Year 5: My Learning Newsletter Note from Miss Burns Hello to my wonderful class, I am missing you all terribly and can't wait until we're back together again. I don't know about you, but time is moving faster than ever at the minute. I can't quite believe we are approaching our third month since school closed. It was lovely speaking to you and your families this week, for me, talking to you all and finding out what you have been doing really does fill me with joy and makes this strange time a little easier. I have been doing lots of activities at home with Michael. We have been baking, going out for walks and trying to enjoy the nice weather. We have been out on bikes and discovering our local area, I have lived in Durham for many years now but every time I go out, I discover something new. As I mentioned last time, I have been spending so much time in my garden. The lockdown has resulted in me becoming very independent. Usually I would call on someone for help but I am quite proud of all of the DIY and jobs I have been doing at home. I even put up my gazebo (with some help from Michael). This extended period at home has also given me an opportunity to look through and organise old photographs. Can you spot Miss Burns in her old primary school photograph? What have you been doing? Have you read anything good lately or been doing anything exciting? Please send me your pictures and I can pop them on our Facebook page so other families can see them too. My email address is [email protected] Hopefully you will have seen our newest video asking you to create your own bunting, this request was made last week and we hope to fill the school with our bunting designs and brighten up school, ready for your return. Remember that lockdown won't last forever, if you're bored, try and be creative and think of something new and exciting to build, make or create. Also, don't forget to help your families around the house. Miss you all, Miss Burns

Year 5: My Learning Newsletter

Note from Miss Burns

Hello to my wonderful class,

I am missing you all terribly and can't wait until we're back together again.

We have been out on bikes and discovering our local area, I have lived in Durham for many years now but every time I

go out, I discover something new.

Please send me your pictures and I can pop them on our

Facebook page so other families can see them too. My email address is [email protected]

Hopefully you will have seen our newest video asking you to create your own bunting, this request was made last week and we hope to fill the school with our bunting designs and brighten up school, ready for your return.

Remember that lockdown won't last forever, if you're bored, try and be creative and think of something new and exciting to build, make or create. Also, don't forget to help your families around the house.

Miss you all,

Miss Burns

It can be difficult to find motivation to do regular exercise, especially when there are so many restrictions in place; however, there are lots of ways you can keep active and healthy. Whether it's doing PE with Joe Wicks as a form of daily exercise or going for a walk or bike ride, please find a way to safely exercise and stay healthy during this period of isolation. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s, Joseph and his Technicolour Dreamcoat is a wonderful musical that we were hoping to perform in the Summer term. We would love for you to continue to practise some of the songs from the production and familiarise yourself with the show. Here are the links to some of the songs to learn:

Who is Bridget Riley?

Bridget Riley was born in 1931 in London, but when World War II broke out she left the city and moved to Cornwall. She would walk along the coastline and explore the caves where she would sit and watch the reflections in rock pools. She also liked looking at the sea and how the light made it change colour during the day. She thought this painting looked a bit like a dance too, with its diagonal lines and bright colours. Do you think it does? The composition of the painting is quite simple, just a lot of rectangles – but sometimes the simplest things can seem complex.

Over to you! Can you create your own Op Art? Bridget Riley inspired many pieces of art in this style, have a look by following the link below for inspiration. https://www.tate.org.uk/kids/explore/what-is/op-art If you can, can you create your own Op Art Plantpot? https://www.tate.org.uk/kids/make/paint-draw/make-op-art-plant-pot If you don’t have a plant pot, do you have an old pot, toilet roll tube, pringles tube that could be decorated?

The Egyptians

Part of the story is set in Egypt. We would like you to look at the presentation below and see if you can write your own names in hieroglyphics and even play games. Write like an Egyptian!

If you have these everyday ingredients, you can do fun science experiments at home, as the Head Squeeze team demonstrates. https://youtu.be/a15x5zYgXME There are so many different scientific experiments for you to try, have a look and see which one you can do. Record your findings! Take a photo or video of your experiment in action and give a scientific explanation of how or why it happened. Ask your grown up to send me your findings and outcomes by emailing [email protected]
