• Not all students are aiming for university• Many of you will go on to TAFE ,
Apprenticeships or Employment• Remember the better your grades the more
likely you are to succeed at your chosen pathway
• 80% of people are applying for 20% of courses at TAFE
• This means selection criteria apply
Selection Criteria
Goal Setting• Having goals and being motivated go hand in hand
• Setting yourself some goals for year 11 will help your performance
• Goals should be SMART– Specific– Measurable– Achievable– Realistic– Time bound
Goal Setting Action Plan
• Goal – To my maths grade from a C to a B• Time frame – by the end of semester 2• Strategies for achieving that goal– Listen more carefully in class– Ask for help when I don’t understand– Do 20 minutes practise problems each day– Don’t leave study until the night before the test
Keys to Success in Year 11
• A great attitude• Having goals• Time management• Effective Study techniques• Be willing to work hard• Being a good communicator
Homework Diaries
• Use to write down homework, assignment due dates, test dates and things to remember
• Check them• Use them to make ‘to do lists’ once at home• Proper use will help you set priorities for
homework and study• Make sure you don’t just look at tomorrow
look forward and plan how to cope with busy times
Study Timetables• You should be doing about 12-15 hours per week if you
are working towards an ATAR ( more in the lead up to exams)
• Students not working towards an ATAR should be doing about an hour a day at least 6 days a week
• Draw up a timetable and try and stick to it• Students may need to draw up a new one each week• For ATAR students timetable should include a time each
week which is revision of old work not current work• Be aware of peak times and use them when working out
the timetable• The plan should be realistic and sustainable• The idea is if you work hard in the quiet weeks you will
cope better with the busy weeks
• Spread times over the week don’t leave it all until weekends
• Plan breaks ( they actually help your effectiveness)• Do harder subjects first when you are fresher• Use all the time allocated, Don’t stop once tomorrows
homework is done• Plan to minimise disruptions• Any time not taken up on homework should be spent
