This week we need to review 4 and 6 figure grid references, that we learnt about last week, to make sure we really know how to use them accurately. You have a choice between 2 worksheets. Worksheet 1 on pg 10 is the easier one and worksheet 2 on pg 11 is a little more challenging. Perhaps you’d like

to do worksheet 1 and then have a go at the second one.

Science

We now begin to look at simple mechanisms like ramps, levers, pulleys and wheels and axles. Click on each image below

to learn about the different type of simple mechanisms. Watch the clips in number order. Then read the notes on pg 7 and complete Task 1. Then complete Task 2 on pg 8.

Optional fun extra activities you may like to try:

Use your Geography knowledge to play battleships. (pg 12 & 13)

Use your Science knowledge to investigate. (pg 14 & 15)

Make armpit fudge

Science

A mechanism is a device that changes an input force or motion into a different output force or motion.

Some mechanisms make work easier to do by allowing a smaller force to have a greater effect.

There are different types of simple machines:

Ramps

Levers

Pulleys

Wheels and axles (and gears)

Task 1: Do these objects use levers, pulleys or gears?

In a watch, the gears turn to move the hands around the clock face. You may like to investigate a little further and find out for yourself how gears work. Ask an adult to help you re-search this.

Science

Task 2: It’s your turn to become an inventor! Your task is to design a machine that will achieve a given aim. Make sure your machine uses lots of mechanisms including levers, pul-leys and even gears if you feel like a challenge! Before you start planning, click on the image below for some inspiration. There are some ide-as in the box below but you are welcome to come up with your own aim. Use the sheet on pg 9 to plan and design your invention.

Your machine could:

Water a plant

Make a drink

Collect mail from the letterbox

Pack a bag

Turn a light on or off Steps in your planning process:

1. Think of an idea– what is the aim of your machine? What aim will it achieve?

2. Design and draw your machine.

3. Gather your materials.

4. Build your machine.

5. Evaluate your machine.
