Finding fractions of Amounts A fraction tells you how many parts of a whole there are. When we find a fraction of an amount, we are working out how much that 'part' is worth within the whole. You can see fractions of amounts all around us:

Shops have sales that say, “¹/₂ price!” or “¹/₃ free!”

You might use fractions when baking, for example, “add half a teaspoon of salt” or “use a ¹/₄ of a kilogram of flour”.

Remember: Divide the integer (whole number) by the denominator, then multiply that answer by the numerator. Follow up tasks in home learning workbooks: Power Maths 5B, pages 119 - 121.

Reading – Comprehension https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zs44jxs Watch the three learner guides about comprehension. In the online lesson, we will read and discuss a biography of a British soldier, Simon Weston. We will read the biography together as a class, and answer questions about what you have read. We will focus on: Negative and positive information Descriptive words Layout features of the text Language features of the text Retrieval and Inference skills Follow up tasks in Home Learning Workbooks: KS2 Comprehension - Book A, pages 10 – 11.

Using fractions as operators Some fraction calculations can be expressed differently, but give the same answer. You will need to decide which method is the most efficient. Example: 1/5 of 10 =

10 ÷ 5 = 2 (divide the integer by the denominator)

2 x 1 = 2 (multiply the answer by the numerator) 1/5 x 10 = 10/5 (multiply the numerator by the integer, the denominator stays that same) 10/5 = 2

= 2 wholes

You will notice that finding a fraction of a number and multiplying the fraction by the number will give the same answer.

Follow up tasks in Home Learning Workbooks: Power Maths 5B, pages 122 – 124.

Spelling Word endings - suffixes A suffix is a letter or group of letters that can be added to the end of a word to make a new word. Advert + ise -> Advertise Happy + ly -> Happily Spelling tasks in Home Learning Workbooks: Book 4 (KS2 Grammar, Punctuation & Spelling - Year 5 Targeted Question Book) page 84 and 85. Can you think of other words that have these ending and can you give examples of how and when you would use them in sentences. Write some of your own.

Problem solving – mixed word problems https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/z76qmfr You will need to use what you have learnt so far about multiplying fractions to solve the problems in your Power Maths book. Follow up tasks in Home Learning Workbooks: Power Maths 5B, pages 125 - 127

Brackets for extra information https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zvwwxnb/articles/zg6xb82 Brackets can be used to add additional information to a sentence. Without brackets: Albert the alien was in charge of the wrecking ball. With brackets: Albert the alien (who had no training) was in charge of the wrecking ball. The sentence has to make sense without the words inside the brackets, it's just a bit more interesting with the added detail. Follow up tasks in Home Learning Workbooks: Book 4 (KS2 Grammar, Punctuation & Spelling - Year 5 Targeted Question Book) pages 52 and 53.

Science: Electricity

Static electricity is the build-up of an electrical charge on the surface of an object. It is called "static" because the

charges remain in one area rather than moving or "flowing" to another area.

Spanish – Animals

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zh7wqp3/articles/zkqhhbk

Read and answer the questions on pages 16- 17 in your Spanish books. Remember you can use the CD to help you

with your pronunciation. Try to practise with a family member – maybe you could teach them some Spanish!

Practise saying the names of the animals and Spanish. Ask and answer the question ‘Do you have any pets?’ in

Spanish. Answer the questions about Sergio’s pets and then tell me all about your pets. If you do not have any pets,

you can make some up.

I would love to see some more screenshots/photos of your work. Please email

them to [email protected]

You are not expected to email every piece of work that you complete – maybe

choose something that you have worked particularly hard on during the week.

Thank you to the children who have already done this. Keep up the good

work!
