Divisions.

Some people go to the lake. Some head to the links. Some take naps. On my day off, I go racing, just like I’ve done for the entire meet.

But not exactly. On Monday, I turn off the tape re-corder, hand the day’s reporting to Jamie Santo, leave the coat and tie in the closet and walk to the track. Twelve papers in a row fading in the distance. Shorts, T-shirt, sneakers and baseball cap. The only things in my pockets are money and the Form.

Beautiful.Look for a giveaway chair from the day before but

no luck, so I rent a chair for $5 (plus $5 deposit) and post it at the corner between the racing office and the paddock chute. Perfect spot to see the horses walk into the paddock and (good naturedly) heckle the jockeys and valets on their way to work.

Purposefully miss the first, bottom claimers on the dirt and wait for the second, 2-year-olds on the turf. Look for the most striking one and obviously miss it, going down on the two favorites, Press Leak and Saratoga Summer while John Kimmel sneaks first-time starter Remarkable Remy past me in a three-horse photo. I’m down $12 but at least I’m not sweating in a sport coat.

Decide against the third, which I don’t understand and buy a can of Coors Light for $6.50. Now, I under-stand why everybody brings coolers of beer to the rac-es. Enjoy the race, while watching from the distance.

Sal Russo’s filly, Dr. D’s Archangel looks majestic heading to the paddock, I barely handicap the race, just lumping on the best-looking filly in the race. She somehow ends up in front (maybe I should have read the Form) and my $40 goes up in flames as she fades.

“Is that a real dollar?” Sharon Balfe asks from an adjacent chair. I dive for the bill that’s sitting lonely in the street between my chair and the chute.

Ten bucks. The day is coming together. I give the dollar to Balfe who in turn buys me a can

of Coors Light. Jockeys tend to look down as they walk past except

for Kent Desormeaux who returns a big smile and a fist pump when he hears, “Bet the rent on Kent.” He made it up, not me.

In the fifth, we love the Chief and bet $20 to win on One In A Romp and hook the Jerkens filly up in exac-tas with Randy Allen-shipper Show Me How and tri-ples with Finger Lakes maestro Charlton Baker’s Vili-fy. One In A Romp hops in the air, then comes running to fall short of Vilify. Show Me How shows us how to go to the lead and stop, $36 stays with NYRA.

Still love Dancing Forever who walks to the pad-dock like a hunter and then gallops around for a non-threatening fourth – doesn’t even give us a chance to root. Exactas and triples go down when Thorn Song wires them. Kept telling my friends that Prince Rahy was a great price, he finishes second and returns $8.70 while I lose another $30.

“This game sure is more fun when you’re winning.”

“I wouldn’t know,” comes the chorus.Buy a bag of Cracker Jack to get me through the

seventh, which I don’t understand but still bet $20 to win on Mike Hushion’s returnee, Sixthirteen. He looks like he gets caught up with my rented chair in the stretch, costing me win and exacta money.

Finally, the Troy and my favorite horse on the card, T. D. Vance. Graham and Anita Motion walk past and stop when they hear the “Come On Motion” call from the bleachers. They wonder what I’m doing and I tell them I’m having a fun day at the races. T. D. Vance looks stunning in paddock and I get excited, bet $30 to win on the 5-year-old making his first start since last fall. Hook him up in a $20 double with another Mid-Atlantic trainer I follow, Mike Trombetta in the last. Garrett Gomez looks like he read tomorrow’s charts, sitting stone still aboard T. D. Vance, who wins laughing. After the race, a bum of a fan heckles Javier Castellano and it’s almost fisticuffs. Half the racetrack was there in an instant, watching Castellano’s back. Fun place until stupidity takes over, the guy had no chance. I go to the window and collect $129, wonder-ing why I bet all those other stabs earlier in the card. That’s OK, all I need is Trombetta.

My chair is gone. I return after the ninth and there’s nothing in my box – no friends, no chair. I march over to the chair rental place and ask if they picked up my chair. They say no, I say yes, and they return my $5 without a hassle. Scam.

Bet $20 to win on Delta Park and $7 in triples. I knew I was in trouble when Rick Lang asks me if I like Howie Tesher’s horse in the last. Tesher outguns Trombetta and my double, win money and triple go asunder.

I lose $71 – money well spent on a beautiful day at the track.
