Writing Always try to have a dictionary and Common Exception word sheet next to you.

Objective: to be able to use prepositions of place in poetry. This week we are focusing on prepositions, especially in relation to our Topic (Local Area). We are focusing on prepositions of location e.g. ‘above, ‘below’, ‘beside’, ‘around’, ‘inside’ ‘on’, ‘over’, ‘in’, ‘under’ etc. Using a dictionary or your computer find out what ‘preposition’ means and make a list of as many prepositions as you can.

Today you are going to start putting prepositions into poetry. Begin by reading the poem ‘My House’ by Moira Andrew (see below). Which prepositions has she used? Are they on your list? Now have a chat with someone in your house about what is above your house, below your house, beside your house, and inside your house. Using the sheet on page 13 write down what you have discussed.

Today look at ‘My House’ poem again. What patterns do you notice on the page? How is the poem set out? What punctuation is used? How are capitals used? Now with your information that you collected yesterday about your house try and write your own ‘My House’ poem using the same kind of patterns that Moira Andrew used.

Today you are going to proof read your poem, making sure you first read it aloud to someone to check that it makes sense. Using a coloured pencil (purple if you have it) make your corrections. Now write it out in neat. You could decorate it too. Make sure your handwriting is neat and easy to read. Ascenders should be tall and straight and descenders should hang below the line unless they are capitals.

Today you are going to link your English with your Geography/History. Firstly have a look at the History in the Wider Curriculum. When you have found your information about Wells Cathedral choose five things that you find interesting and just like you did with Florence Nightingale write a non-chronological report about the cathedral, remembering Headings, sub-headings and paragraphs.

Maths Capacity and volume.

Capacity is the amount a container can hold. Volume is the amount it is actually holding. Look at this PowerPoint on Twinkl. https://www.twinkl.co.uk/resource/t-n-2545098-measuring-in-ml-powerpoint

Complete the questions about volume on page 7.

At home- compare the capacity of different containers (saucepans, bottles, bowls.) Make predictions- which do you think will hold the most? Which do you think will hold the least? Look at the problem of the day 8.

Have a go at completing some of the activity cards on page 9.

Comparing volume and capacity at home- Have a go at drawing your own table similar to the one on page 10. Practise filling containers and estimating their capacity.

Wider Curriculum

Science: Identify and name a variety of everyday materials. Think about the different materials ‘The Three Little Pigs’ used to build their houses.

Use sticks, straw and paper rectangles to collage 3 Little Pigs’ homes (see weblink)

OR

Construct homes from various materials and test their strength as well. You could use constructions sets and wooden bricks. What materials prevent the wolf blowing them down? Are the pigs also safe from wet weather?

Geography-Mapping https://www.google.co.uk/intl/en_uk/earth/ Draw a route from home to shops, school or church. etc. Think about the local buildings and places on your route.

P.E Throwing and Catching. Look at the suggestions below and try and follow the instructions.

Computing- Algorithms Using your map of your route to school/shops you did on Tuesday, use a small world person/Lego and walk it along the route. Use vocabulary such as: forwards, turn left, turn right as appropriate. Give directions to a partner to walk their Small world play figure along route. If you have a computer/laptop try typing these instructions.

History Wells Cathedral Objective: to understand about our local environment. We have a big and important cathedral in our city. Can you find out more about it? Go to the website; wellscathedral.org.uk See what information you can find and makes some notes. Now when you have found some interesting information go back to the Writing slot for today (see above).
