Welcome to Hendersons Educational Services.

Since 1990, we have been helping higher achieving students perform at their best and assisting them on their path to success. All Hendersons teaching staff are experienced and highly qualified teachers. They are carefully selected to ensure our philosophy and exemplary teaching standards are maintained.

Our programs are conducted over a limited period of time as we believe that students will retain the information better and be more able to build on what they have learnt.

The groups are made up of like-minded students so that the sessions flow and cater to their specific needs. The content and approach of our workshops and practice exams are based on the types of papers found in the actual exams your child will be sitting.

This book is relevant for students who are sitting an exam when they are in Year 4 or they are in Year 5.

Students who are suitable for our workshops will generally score in the top triangle (top 5% of Victorian students) or in Band 6 (the next 10% of Victorian students) in Reading and Numeracy. These basic skills need to be at a very high standard when considering workshops for competitive exams.

Educational Assessment by HendersonsIf you are uncertain whether your child should sit a scholarship or entrance exam, then an individual Educational Assessment will assist in providing you with clarity. TYPES OF WORKSHOPS OFFERED

Write Creatively- ACER, EDUTEST, AAS, ENTRANCE TO SCOTCH Our emphasis here is on the structure of an essay, the use of expressive language and the way to respond to an illustration or other prompts.

Write to Inform- ACER, sometimes AASOur emphasis here is on the organisation of this type of essay, the use of effective language and the way to express a point of view.

Mathematics- ACER, EDUTEST, AAS, ENTRANCE TO MGS and SCOTCH We focus on Maths problem solving and exam technique. These workshops are not about training in the basic processes of Mathematics. Students entering for Scholarships should already be proficient at Maths.This is why we do pretesting before a Maths class (see page 9).

There are two stages in solving any problem. · Analysis – What is this problem really about?

What data does the question have which may help solve it? · Strategies – The skills that will help to solve the problem.

Reading Comprehension- ACER, EDUTEST, AAS, ENTRANCE TO MGS and SCOTCHA half day course to teach students the skills of inferential reading, as well as how to interpret maps, diagrams, charts and illustrations.

Verbal Reasoning- EDUTEST, AAS, ENTRANCE TO MGS and SCOTCHA half-day course to teach our techniques to see the relationships and solve problems using words and language, including verbal analogies, synonyms, antonyms and logical reasoning.

Numerical Reasoning- EDUTEST, AAS, ENTRANCE TO MGS and SCOTCH A half-day course to teach our techniques to solve problems using numbers. These tests include missing numbers, worded problems and logical reasoning.

Abstract Reasoning- AAS, ENTRANCE TO MGS and SCOTCHA half-day course to teach our techniques on how to address and solve these puzzle type papers.

Practice Exams These are fundamental to our program. Every practice exam comes with complete performanceanalysis (in a group) with detailed explanations for every answer. We provide you with the most authentic testing experience outside of the actual exam as students adhere to strict exam conditions. Results are handed back to students and parents within 15 minutes of the conclusion of the exam with written explanations. Following comprehensive group analysis, individual consultations with correctors are available to further discuss feedback for written essays.

We strongly recommend booking at least one practice exam for students to become familiar with the expectations and time management required. Year 4 and Year 5 students must have undertaken a workshop to sit a practice exam.

MATERIALS: We do not supply or sell our materials under any circumstances. Students who are absent from a session will not receive the material.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

When do I need to pay? What if my child is sick or cannot attend?

You must pay for the first session or any bookings for the current month at the time of booking. We do offer a $20 discount for all bulk payments of each $500. Otherwise, fees are payable on the 1st of the month in which the workshop is scheduled.

We will endeavour to arrange a replacement date for any absences. As Saturdays and Sundays are generally fully booked, you will be placed on a waiting list for the other groups.

Please note that a cancellation charge may be applicable.

Many other companies offer longer programmes. Does Hendersons?

What feedback do the parents get?

Yes. Our English classes are called Snapshots and our Maths is called Intro to Problem Solving. See page 21 for more information on these courses.

Parents are given group feedback by the teacher at the end of the workshop or exam. Parents are required to be in the classroom for the last 15 minutes of each session. Eg. 12.15pm for 12.30pm finish.

Why do you do workshops by groups? Can I just do one workshop?

Because it works. Bright children like to interact with and will learn from others of a similar intellectual level.

Yes, though we do recommend all workshops to be undertaken for your child to be fully prepared.

Why are the Year 4 & 5 workshops only available as half days?

What are the workshop times?

For students of this age we find that, after three hours of concentration, teaching and learning becomes less effective.

My child is an avid reader, does he/she need to do Reading Comprehension?

What are the office hours?

That’s great. It is an imperative component as it will have definitely helped with their vocabulary. Our workshop develops those existing skills and teaches techniques to infer answers from text, maps, diagrams, charts and illustrations.

What is your track record?

We believe that what we offer will greatly aid the successful attainment of a scholarship or placement interview. Remember that the best actor did not always get the role on the first attempt.

We have had a consistent percentage of our students winning scholarship interviews. Over the last several years, we have had about half of our students, each year, achieve their goal of a scholarship or entry to the school of their choice.

HOW TO MAKE A BOOKINGBookings can be made online at www.hendersons.com.au by clicking on the ‘Book Now’ button and following the prompts. Once we have processed your online enrolment form, you will receive an email confirmation, along with an invoice and reference number for payments.

Alternatively, you can fill out the form on the last two pages of this booklet and fax, email or post it to us.

A minimum deposit for the first session, or any bookings for the current month, is required at the time of booking.

Remaining fees are payable on the 1st of the month in which the workshop(s) are scheduled.

Please note all changes or cancellations need to be made in writing. Please send an email to [email protected], quoting your student number, with any changes or cancellations you would like to make.

Single Transaction Bonus$20 will be deducted from your total cost, each time you make a payment of $500 or more in a single transaction.(i.e $20 for $500, $40 for $1 000, $60 for $1 500 etc.)

OTHER HELPFUL SERVICES OFFERED BY HENDERSONSEssay Correction Service

We will set the topics for your child to complete at home. Under your supervision, this will reinforce their current learning. Your child will be provided with addressed envelopes to the corrector, who will then correct the essay and post it back to you along with feedback. We guarantee that the essay will be in the mail within 48 hours of receipt. We have the option of three essays for $90 or six essays for $180. This service is only available to students who have undertaken one of our writing workshops.

Skills & Enrichment Programmes

Hendersons offers Group Workshops with the aim of raising students’ skills in both English and Maths. These are not focused on preparing for exams. Group workshops are conducted on weeknights, weekends and during school holidays with a maximum of eight students. Please refer to the Skills & Enrichment Programmes book for more information, dates and prices.

Individual Tutoring In Maths and English

We do provide additional individual tuition for the workshops at our Hawthorn and Mount Waverley offices.

We only offer our workshops in a group setting, of no more than 8 students, as much of the learning that takes place is reinforced by the interaction between the students in the small group.

Individual tuition is also available for those seeking additional clarity of content covered in workshops. One hour of tuition may be all that is required to turn the light on.

Individual Scholarship and Entrance Exam tuition: · $90 per hour

· All payments must be made prior to first session

· One hour sessions after school are available subject to appointments already made

Tutors are available Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays after school hours. As these tutors also do general tutoring, they are usually fairly heavily booked so appointment times need to be made early.

Interview Preparation

With our years of experience, we have amassed a large number of questions that may be asked in the interview. Please contact our staff for a copy of these questions when you have been called for an interview. We also conduct a one and a half hour mock interview to assist your child. Cost of the interview preparation is $135.

Portfolio Assistance

Some schools ask that potential students prepare a portfolio to present at the time of interview. Our staff will look at your draft and assist with further improvements and recommendations. We do recommend that the first draft be prepared by your child as they will be the one presenting it. The cost depends greatly on the quality of the first draft, though an average time is one to two hours at $90 per hour.

Terms And Conditions

1. We reserve the right to cancel or reschedule any workshop where there are not sufficient bookings.

2. If a student cancels or changes for any reason, a refund will be made depending on when the cancellation or change was received. Cancellation charges will be assessed as follows:

· 3 or more days prior to workshop : Full refund or transfer to another class · 2 or less days prior to workshop : 50% cancellation fee of that day’s workshop, unless a Doctor’s certificate for that day is

provided.

3. It is the responsibility of parents/guardians to ensure that staff can contact them easily during all sessions. Please make sure that we have a phone number for you on the day of any session attended.

4. It is the responsibility of parents to advise Hendersons of any foods a child should not eat or medical problems.

5. As students are not always willing participants, we reserve the right to exclude any whose behaviour disrupts the learning of others. In this case a refund will be negotiated.
