DAY 1 – READ ALOUD, THINK ALOUD

Pay special attention to, and make notes on, the

characters and how they are linked.

DAY 2 – Retrieval

Bronze: Choose 6 characters from the story so far and

retrieve as much information about them as you can:

Lady Kraken Mr Mollusc

Jenny Hanniver Sebastian Eels

Captain K Mrs Fossil

Boathook Man Peter Parma

Mr Seegol Dr Thalassi

Violet Parma Herbie Lemon

Silver: Find connections between your chosen characters

and annotate your plan (draw lines/arrows and make

notes about connections).

Gold: Find connections for each character to the legend

of the Malamander. Are they all connected to the

creature? If they are, why? If they are not, why not?

DAY 3 – Vocabulary

Bronze: An idiom is a phrase which is said to mean something very different to what the words would suggest. For example ‘raining

cats and dogs’ does not mean pets are falling from the sky, Instead it means that it is raining very heavily. Similarly, ‘Pull your socks up’

does not mean your socks have fallen down. Instead, it means that you need to try harder.

Connect each these idioms which include weather words with what they actually mean.

Break the ice

to feel sick or unhealthy.

As right as rain

there’s something good in every bad

situation.

To be under the weather

to be very happy about something

Every cloud has a silver lining

to take attention away from

someone on their special day i.e. a

wedding or birthday.

Steal someone’s thunder

to feel well, alright.

To be on cloud nine

to get a conversation started in a

social situation, break the awkward

silence when meeting someone new.

Silver: Find 3 more idioms which have a weather connection.

1. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________

2. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________

3. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Gold: Write a paragraph about a day at school, using as many idioms as you can. How many idioms can you include?

DAY 4 – Inference

What do we already know about the legend of the Malamander?

Bronze: Write 3 facts about what the malamander might look like, based on your inference from the story so far.

1. The Malamander __________________________________________________________________________________________

2. The Malamander __________________________________________________________________________________________

3. The Malamander __________________________________________________________________________________________

Silver: Using your inference, draw what you think the

Malamander looks like.

Gold: Using your inference, write a description of the

Malamander which might appear in Captain K’s book.

DAY 5 - Application

The missing page of Captain K’s book.

It described the legend of the Malamander in detail. Some of these details exist in the legend which the people of Eerie-On-Sea tell.

What information might it hold?

Aesthetics (what is looks like)

Habitat (where it lives)

Diet (what it eats)

Particulars (things it does)
