‘because education is not a science, it's an art, it's very hard
when something goes well to know why.’ Gardner 2002
PBL is an instructional method that challenges students to "learn to learn," working cooperatively in groups to seek solutions to real world problems. These problems are used to engage students' curiosity and initiate learning the subject matter. PBL prepares students to think critically and analytically, and to find and use appropriate learning resources. --Barbara Duch (2000)
Application of problem solving in new and future situations
Creative and critical thought Adoption of holistic approach to problems and
situations Appreciation of diverse viewpoints Successful team collaboration Promotion of self-directed learning Effective communication skills Leadership skills Utilisation of relevant and varied resources
1. Read the Problem‘Tom is 8 years old. He is a boy with a charming smile and positively bursting with enthusiasm to help his teacher by doing jobs around the classroom. Unfortunately he wants to do those during most lesson times. Tom has had two fixed term exclusions to date…….’
2. Brainstorm
• What do we know about these issues?• What do we need to know to gain further
knowledge of the issues?• How are we going to find this information?
3. Identify/discuss/Assign
• Essential issues (for everyone to look up)• Specific issues (for individuals to look up)• Overlapping issues
4. Individual Reading
• Research• Preparation
5. Attend Lecture
• The basics• Springboard to new angles of research
6. Plenary
• Review scenario• Report• Discuss the issues, agree course of action• Assess progress• Self Evaluation- How did things go? Did we work
well in a group? Any suggestions for next time?
‘I found it difficult at first but I understand far more now than I would from a lecture.’
‘PBL has made me research much deeper and I now realise that there isn’t always a right answer!’‘It makes you feel
like a real teacher!’‘It’s exciting when you get the scenario as we are in control of what we research and the conclusions we come to.’‘You have to work
a lot harder but working in a team is excellent, the discussions we have are brilliant!’
