Year 2 – Writing week beginning 29.06.20
Welcome to our writing journey…Reinventing the dark!
This week we are going to be innovating the story ‘The Dark’ by
Lemony Snicket. We will be making the story our own by adapting
the main noun and the adjectives to describe the noun.
Like at school, we need to know what we are writing, who we are
writing it for and why. Below is your writing journey explained.
Purpose: You are writing to entertain.
Audience: You will be writing to Lemony Snicket.
Form: You will be writing a narrative.
Effect: Your writing will need to interest and entertain your readers.
Monday 29th June 2020
LO: To explore vocabulary.
If you would like to read the story, please find the attached
YouTube link. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmL2KFQyyKw
For today’s learning we are going to be exploring the first few pages
of the book. We are going to be exploring the vocabulary that is
used within the text.
What is innovating?
Innovating means to make changes to something that already exists.
What are we innovating?
We will be innovating the story of ‘The Dark’ by making changes to
the main noun and the adjectives that describe it. The main noun in
the story is ‘the dark’.
1st task
For your task today I would like you to highlight words that you
don’t know and find the definition. You could use a dictionary or the
internet to find out the definition. If you can’t research the
definition then write what you think the word means.
If you are finding it tricky, here is something to help…
Word What I think it means
creaky
several
basement
distant
rattles
The first 6 pages of the book
Challenge time: To find synonyms.
For your challenge today I would like you to create synonyms for at
least 5 words from the first 6 pages. Remember synonyms are
different words that share the same definition.
For example: distant remote

LO: To construct deeper understandings.
For today’s learning we will be starting to innovate the story. We will
first be thinking about the noun that we will be focusing on. For
example in the book the main noun is the dark.
1st task
For your first task I would like you to create your own noun to
replace the dark. This could be anything you would like it to be. For
example you could have a dragon, a unicorn, a hamster, the wind.
My noun is __________________________________________.
2nd task
For today’s second task I would like you to draw a picture of your
noun that you have chosen. Miss Matthews’ has chosen lightning as
her new noun.
3rd task
Now you have your photo of your noun, I would like you to write all
the things you know about it around the outside.
See Miss Matthews’ example below.
Natural event
Releases energy
It’s loud
Normally happens over land
not oceans
Bolts of lightning strike
somewhere on earth every second.
Challenge time: To construct sentences.
Using the two pictures from the story, recreate sentences using
your new noun. You can follow the same pattern but just change the
noun and your name if you like.
See Miss Matthews’ example using the first page of the book: Miss
Matthews was afraid of lightning.
Wednesday 1st July 2020
LO: To use adjectives.
For today’s learning we will be using adjectives to describe our new
noun.
What are adjectives?
Adjectives are describing words for nouns.
1st task
For our first task today we are going to be picking suitable
adjectives to fit in the sentences below. I have given you an
adjective mat to help you.
1. The dark lived in the same house as Laszlo, a
______________ place with a _______________________
roof.
2. Sometimes the dark hid in the _______________________
cupboard.
3. But mostly it spent its time in the _____________________
basement.
4. In Laszlo’s living room was the ________________________
widow in the house.
2nd task
For our second task today I would like you to mind-map adjectives
that you could use to describe your noun. See Miss Matthews’
example.
Distinct
Loud
Majestic
White
Vivid
Fierce
Terrifying
Challenge time: To construct sentences.
For your challenge today I would like you to construct sentences
about your noun using your adjectives. To push yourself further you
could even use an expanded noun phrase to describe your noun.
What is an expanded noun phrase?
An expanded noun phrase is the use of two adjectives separated by
a comma to describe a noun. See Miss Matthews’ example.
The distinct, terrifying thunder echoed as it struck the pavement
outside the house.

LO: To innovate sentences.
For today’s learning we will be innovating sentences from the story
‘The Dark’ to make our own narrative. You will need your work on
your noun and adjectives to help you.
Supported task
If you would like an easier task as you are finding it tricky then use
your noun and adjectives to fill in the gaps from the parts of the
story that Miss Matthews has written below.
Original sentence: Laszlo was afraid of the dark.
Your sentence: ___________________ was _________________
of the ______________________________.
Original sentence: Sometimes the dark hid in the cupboard.
Your sentence: Sometimes the ____________________________
hid in the ___________________________________.
Original sentence: But mostly it spent its time in the basement.
Your sentence: But mostly it spent its time in the
_______________________________________________.
Original sentence: At night, of course, the dark went out and spread
itself against the windows and doors of Laszlo’s house.
Your sentence: At night, of course, the _____________________
went out and _______________________ itself against the
________________________________________ of
___________________________ house.
Original sentence: But in the morning the dark would be back in the
creepy basement, where it belonged.
Your sentence: But in the morning the ______________________
would be back in the _____________________
_________________, where it belonged.
Challenge task
If you would like a challenge I would like you to use the first 6 pages
of the story book as a guide for you to follow but I would like you to
create your own narrative following a similar pattern. You must
include at least 3 adjectives.

LO: To create illustrations.
For today’s learning I would like you to get creative! You have
worked so hard innovating the story that I would like you to create
your own illustrations to go along with your innovated story.
Remember give it a title too!
